Round Table Conference on Testing and Evaluating Audio-Visual Equipment

Mr. Jongbloed chaired the session. Dr Harrison's remarks began with a reference to the meeting which took place on February 8th and 9th, 1968 in Paris. The purpose of the round table discussion was to examine the report of the Working Party and to see whether the working of the Organisation could be improved upon. The purpose of the meeting in Paris was to explore ways of evaluating and testing equipment and to reach agreement on equipment policy and standards. An attempt would also be made to divide up the work between member countries.

Audio-Visual Training in the Netherlands

In 1972 the Netherlands Institute for Audio-Visual Media (NIAM) in the Hague established a new department in Rotterdam to provide information and advice on the selection of audiovisual equipment and training in the use and applications of the different media. The information service was to be provided free of charge, but a fee would be charge for the training courses.     

Computerised Cataloguing and Management of Audio-Visual Software

The need to establish a data bank of available audiovisual software in our 38 regional pedagogic centers (v. EMI 1981/3, p 25 ff) arose because of difficulties experienced when we needed current and up-to-date information on such material, for curriculum planning, periodical stocktaking, or the publishing of regional and national level catalogues. The Ministry put at our disposal its central mainframe computer and its staff. They helped us to clarify the aims and general framework of the project, and prepared the computer programme, the necessary input forms, the coding system, the tentative framework for subjectmatter classification, and its notation. One of the most important aspects of this project is the standardisation of nomenclature, classification and cataloguing rules both for the national and the regional centres, which will facilitate communication between managers and users of the service.     

The Production of Audio-Visual Media in School

In 1970, the International Council for Educational Media (ICEM) set up a working party under the brief: ‘The production of audio-visual media in schools’. The author of the present article is the leader of this working party. Since its establishment, it has now completed two part projects, two other projects are ‘in hand’ and a fifth is about to be started.

Uses of bryophytes

Although bryophytes are among the oldest land plants, their usefulness is relatively unknown to most people. Bryophytes are used in pharmaceutical products, in horticulture, for household purposes, and are also ecologically important. The multifarious uses and applications of the bryophyte flora are being increasingly recognized around the world. Their potential in the biomapping of atmospheric precipitation is also enormous. In this article, we briefly examine some of the uses of this ancient group of simple plants.

The many achievements of the Educational Foundation for Visual Aids and the National Committee for Audio-Visual Aids to Education, under the leadership of the late Dr J A Harrison from their inception until his death last year, might lead many ‘Educational Media’ leaders to think that the audio-visual movement in Education was essentially a postwar development. That this is not so is evidenced by the fact that more classroom teaching films were being made in Britain n i each of the years 1934—39 than are being made today! There were annual conferences organised by the British Film Institute and the Educational Handwork Association; there were frequent articles on the subject and reviews of new films in Sight & Sound, World Film News, The Schoolmaster, The Times Educational Supplement, British Journal of Photography, even one on Schools' television etc, and several books had been published: ‘The Cinema in Education’ in 1925, ‘Report on Educational and Documentary Films’ by the British Association for the Advancement of Science, 1930; ‘The Film in National Life’ 1932; ‘The Film in the Classroom’ 1932; ‘The Cinema in School’ 1933; ‘The Film in the School’ 1935; etc.
