The accreditation of prior experiential learning (APEL) in Great Britain — Some implementation issues in vocational education

Abstract

After defining prior experiential learning, the experience of the Assessment of Prior Learning in the United States used to review and analyse developing practices in Great Britain.

The major issues reviewed are the nature of evidence, the collection of evidence into portfolios, assessment and costing such provision. Assessment of prior experiential learning is welcomed, even with the challenges it provides for vocational training and colleges.

Research on a Rigid Rotor—Sliding Bearing System with a Squeeze Film Damper

In this paper,a dynamic model on a rigid rotor-sliding bearing system with a SFD is established.The stability and bifurcation behaviors of the system are studied,on The basis of the differential equations of fluid momentum and mass continuity,the distribution pressure function is derived by taking oil film inertia force into consideration.Damping force, clearance excitation force,interference force of different frequencies and static load are also considered in the model,Finally,the governing equations of the stability and bifurcation behaviors of the system are solved by Floquet theory,Simulation of dynamic model shows that the rigid rotor-sliding bearing system can maintain stability and exhibit a Hopt bifurcation phenomenon in a certain range.

The Research Community ‘Philosophy and History of the Discipline of Education’ was established in 1999. First an overview is given of the two main areas into which the more than 180 chapters published in 12 books can be grouped. In general the papers are addressing ‘internal’ educational research topics and more ‘external’ relations. The suite of papers in this issue continues the selection of material presented during the 2017 and 2018 meetings and follow on from the suite published in an issue of this journal earlier this year (54:3). Next, the suite of papers appearing in this issue is introduced. In this, and the preceding suite, aspects of the production and acceleration, as well as of the (re)presentation, dissemination and reception of educational research are brought into focus.

This article summarized the research progress and characteristics of Chinese social security issues from 2000 papers,which record in CNKI.We find that,the topic in the field of social security is board and dispersion.Due to the huge system and complex problem of social security,there is no central theme.Through cluster analysis,multi dimensional scaling analysis and social network analysis,we got the high frequency keywords atlas.Then,we summarized the research topic to six parts.They are rural social security,urban and rural social security coordination,vulnerable group social security,social security fund management,the social insurance system,and social security system and government responsibility.It summed up the theme of the module,meanwhile,combined the practice analysis.

Entanglement and transnational transfer in the history of infant schools in Great Britain and salles d’asile in France, 1816–1881

The historical developments of infant schools in Great Britain and salles d’asile in France – both precursors of present-day preschools – were interconnected. However, historians have not yet analysed specifically how transnational exchange influenced the growth and nature of these institutions. Drawing on archival data and secondary sources, and using a combined comparative and transnational approach, this study aims to remedy this omission. It traces the evolution of British infant schools and French salles d’asile from their beginnings to their affiliation with the education systems in their respective countries – i.e. from 1816, when Robert Owen founded the first infant school in Britain, to 1881, when the salle d’asile was incorporated as an integral part of the French education system (renamed école maternelle). The study also shows how ideas about infant education and the motives and experiences of educators and social reformers spread across British borders and influenced the development of salles d’asile.

The power of networks in the marketing of pedagogical ideals: the Dalton Plan in Great Britain (1920–1925)

ABSTRACT

The Dalton Plan is well known in educational historiography. But there are also unanswered questions such as: how is it possible that a pedagogical experiment begun in the United States in February 1920 had, by the month of March, already come to be known first hand by a visiting English educator? The objective in this article is to find an explanation for the rapid expansion and huge popularity of the Dalton Plan in Great Britain in the early 1920s. This is attempted theoretically by using the concepts ‘educational network’ and ‘pedagogical product’, and empirically by using unexplored documents and correspondence concerning Helen Parkhurst’s trips to Great Britain. It ends with the conclusion that, in Great Britain, as early as 1922, the Dalton Plan became a commercial product that was exploited in similar ways to the work of Maria Montessori.     

Assessment to Increase Students’ Creativity: Two Case Studies

Changing the assessment method is a way to influence the students’ attitudes towards their studies; their ways of working to a large extent are determined by the assessment methods. One way to take advantage of this is to use the assessment to stimulate creativity and communication skills. This has been tried in full‐scale studies for students in engineering physics, computer science and mathematics at Uppsala University and Vdxjö University, both in Sweden. Undergraduate education in engineering, computer science and mathematics has by tradition emphasized training in skills. The examination often consists of problems that the students solve individually. It is difficult to give complex and/or loosely defined problems in such an examination. The students are not encouraged to analyze, judge, communicate or discuss these skills. In fact, in the authors’ experience, traditional examinations can actually inhibit the development of the students’ independence and creativity. Both projects have been supported by the Council for Renewal of Undergraduate Education, Sweden.
