Mobilization of duplicates in a Regional Medical Library Program.

An overabundance of duplicate journals without an efficient and economical method of distribution caused one library's staff to reassess traditional methods of dispersal. A simplified form for listing duplicates was devised. In conjunction with the Regional Medical Library Program and the extension program, lists of duplicates were distributed to hospital and clinical libraries. These libraries selected materials to strengthen their ability to fill information needs at the local level and to conserve RMLP support for esoteric and expensive materials. In a two-year period, 86,000 individual pieces were distributed. Some lessening of interlibrary loan requests from heavy users was documented. In an evaluation survey users expressed satisfaction with the program. The successful use of the duplicate program will lead to a further experiment--the library will attempt to fill interlibrary loan requests for common journals with hard copy rather than photocopy in a cost and time reduction effort.     

Evaluation of the TALON Cooperative Acquisitions Program for monographs

The TALON Cooperative Acquisitions Program for monographs (TALON/CAP) was implemented in 1979 by eleven resource libraries in the South Central Regional Medical Library Program. Each participating library acquired books from selected publishers within a profile covering subject and format. The program was evaluated by comparing interlibrary loan requests, surveying participants, and analyzing cataloging records. The results were that ten of the eleven libraries significantly increased their coverage of assigned publishers, and that academic medical libraries are not all buying the same books, even from major medical publishers. The fifty-six publishers in the program accounted for 60% to 83% of the titles with 1977-80 imprints held by participating libraries. The computer-generated collection analysis reports provide a baseline for future collection management studies.     

EBook Interlibrary Loan in American Public Libraries

In recent years, eBook collections have been increasing at a slow but steady rate in both public and academic libraries. With the increasing eBook collections in libraries and the advancements made in information discovering services, users can now discover materials existing outside of their local library more easily. EBooks also offer the potential for quick interlibrary loan delivery. Ironically, eBook interlibrary loan has not become prevalent in libraries. Many studies have been done to explore eBook licensing and interlibrary loan in academic libraries and to offer practical solutions for eBook interlibrary lending. Few studies have been done in public libraries. This study explores the current practice of eBook interlibrary loan activities in American public libraries. Survey questionnaires were distributed to 118 randomly selected public libraries. Questions focused on current eBook interlibrary loan best practices, issues, and obstacles in American public libraries. Findings from this study indicate eBook ILL is not a priority for the surveyed public libraries, and the adoption rate of eBook ILL in public libraries is much lower than that in academic libraries.

通过网络调查的方法对我国跨系统图书馆联盟建设的现状进行分析发现,高校图书馆跨系统合作意识不强、跨系统图书馆联盟分布地域较窄、城市基层公共图书馆尚未加人联盟、共享合作停留在表面、馆际互借联盟服务程序繁琐、区域发展不平衡、缺乏深层次服务。针对存在的这些问题,可以采取以下措施：充分发挥高校馆的资源优势和服务特色、扩展跨系统图书馆联盟网、建立联盟馆际互借服务系统、提高对跨系统图书馆联盟的重视、扩展联盟的服务项目。     

Outreach: the western New York Hospital Library Services Program, 1985-1989

The Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP) in western New York, during the period covered by its first five-year plan, 1984-1989, is recounted and described. This ongoing program is funded annually by a New York State grant and hospital participation fees. It is designed to support access to biomedical information for health care professionals through a grant program for hospitals with staffed libraries and a circuit program for hospitals without library staffing or without libraries. Hospitals participating in the grant program contribute funds and receive grants for collection development. Hospitals participating in the circuit program pay a participation fee and receive regularly scheduled, documented, circuit librarian visits; a collection development grant; and a grant for contract library services. The program contracts with the State University of New York at Buffalo's (UB) Health Sciences Library to provide computerized literature searches; interlibrary loan (ILL) of journal articles, books, and audiovisuals; and ILL referrals.

通过对我国46家公共图书馆馆际互借与文献传递服务的网上调查,分析了公共图书馆馆际互借与文献传递的类型、服务内容、服务方式、服务对象、收费情况,指出我国公共图书馆馆际互借与文献传递存在服务细节有待重视、区域内公共图书馆间的合作较欠缺、缺乏与高校图书馆的合作、缺乏对"联合参考咨询与文献传递服务网"的利用、面向协议馆提供服务的图书馆较少等问题,提出了提高对馆际互借与文献传递服务的重视、加强区域内公共图书馆间的合作、加强与高校图书馆的合作、充分利用"联合参考咨询与文献传递服务网"、完善馆际互借与文献传递服务方式等建议。     

Effective Resource-Sharing and Document Delivery Among Indian Universities: A Study From the INFLIBNET Perspective

Resource-sharing normally follows a network of libraries with decent rules and regulations and provides a common platform for libraries and library staffs to come together, communicate, and extend help to enhance access to information and fulfill the unexpected demands of users. This article studies the use of interlibrary loan and document delivery service at the Information and Library Network Centre under the UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium program. Universities that come under the purview of the University Grants Commission (UGC), Government of India, become members of UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium. The article discusses the recent literature on resource-sharing through interlibrary loan and document delivery service practice in the Indian context. This article suggests improvement of J-Gate Plus discovery and resource-sharing service to enhance access to information resources and for better document delivery.

