Cooperative Principle and Humorous Conversation

By exploring cooperative principle and conversation,especially from the semantic and pragmatic way,this article tries to explore how the cooperative principle makes effect in humorous conversations.It turns out that the humor comes out more from the semantic as pect.Hence it is proposed that it should focus more on the semantic meaning to achieve humor.At last,the significance of applying humor ous conversation in teaching spoken English is also discussed.     

The Application of CP and PP in Business English

Cooperative principle and politeness principle enjoy great significance in pragmatic field.Via the analysis of certain examples extracted from Business English course-book, this paper aims to study the observance of cooperative principle and politeness principle. The conclusion is reached that the application of CP and PP in pedagogical practice could benefit students’ language application. Meanwhile, this paper also aims to prove that cooperation and politeness are a key factor in communication through which teachers could improve students’ language competence.     

A Probe into Humorous Effects of TV Programs from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle——A Case Study on If You Are the One

This paper probes into the dialogues in If You Are the One based on the theoretical framework of Grice’s Cooperative Principle, with a view to discovering humorous effects and conversational implicature in a certain context. Through the analysis of representative dialogues which obey and violate the maxims respectively, this paper concludes that speakers, by appropriately violating the maxims and unconsciously observing the maxims of the CP, manage to achieve humorous effects and conversational implicature. Meanwhile, this paper aims to help people express themselves appropriately to avoid pragmatic failures and achieve the goal of communication.     

A Study of Humor of The Actor’ s Lines in If You Are the One from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle

In the thesis the author explores the humor of the actor’ s lines in If You Are the One from the perspective of cooperative princi ple and its four maxims in the context of pragmatics.Through analyzing the purposeful violation of the maxims in the environment of the cooperation principle,the author intends to probe into the ways the actors figure out the implicature of humorous utterances and manage to carry on the conversation and the reproduction of the amusing effect.

Analysis of Chinese Euphemism

Euphemism exists in all languages and cultures, Chinese is no exception. This article aims at analyzing Chinese euphemism both from its classification and its pragmatic function. Analysis shows that Chinese euphemism could be roughly classified into the following classes: euphemism avoiding taboo words; euphemism avoiding vulgarity; euphemism reducing or concealing disadvantages and euphemism showing one’s respect. Most of the Chinese euphemisms function at the expense of any maxim or maxims of the CP principle, while almost all of the euphemisms work in conformity with the PP principle.     

A Pragmatic Approach to Vagueness in Diplomatic Language

Fuzzy words are abundant in all human languages,and widely used in diplomatic language without exception.As one of the tactics and speech skills,appropriate vagueness can meet the special requirements of social contact and accomplish the communicative task.Vagueness has become an indispensable artistic skill for diplomatic personnel.If we analyze diplomatic vagueness from the pragmatic perspective,we can find the grounds for its existence.This thesis first discusses three different definitions of vagueness,the characteristics of diplomatic language,and the basic pragmatic theories:the Cooperative Principle,the Politeness Principle,which will be used to analyze vagueness.Then,through diplomatic examples,the author explores,in detail,the positive effects of diplomatic vagueness.From the perspective of Cooperative Principle,diplomatic vagueness violates quality maxim and quantity maxim,so as to reach certain communicative effects.From the perspective of Politeness Principle,diplomatic vagueness may obey tact maxim,agreement maxim,approbation maxim and sympathy maxim.

The contents of the paper are to appear in book form shortly [4]and it has been given in the author’s lectures at Abdus Salam School of Math Sci.GC Univ.Lahore,Pakistan in Feb.,2011.We mean by the exhaustion principle that in a certain way,there is a rule which exhaust all the elements of a system,i.e.,a sort of classification.We shall illustrate this principle by significant examples.Since our examples are related to groups,the exhaustion is mostly of the form of a disjoint union of subsets Hd(dn) exhausting the whole group G:G=∪dnHd(disjoint).

This paper analyzes the actor’s lines to reveal the characterization of the hero Marlin in the animation Finding Nemo from a pragmatic perspective by applying conversational implicature and cooperative principle,especially the violations of maxims of cooperative principle.From the analysis we can see how individualized language is created by the violation of maxims and how individualized language vividly creates characters.This paper gives a totally new perspective to appreciate this stunning animation.

Since Brown and Gilman pioneered the concepts of power and solidarity in 1960 and because of people’s continued research in them,the two terms have been fundamental to sociolinguistic theory.What are the pragmatic functions of them? In order to answer the question,an analysis of power and solidarity is conducted in view of deictic terms,address terms,verb patterns,code-switching and style variation and it tries to probe into the pragmatic functions of power and solidarity on the basis of Jakobson’s theory of language functions.
