Being Aware of Sino-west Cultural Differences in the Teaching of English

This is an attempt to analyse the cultural differences between China and those countries whose people speak English as their mother tongue.The analysis is made here to caution that enough emphasis should be placed on this very difference in the teaching of the English language.     

On the Cultural Comparison between Chinese and English——The Analogy of Animal Words

Languages convey cultural information while they are used as tools to communicate.With the development of human society and the frequencies of intercultural communication,cultural differences may impact on people’s normal communications.Cultural differences between English and Chinese appear in many aspects of languages.Animal words are influenced by such cultural factors as geographical conditions,historical developments,traditional customs,mythology and fables,etc.So they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.A similar animal word may have different connotative meanings in English and Chinese respectively,but sometimes different animal words have the same connotations.Whether they are different or not will reflect cultural differences between Chinese and English.Thus,through illustration,classification and comparison of English and Chinese animal words,the thesis aims to explore the cultural differences between English and Chinese.What’s more,the thesis aims to help English learns have a better understanding of English culture and develop the abilities of English language study.     

Cultural Differences in Communication between English and Chinese

①The world today is characterized by a growing number of contacts which results in communication between people with different cultural background .This communication takes place because of contacts within the areas of business, military cooperation, science, education, massmedia, entertainment, tourism and etc. ②In all these contacts, communication needs to be as constructive as possible, without misunderstandings and breakdowns. It is our belief that research on＇the nature of cultural differences here can play a positive and constrcitve role.③I wanted to convey a deeper message： ＂No culture is inferior to another and human civilization is the combination of all cultures,Thus,communication, mutual understanding and tolerance are conducive to the development of peace and harmony.＂

With the fast development of Chinese economy and society,the communication between China and foreign countries has been more and more frequent.And China is a country where English is taught as a foreign language.Therefore cultural differences have become more and more significant in English teaching.Both language teachers and students should be aware of the differences between eastern and western culture in their teaching and study.

Intrinsic and Indispensable Relationships between Language Learning and Culture Learning-Based on Case Studies of Cross-cultural Communication

Language and culture are closely related with each other: language is the carrier and a fundamental part of culture, while culture has an intrinsic and indispensable impact on language and is also reflected in language. An Analysis on the Cultural Factors that Affect People’s Perceptions:A Case Study

The intention of this present paper is to explore the relationship between culture and perception and the cultural factors that affect people’s perceptions from different cultural backgrounds. This study is based on a case, which is a news report about the cultural conflict between an old Chinese father and her daughter who has been living in Canada for eight years. Detailed information has been acquired by the author using relative books, journals as well as her own understanding and interpretation. It is concluded that to be aware of the cultural factors is of great importance to understand why people from different cultures have quite different perceptions toward the same thing, which can help to reduce the conflicts and misunderstandings in intercultural communication.

Creation of Beauty in Translation-A Contrastive Study of Aesthetic Values Between China and West and Their Effects on Translation

Literary writing is inseparable from aesthetic values and it is the same as with literary traslation.However,due to different social and cultural traditions,people from different culture have different presuppositions and expectations of beauty,which cause difficulty in conveying this beauty in literary translation.This paper tries to analyze the respective effects of the Chinese and western aesthetic values on the translation between the Chinese language and the English one.By analyzing the differences in the aspects of philosophical influence,moral standards and the form between the Chinese culture and the English one,this paper concludes that it is the task of the translators to make some adjustment in order to cater to the aesthetic values of the target language and convey the beauty of the original work to readers at the same time.
