In the 1950s and 1960s, Clark Kerr led the University of California's Berkeley campus, and then the University of California as a whole. Throughout these years, he developed a system of managerial strategies. This paper shows how Kerr's administrative views drew upon his background in industrial relations, his liberal theories of pluralistic industrial change, and contemporary understandings of American business organization.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In the contemporary organization of the economy, creativity and branding constitute two distinctive imperatives which generally point in different directions: the former towards newness and change, the latter towards continuity and recognisability. Numerous agents in corporate organizations thus face a conundrum of creativity versus branding, which is perhaps nowhere more pronounced than in the fashion business. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork in a fashion company, I argue that these seemingly incompatible imperatives are inextricably entangled, as their paradoxical relation is solved, even dissolved, in a dynamic interplay between ‘a totemic logic’ and ‘an animist practice’. Thus, a dynamics of totemism and animism unites creativity and branding in the continual pursuit of uniqueness. While totemic and animist modalities are most commonly associated with non-western ontologies and perceived as mutually exclusive, I contend that they are also at work in contemporary commercial processes and that they are enmeshed in, and propelled by, each other. This suggests that these modalities operate together particularly when the making of distinctive identities is critical – as in economic competition today.  相似文献

由于东西方现代性发生时所面对的文化传统、所面临的时代问题、可整合的思想资源不同,尊重女性主体性观念在东西方文化现代性追求中所占据的地位也不同从中国现代文化自身的内在逻辑出发,性别意识状况必须纳入中国现代文学现代性考察的范围。在创作实际层面上,中国现代文学的性别意识,一直呈现出现代性的正面价值前现代性价值、现代性追求的异化状态并存的复杂局面。本文对此展开了详细分析。  相似文献

As universities are increasingly called by their national governments for a more entrepreneurial management of public research results, they started to develop internal structures and policies to take a proactive role in the commercialisation of university research. For the first time, this paper presents a detailed chronicle of how country-level reforms on Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) were translated into organisation-level mechanisms to regulate university-patenting activity. The analysis is based on the complete list of patent policies issued between 1993 and 2009 by the population of Italian universities. Our evidence suggests that universities first dealt with legislative changes on IPRs by enacting isomorphic behaviours, then by creating a community of practices, and finally by leveraging on such community to influence government reforms on IP-related matters. We discuss our results in the light of institutional theory and public policy.  相似文献

Our historical study of Canada’s main research university illuminates the overlooked influence of national identities and interests as forces shaping the institutionalization of technology transfer. Through the use of archival sources we trace the rise and influence of Canadian technological nationalism—a response to Canada’s perceived dependency on the United States’ science and technology. Technological nationalism provided a symbol for producing a shared understanding of the desirability and appropriateness of technology transfer that legitimated the commercial activities of university scientists.  相似文献

现代新儒学一方面主张向西方学习,另一方面又对西方现代文化提出了颇为严厉的批评,表现出了立足于儒家思想的基本背景、力图成就一个更为合理的现代性的理论意向。现代新儒学的基本理论意旨,是力图对反于相对主义、平面化和碎片化,以深度整合的方式将作为人类文化之基本形态的宗教、哲学、科学乃至艺术在精神归趋上统贯为一,使之收归于“仁心”。就处理宗教、哲学与科学之整体关系的基本取向而言,后现代主义与新儒家可以说是代表了面对一个相对主义盛行的时代所可能有的两种正反相对的基本选择。如何在这对立的两极之间找到一条“从容中道”,以寻求人类更健康、合理的存在方式,值得深长思之。  相似文献