馆际互借补贴是图书馆帮助读者获得非本馆收藏文献的重要的支持手段,许多国家推出了政府投入的馆际互借支持项目,而图书馆也有自己的馆际互借补贴计划。在充分利用国家投入的馆际互借项目的基础上,建立起图书馆自己的馆际互借政策,有利于全面保障读者使用文献资源。以清华大学图书馆馆际互借补贴政策的完善过程为例,诠释这一思想,希望对其他图书馆有一定的借鉴意义。
     

Survey of audiovisual standards and practices in health sciences libraries

A survey of audiovisual (AV) practices in health sciences libraries was conducted by the Audiovisual Standards and Practices Committee of the Medical Library Association. The objective was to determine the variety and extent of AV practices currently in use in health sciences libraries, as a preliminary step toward developing AV standards.     

许可协议中馆际互借和文献传递条款研究

对数据库引进中所签订的56份许可协议和国外6种主要数字资源许可协议模型进行调研,重点分析其中与馆际互借和文献传递相关的条款,并寻找国际公约和版权法中的法律依据,旨在为国内图书馆在数字资源环境下的馆际互借和文献传递工作提供借鉴。     

高校图书馆馆际互借现状的调查与分析——以湖北地区为例

馆际互借作为资源共享的主要形式和重要保障逐渐成为图书馆界关注的焦点。鉴于馆际互借服务对图书馆的重要性,本文立足于实地调查,对湖北省部分高校馆际互借进行调查,系统地分析了图书馆馆际互借服务的现状和存在的问题,并提出了一些改进想法。参考文献8。     

Just-In-Time: A Case Study of Buying Instead of Borrowing at the University of North Texas Libraries, 2014–2017

There is a trend among academic libraries to increase collaboration between interlibrary loan and collection development to improve patron access to materials and build library collections. Instead of borrowing returnable materials, interlibrary loan may initiate purchases that will become part of the library's collection. This can mean anything from an organizational change combining interlibrary loan with the acquisitions unit or creating new workflows to facilitate purchasing. At the University of North Texas Libraries, the Interlibrary Loan office is a unit of the Access Services Department. Buying instead of borrowing for the ILL unit began with a Demand Driven Acquisitions (DDA) program and has expanded with the establishment of the University of North Texas Libraries' access-based collection development policy. Interlibrary Loan provides “Just-In-Time” (JIT) access to materials not available through regular interlibrary loan sources and adds relevant materials to the Libraries' collections.     

城市图书馆通借通还项目管理与体制创新研究

涉及通借通还的图书馆管理模式现有3种:总馆-分馆管理模式、分散-共建管理模式和分散-整合管理模式。3种管理模式在组织架构、管理链、资产管理、馆藏与服务等方面各有长短。由通借通还的普及引起城市图书馆管理体制改革。作为一个体制创新思路,图书馆直接对市民负责,城市与城区各级人大代表控制拨款,委托文化行政管理部门具体管理,可以把“分灶吃饭”与总分馆制的优越性结合起来。图3。表1。参考文献2。     

TIB's Portal for Audiovisual Media: Combining Manual and Automatic Indexing

The German National Library of Science and Technology (TIB) developed a Web-based platform for audiovisual media. The audiovisual portal optimizes access to scientific videos such as computer animations and lecture and conference recordings. TIB's AV-Portal combines traditional cataloging and automatic indexing of audiovisual media. The article describes metadata standards for audiovisual media and introduces the TIB's metadata schema in comparison to other metadata standards for non-textual materials. Additionally, we give an overview of multimedia retrieval technologies used for the Portal and present the AV-Portal in detail as well as the additional value for libraries and their users.

Profiles in Resource Sharing: Tom Bruno

Abstract

Health sciences libraries are expanding services that use online technologies to support teaching, research, and clinical care needs. Saint Louis University's Health Sciences Center (SLU HSC) Library has developed strong, user-centered, online services in interlibrary loan, bibliographic instruction, and electronic reserves. The authors present their successful experiences in using electronic technologies to improve library services.

Journal articles are provided, often the same day as requested through interlibrary loan, and delivered in electronic format using OCLC's ILLiad program. First-year SLU medical students now complete a self-paced, all online, Health Information Resources course that targets the most relevant biomedical resources, reduces student study time, and is viewed as a model for the entire curriculum. ERes, the electronic reserves program, allows faculty to provide course materials that are accessible at the convenience of students 24 hours a day. These online programs are examples of using electronic technologies to better support user needs for excellent library services.     

Inter-Library Loan Service in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A Case Study of Medical Libraries

The last 20 years have seen a marked increase in co-operation among Saudi medical libraries, with inter-library loan service at the forefront. This is an investigation of the current situation of co-operative inter-lending and resource sharing among medical libraries in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study discusses various methods for providing inter-library loan service including direct inter-lending, lending through union catalogs, and centralized lending. Other resource sharing activities are also described. The case study methodology was employed. Documents, interviews, and personal conversations were utilized to provide needed information. A number of medical libraries were chosen, and their inter-library loan requests for the year 1995 were thoroughly investigated. Results are analyzed, and some concluding remarks for future action are presented.     

QuickDOC: an interlibrary loan department in a microcomputer

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a critical service in most libraries and one that may consume much staff time. QuickDOC, a software program written by a medical librarian, has been designed to expedite and organize the process of requesting loans, keeping records, and preparing reports on ILL activity. The software communicates with DOCLINE, the automated ILL and referral system of the National Library of Medicine (NLM), and simplifies the management of all borrowing and lending, regardless of how requests are transmitted. QuickDOC's creator is very responsive to suggestions from users and continues to enhance the capabilities of this excellent software package.
