Counseling faculty serve as gatekeepers to protect the public from trainees who demonstrate significant deficiencies in professional functioning. Two issues that have not been thoroughly examined are how different cultural values may intersect with the assessment of appropriate professional competencies and whether the multicultural environment of programs is considered when assessing potentially problematic students. The authors suggest a group systems intervention and provide implications and recommendations for counselor educators.  相似文献

Because of belated attention to gerontology, most counselors concerned with older persons seem to require initial professional development rather than renewal. Development calls for enhancement of both knowledge and attitudes; interrelated areas delineated in this article. Knowledge needed includes stages and tasks encountered over the life span, recognition of individual variations on life-span themes, and specific information on such significant phases as career change, retirement, and death and dying. Attitudes, composed of cognitive and affective elements, may require intensive efforts to supplant stereotypes with unbiased views and appreciative feelings. Consideration is given to the relative merits of coursework, fieldwork, and other experiences in effecting attitudinal change. Programs and courses presently available are indicated and future prospects proposed, toward improvement of professional development in counseling older persons.  相似文献

Abstract

Three hundred forty-three students at a small urban northeastern college rated their needs for counseling assistance on fifty-three personal, learning and career issues. Strongest areas of concern included financial stresses, academic perfonriance, career development, relationship skills, bereavement and the fear of getting AIDS. Gender and racial groups are compared and implications for counseling center service delivery are discussed.  相似文献

The authors propose the Interactive Training Model (ITM), a full classroom role play experience, as a method for helping student counselors develop essential interviewing and counseling skills and self‐awareness as required by the 2009 Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs Standards. This pre‐post, quasiexperimental study involving 45 master's‐level students indicated that those who participated in the ITM made greater gains in supervisee development compared with those who participated in a traditional peer feedback model. Narrative student feedback regarding the use of ITM in an essential skills course is presented, and implications for counselor education are discussed.  相似文献

This grounded theory study investigated experiences of 12 counseling students who reported problematic peers. Professional identity development (PID), which involves transformational learning, is crucial for counselors and trainees. However most current training approaches focus more on specific tasks related to PID without focusing on the transformational learning aspect. Mindfulness is an important component for transformational learning; however, limited effort has been focused on its likely impact on PID. This conceptual article describes the need for integrating mindfulness into PID, and explains applications of mindfulness practices in assisting counselors to enhance development of a professional identity in the course of completing transformational tasks through a transformative learning process. Although it is commonly believed that college counseling positively affects student retention and further, that there are convincing data and evidence to support such a belief, an extensive literature search found no objective evidence at all on the relationship of a counseling center's conventional one-to-one counseling and therapy activities with short-term student retention. Two program evaluations which attempt to relate one-to-one individual counseling and psychotherapy to student retention rates at an urban regional state university are discussed. Changes in attendance rates, such as dropping out or retuning between quarters are the criteria used to evaluate program effects for both studies. The first study searched for discernible statistically significant effects. Three-quarters of comparisons of upperclassmen found conceivable retention advantages of students receiving counseling center services over a base-rate group. Yet the freshmen results suggest that counseling may be associates with student attrition, not retention. The second study investigated the relationship between retention and possibly relevant presenting problems and demographic variables of students undergoing individual counseling. No attendance differences among counseled students were found due to age, gender, or presenting problem. Following a discussion of the results, suggentions for future research are presented. A longitudinal, quasi-experimental controlled study of the impact counseling on student retention is clearly needed.  相似文献

Abstract

Although the literature reports a high prevalence of psychological distress among the university student population, still very few intervention schemes have been proposed to manage the problem. The authors describe the main sources of inspiration for the psychiatric counseling service established at Padua University (Italy) and how it operates. Emphasis is laid on counseling quality, operator professionalism, research activities, ethical aspects and resource allocation. The implications for adequate counseling are discussed. Preliminary data suggest that university-based psychiatric counseling centres provide a useful service.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate attitudes of intercollegiate student athletes regarding their use of counseling services. The authors assessed student athletes’ perceived barriers to seeking counseling services and their preferred characteristics of a helping professional. Several barriers to counseling were identified. Results suggest student athletes have strong preferences for counselor characteristics, including familiarity with sports, gender, and age. Practical applications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

目的:编制针对高师学生的自我专业发展意识量表.方法:在四所大学选取652名从大一到大四的高师生进行测量.对所编制的量表进行项目分析和信效度检验.结果:量表的内部一致性信度α系数为0.94,分半信度系数是0.91,因素分析显示量表的结构效度较好.结论:量表的信度和效度指标基本符合心理测量学的标准.  相似文献
