The Use and Effectiveness of Palmtop Computers in Education

This paper reports how palmtop computers were used in an English secondary school over the course of a year. In particular, it concentrates on the perceived effectiveness of such computers in an educational setting, and on how teachers' and students' knowledge and use of "content-free" applications increased over that time. The benefits and potential problems with this new technology are discussed along with the consequences it has for classroom and school organisation.     

Computers and Education: the software production problem

Following an analysis of the stages in software production this paper argues that team production remains the only satisfactory method of providing high quality software but that the key to a higher quantity of reasonable quality computer-assisted learning production lies in the development of support technology adequate to permit individual teachers to develop software within their existing curriculum framework. Three promising approaches—software toolboxes, CAL program shells and software CAL analysts—are described.

Computers in Mathematics Education: A revolution in the making?

How do student teachers see computers being used in secondary mathematics lessons, and how do they themselves use them on teaching practice? These questions were prompted by the need to provide appropriate experiences for students on the Postgraduate Certificate of Education course. Information collected over a two year period suggests that although computer use was not widespread, more students used computers, and applications software in particular, than practising teachers. Strategies for course provision are outlined and the examination of assumptions and beliefs is indicated as an important dimension in future work.     

Research Report RECSAM: Computers in Education Project,Singapore Study

From 1986 to 1988, Regional Centre for Education in Science and Mathematics (RECSAM) at Penang organised the Computers in Education Project with financial support from the Australian Government. The aim of the Project was to provide information on the use of computers in education among SEAMEO countries. Such information, it was thought, could be useful for educators who needed to formulate sound policies regarding the introduction, management, and use of computers in schools and the roles of computers in education in general. Six countries took part in this project including a team from Singapore.

党中央印发《公民道德建设实施纲要》后,在全国尤其是教育界引起了强烈反响。人们在回顾和总结改革开放以来我国高等教育取得的丰硕成果的同时,也在认真反思近年来高校道德教育的现状和存在的问题。本文试图在总结以往经验教训、继续发挥传统载体有效作用的基础上,通过一些非常规、非教条化的渠道和途径,充分发挥课堂以外各种非传统载体的作用,从而构建立体的、网络化的高校道德教育工作新体系。     

The Successive Contributions of Computers to Education: A Survey

For several decades, computers have been used in educational settings. Our purpose here is to show how education has successively benefited from traditional information processing, through programmed instruction and computer-assisted instruction (CAI), then from artificial intelligence, through intelligent CAI and then intelligent tutoring systems, then from multimedia and hypermedia techniques, through intelligent learning environments, and finally how it can now benefit from the technologies of information and communication, in particular through the Internet. We finally give an outlook of the current trends of research.
