Everyday Phenomena and Teachers’ Training

The Swedish curriculum for the nine-year compulsory school prescribes that the teacher shall work in an investigative way with everyday phenomena. This can be interpreted as working with simple experiments using common materials, and presupposes that teachers themselves have a good and reflected comprehension of the phenomena illustrated. In order to study the ability of our teacher students to explain everyday phenomena, we chose to ask all the students in the fourth term about phenomena where transformations of matter are involved. The students were requested to give their answers in writing and as detailed as possible. The answers have been analysed in different ways. We have categorised them and studied whether there are any systematic patterns between individuah. A very general conclusion is that there is a great need in teacher training to work with conceptual understanding and with ways of expressing oneself as a teacher.     

The Stratification of Youth Training∗

Abstract

This article is based on surveys in 1988 among representative samples totalling 4,247 16‐19 year olds from four areas (Kirkcaldy, Liverpool, Sheffield and Swindon), of whom 1,562 had some experience of Youth Training (YT). The young people's likelihood of entering YT depended primarily on their educational qualifications and where they lived. Trainees’ chances of being kept on by the firms where they were trained depended mainly on their types of schemes and their performances during training, indicated by whether or not they earned any additional qualifications. The chances of those not retained moving immediately to jobs with other firms were more dependent on their school‐leaving qualifications and where they lived. The authors interpret their evidence to argue that employers’ uses of YT in the late‐1980s were creating increasingly clear divisions between sponsorship, contest and warehousing sectors.

After a long period of communist misrule and economic mismanagement, the countries of Central and Eastern Europe and their people are facing the challenge of political, social, economic and cultural renewal. Adult education can and needs to play an important role in this crucial process. Currently, adult education and adult educators are in a difficult situation but there are also signs of hope and vitality. I provide an overview of the societal and individual adult education needs, the current situation in various parts of the field, and future prospects. I also deal with the need for sensitive assistance from abroad to help our colleagues there accomplish their difficult task.

Education and Training: still distinguishable?

Abstract

Recently it has been proposed that the distinction between education and training is becoming obsolete. This paper disputes that conclusion, arguing that it is arrived at by failing to distinguish the Increasing sophistication of modern training, and the cognitive and social skills that tend to accompany this, from a broader, ‘liberal’ concept of education. This concept may find itself in an inconvenient tension with some of the requirements of the economy, the view previously stated, therefore, with its emphasis on consensus and identity of interest, is seen as being problematic in a context where the ‘goods’ of the citizen and of the worker may be radically divorced from one another. Alternative definitions of education and training are thus Identified and shown to generate correspondingly different analyses of the current situation, as well as alternative curricular proposals.
