The economics of educational opportunity

The extent to which economic factors can explain private decisions about staying on at school beyond minimum school leaving age and about going on to higher education is considered. The pattern of continuing education by age and by class is described: most terminate their full-time education at the earliest opportunity but a higher proportion of those with middle-class parents stay on. Differences in private rates of return to the student to staying on at school and to university offer an explanation for the lower proportion dropping out of education at the end of school than at minimum school leaving age. Private rates of return do not explain the variation in the pattern of continuing education between social classes. Costs to parents of continuing their child's education are considered for model families at different income levels. These costs, relative to income level, offer a possible explanation for differences in continuing education between socio-economic groups, and may be an important barrier to equal educational opportunity.

The eventful genesis of educational media

This paper is a reflection on the history and future of educational media. Over the last century various new media technologies were introduced in education. Most of these failed to meet the high expectations. The paper reviews the rise and fall of various “revolutionary” learning media and analyses what went wrong. Three main driving factors are identified that influence the educational system: 1) educational practice, 2) educational research, and 3) educational technologies. The role and position of these factors is elaborated and critically reviewed. The paper concludes with identifying a number of relevant developments that substantiate a favourable future outlook of media for learning.

Conclusions Drawn from the ICEM Conference

It is very difficult to sum up a conference of this kind. Even if the focus was centred upon ‘audiovisual media’ and ‘language teaching’, a great many considerations have to be taken into account. We have a large number of different media and their possible combinations. Language teaching comprises both foreign language teaching for nationals and the teaching of a mother tongue to immigrants. Through its members ICEM represents many different countries, and we were interested in receiving various points of view from the respective cultures.     

Examining the use of theory within educational technology and media research

Academic research in the areas of educational technology and media is often portrayed to be limited in terms of its use of theory. This short paper reports on data collected from a survey of 462 ‘research active’ academic researchers working in the broad area of educational technology and educational media. The paper explores their use (and non-use) of theory.
