A Probe into Humorous Effects of TV Programs from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle——A Case Study on If You Are the One

This paper probes into the dialogues in If You Are the One based on the theoretical framework of Grice’s Cooperative Principle, with a view to discovering humorous effects and conversational implicature in a certain context. Through the analysis of representative dialogues which obey and violate the maxims respectively, this paper concludes that speakers, by appropriately violating the maxims and unconsciously observing the maxims of the CP, manage to achieve humorous effects and conversational implicature. Meanwhile, this paper aims to help people express themselves appropriately to avoid pragmatic failures and achieve the goal of communication.     

Adapting Grice’s maxims in the teaching of writing

Grice’s maxims,which define the conditions for efficient spoken communication,can be adapted to the teaching of writing by providing both teachers and writers with a way of understanding successful and unsuccessful written correspondence in mono-and cross-cultural settings.A survey of lay readers’ responses to a sample letter which show that,while there are individual differences in the way these maxims are interpreted,readers expect clarity,brevity,and sincerity,and writing which fails to meet these expectations will be unfavorably received.Also discussed are the issues of contrastive rhetoric,and ways of helping writers to position themselves in relation to their real or imagined reader.     

A Study on the Implicatures in Chinese Advertising from the Perspective of Flouting the Maxims of Cooperative Principle

Advertising language is very critical in advertising and also contributes much to producing advertising effect. As one of the most important pragmatic principles, the Cooperative Principle (CP) is adopted much in linguistic researches. Also, by analyzing a large number of Chinese advertisements with CP, the author finds that it is common that advertisers try to generate implicatures by flouting the maxims of CP. This paper brings a clear look of the Cooperative Principle and its maxims. It also sheds new light on the interpretation of Chinese advertisements.     

An Analysis on Irony from the Perspective of Conversational Implicature

Irony is a frequently occuring indirect act in daily interpersonal interaction.A number of novel ironic cases via deliberately flouting the four maxims of the Cooperative Principle are explained from the perspective of conversational implicature.This paper tend to explore the production of irony according to Grice’s Cooperative Principle and conversational implicature theory with some daily examples and the author hope that this paper is of certain help to further research concerning irony in the realm of pragmatics.     

Research proposal Interviewees’ non-observance of Gricean maxims in BBC political interviews

For the interviewees’ unique identity interviews with political figures in the Western society are always interesting programmes for the general public. Political interviews also attract much pragmatics study. In this article a study is proposed to look into political interviews from a BBC program in the perspective of Gricean maxims. For the sample data interviewees’ non-observance of Quantity, Relevance, Manner,and Quality is calculated and analyzed.The data analysis indicates in the political interviews the maxims of Quantity and Relevance are much more violated.     

Discussion on the Style and Features of Business English Writing

After China＇s entry into the WTO, business English is getting more and more important and useful. Therefore, it is quite necessary to master some of its characteristics about the form and the use of words. In this thesis, the author analyzes and discusses the features of the Business English writing by enumerating a lot of examples relating to the structure, style and linguistic characteristics, hoping to give some help to those who hope to work with Business English in their job, either in teaching or in the international trade.     

On the Use of Chinese in Teaching English

Educators always have two differing arguments over the functions of native language in the foreign language teaching. Many educational practitioners oppose the idea of using native language in second language teaching process due to the grammar translation approach still popular. The grammar translation approach underscore that native language and functional grammar should not be applied to the foreign language teaching. By utilizing different types of second language teaching theories, the author put great emphasis on the function of the native language in the second language teaching particularly on the function to the basic and intermediate level learners. The author contend that: we should exert the necessary function of the native language in foreign language teaching especially for the adult people. Native language should act as a catalyst in this process. Foreign language teachers should not refuse using native language. They should make the best use of native language in the TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) process and thus help student to form English thoughts. Nowadays, facing so many foreign language teaching methods and theories, we should seek the essence and get rid of the dross. As the famous English saying goes: keep the baby and throw out the bath. This article aims at arousing deeper and wider discussion among foreign language practitioners on this problem by making some positive and valuable functions of native language in second language teaching.

Fuzziness is universal in all human language in the world.It provides the literature works with inexhaustible beauty and charm.Chinese classical poetry is characterized by its suggestive,subtlety and implicitness.Therefore the author tries to study the fuzziness of Ma Zhiyuan’s Qiu Si and its translation from the perspective of fuzzy linguistics.     

A Study on the Effects of Online Interaction for the EFL Learners’ Writing Motivation

With the rapid development of information technology, how to utilize the Web in the field of language teaching has become a heated issue in the foreign language teaching reform around the whole world. For so many years, during the teachercentered English writing teaching process, students have no choice but to accept model essays and recite the well-performed sentences and structures. it is hard for teachers and students to conduct an effective interaction, which leads to students’ lacking of writing motivations. The author conducted the experiment with QQ group as a medium, and analyzed the results of the experiment among 66 students from Wuhan University, in order to study how to make good use of the network environment to promote the communication and interaction between students, and then enhance their writing motivation. The experimental data and discussions show that online interaction can motivate students to complete writing tasks, especially enhance their instrumental achievement and intrinsic motivation.

In this paper the author attempts to investigate the contributions Confucius had made in promoting the popularization of education at that time. The ultimate goal of this paper is to demonstrate the realistic significance of Confucius＇s educational concept, namely, ＂education should be done without the difference between the rich and the poor, or the noble and the mean＂.     

A Pragmatic Journey in Finding Nemo

This paper analyzes the actor’s lines to reveal the characterization of the hero Marlin in the animation Finding Nemo from a pragmatic perspective by applying conversational implicature and cooperative principle,especially the violations of maxims of cooperative principle.From the analysis we can see how individualized language is created by the violation of maxims and how individualized language vividly creates characters.This paper gives a totally new perspective to appreciate this stunning animation.     

A Study on the Translator’s Subjectivity of Wolf Totem

The translator, as the main body of a translation, has been in an invisible and ignored state for a long time. The position of the translator has been improved and the role of the translator has begun to be recognized since the field of translation studies multifaceted and deepened. In order to analyze the translator’s subjectivity better, the thesis states comprehensive definitions of the translator’s subjectivity and uses Wolf Totem as a case study, whose author is Jiang Rong and the translator is Howard Goldblatt, to show that how the translator Howard Goldblatt utilizes his subjectivity in the translation process.     

Conversational Principles under Cultural Factors

There are soma conversational principles necessary for a successful conversation. One is the Cooperative Principle of four maxims. Violating any one of the four maxims will give rise to conversational implicatures; the other is the Politeness Principle, proposed to rescue the Cooperative Principle. To draw pragmatic implications from the violation of the Cooperative Principle is of no difference between the west and the east. What are different lies in people＇s choice of the maxims of the Cooperative Principle and this is due to different cultural background. Chinese-styled politeness is characterized by four aspects： respectfulness, modesty, attitudinal warmth and refinement. Language, as a special form of communication, may be viewed as a system, as a vehicle for cultural transmission. It does not exist apart from culture. Thus, language and cultural ore Interactive and understanding of one requires understanding of the other. To better achieve the communicative goal, it is necessary to choose the appreciate way of expression under certain circumstances and cultural factors plays an important role in using language effectively.     

The Application of Cooperative Principle in Translation

The cooperative principle in conversation proposed by Herberr Paul Grice is an important theory in pragmatics,which contrib utes a lot to translation.It introduces pragmatics to translation field and injects fresh vigor to translation practice.Translation is also a kind of conversation some time,thus it should also obey the Cooperative Principle and its maxims.Sometimes,translators have to violate some maxims in order to obey the cooperative principle better in some extent.This article will show some examples in which cooperative princi ples can be used as a guide or a scale to improve the quality of translation.     

A Comparative Study of two Chinese Versions of Wuthering Heights——Comparison between YangYi's Version and LuYang's Version under Contrastive Analysis View

only lies in its deep theme and striking arrangement of events,but also in her accurate and vivid language.In order to study the differences between English and Chinese,This thesis is focused on two Chinese versions of Whuthering Heights in the light of contrastive linguistics.The detailed version comparison consists of two parts: the comparison between two Chinese versions in lexicology and syntax.After comparing two versions,the author noted that both Yang and Lu still commit some mistakes because of ignorance of linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese and in view of this mistakes,the paper offers some revised translation texts for reference only.The author hopes that the comparison results may be beneficial to cross-culture communication and English learning.     

Piggy in Lord of the Flies: A“Great Martyr”

Lord of the Flies is generally considered to be the masterpiece of William Golding,one of the most famous writers in the 20thcentury.There are four major characters in Lord of the Flies,Ralph,Jack,Piggy and Simon.Piggy is a character that Golding elaborately designs.However,scholars and critics pay less attention to him.As a matter of fact,Piggy plays an indispensable role in this novel.This thesis analyzes Piggy in Lord of the Flies,which aims at exploring the real reason of his being looked down upon and laughed at as well as his tragedy and deepening readers’understanding of Piggy in this novel.Through the analysis of Piggy,the author of this thesis finds that Piggy is incarnation of science and reason and prey of evil and barbarism.Piggy is a"great martyr",who dies for his scientific and rational beliefs.     

On the Relationship between the Original and the Translated Version——The Interpretation of Benjamin's Three Metaphors

This paper explores the relationship between the original and its translation by interpreting Benjamin’s three metaphors from his The Translator’s Task. The exploration starts with the metaphor of“the tangent of a circle”,where it is interpreted that although the translated version should be faithful to its original in terms of meaning,yet it is a deviation due to different internal and external factors. Then,in the metaphor of“afterlife”,the discussion demonstrates that the translated version proceeds from the original,but the original depends on it for its survival and afterlife in different eras. Later,based on the metaphor of“fragments of a vessel”,the author states that the original and its translation are equal and complementary,just like the fragments of a vessel,responsible for the development and renewal of each other through translation. Finally,it is concluded that a better understanding of their relationship can offer us a new perspective in translation studies and practice.     

A Critical Analysis on China’s Cultural Regime Reform under the Context of Cross-cultural Communication

Against the backdrop of globalization in the modern time,cultural boundaries have been blurred by the trends of economic integration,global population movement and the development of information technology,which facilitated intercultural exchanges in a more extensive and profound way.Under the new cultural background,our country has called for cultural institutional reform by striving to strengthen the soft power to grow into a culturally strong country.The author holds that it is hard to realize the goals of conducting cultural institutional reform under the current political and economic systems and has proposed some points in this thesis.     

An Analysis of Chinglish in Press Conference Interpretation——Case Study on the Interpretation of the 2nd guangdong International Consultative Conference(GICC)

This thesis aims at analyzing the Chinglish in press conference interpretation with context adaptation of Belgian linguist Jef Verschueren’s Adaptation Theory as the theoretical framework.In Adaptation Theory,context includes all kinds of factors that concern the environment in which the communication takes place,with non-linguistic factors like the physical world,the social world and the mental world playing an important role.Taking the press conference interpretation of the 2nd Guangdong International Consultative Conference as an example,the author attempts to prove the presumption that Adaptation Theory can be applied to spot and reduce the Chinglish in interpreting.It is concluded that the theory of adaptation to the mental world and social world can be applied to reduce the Chinglish of two particular kinds to the minimum level and achieve successful communication.
