Nowadays many college students lack the competence of cross-cultural communication. They can not communicate with each other appropriately. In response to the problem, this paper analyses its cause and puts forward two countermeasures:fostering students’cultural-awareness and positive attitude towards cross-cultural communication;creating an authentic or semi-authentic language environment.A teacher should combine them together and put them into practice in order to improve students’competence of cross-cultural communication.  相似文献

The intention of this present paper is to explore the relationship between culture and perception and the cultural factors that affect people’s perceptions from different cultural backgrounds. This study is based on a case, which is a news report about the cultural conflict between an old Chinese father and her daughter who has been living in Canada for eight years. Detailed information has been acquired by the author using relative books, journals as well as her own understanding and interpretation. It is concluded that to be aware of the cultural factors is of great importance to understand why people from different cultures have quite different perceptions toward the same thing, which can help to reduce the conflicts and misunderstandings in intercultural communication.  相似文献

This paper introduces Kim’s integrative theory of communication and cross-cultural adaptation. Building on a broad range of existing concepts, models, and research data across disciplines, Kim’s theory addresses two central questions: (a) What is the essential nature of the adaptation process? and (b) why are some strangers more successful than others in the adaptation process? The first question is addressed in the form of a process model. The second question is addressed in the form of a structural model. It is by far the most broad-based theoretical account of cross-cultural adaptation.  相似文献

The article gives a brief review on Hinkel’s study "The Use of Modal Verbs as a Reflection of Cultural Values",aiming at improving language teacher’s awareness that culture can influence language learners’ use of modals. At the same time,by pointing out the weakness of Hinkel’s study, the author suggests that the mere acquisition of linguistic competence is insufficient and teachers should integrate current research findings into their transmission of knowledge to learners.  相似文献

Currently English has spread around the world so extensively that it has become a link language across many cultures.Since 1980s,China saw a warm discussion of language, culture and cross-cultural communication. An increasing number of researchers and educators began to be aware of the vital importance of culture in EFL teaching and learning and cultural content has been available in classrooms teaching. However, the development of English teaching and cross-cultural communicative competence is target culture-oriented and the ability of expressiveness of home culture in English is almost ignored. Thus, the thesis seeks to collect the students’ perceptions on expressiveness of Chinese culture in English and the culture teaching in EFL in China.  相似文献

Languages convey cultural information while they are used as tools to communicate. With the development of human society and the frequencies of intercultural communication, cultural differences may impact on people’s normal communications.Cultural differences between English and Chinese appear in many aspects of languages.Animal words are influenced by such cultural factors as geographical conditions, historical developments, traditional customs, mythology and fables, etc. So they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.A similar animal word may have different connotative meanings in English and Chinese respectively, but sometimes different animal words have the same connotations.Whether they are different or not will reflect cultural differences between Chinese and English. Thus, through illustration, classification and comparison of English and Chinese animal words, the thesis aims to explore the cultural differences between English and Chinese. What’s more, the thesis aims to help English learns have a better understanding of English culture and develop the abilities of English language study.  相似文献

Language and culture are intrinsically interconnected and interactive with each other. On one hand, language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it:language expresses, embodies and symbolizes cultural reality. On the other, language is influenced and shaped by culture;it reflects culture. This kind of relationship of language and culture is indispensible, which is clearly reflected in and especially ture with their play of roles in communication.Through the overviews of language and culture, and based on the case studies of three types of communication(cross-cultural,intercultural and multicultural communication),this article is aimed at discussing the relationship of language and culture in detail from the perspective of communication, and further explain and prove the importance of language and culture in successful communication.  相似文献

Teaching involves finding out about students’misunderstandings, intervening to change them and creating a context of learning that encourages students to engage with the subject matter. This theory of making student learning possible is very much concerned with the content of what students have to learn in relation to how it should be taught.Evaluation implies collecting information about our work, interpreting the information and making judgments about which actions we should take to improve practice.Evaluation is an analytical process that is intrinsic to good teaching.  相似文献

Poems are the products of national culture, and A Dream of Red Mansions (A DRM) is the collection of Chinese culture in the era when the novel was written, so poems in A DRM express a wealth of cultural messages. According to the Limits of Translatability raised by Catford in 1965, cultural untranslatability occurs when a relevant situational feature for the SL text is absent in the TL. So this paper aims to find problems of cultranslation of poems in A DRM, and tries to further restrict cultural untranslatability by applying compensation strategies.  相似文献

With the marked globalization of cultural transmission and wide opening of the Chinese market, Chinese movie & TV industry faces unprecedented opportunities and challenges as well. What we face is not only the enormous impact of the economic form of film industry; what is more, in the field of culture, we will also face the enormous impact of"cultural imperialism". This paper focuses on the"cultural imperialism"existed in global especially American films. To counter the cultural empirical globalization of American films growing in great intensity, this paper discusses the theory of"culture rebounds"presented earliest in France. Moreover, under the influence of the theory especially in Chinese film circles, it makes research and analysis to deal with the present situation.  相似文献

Language and culture are closely related with each other: language is the carrier and a fundamental part of culture, while culture has an intrinsic and indispensable impact on language and is also reflected in language. So if in the language learning and teaching, attention is only paid to the linguistic forms but the relationship between language and culture is ignored, then the learner’s linguistic ability will not be equivalent to his or her social and cultural communication competence. Especially in the times of globalization with increasing transna tional and cross-cultural communication, the knowledge of cultural background is the must prerequisite for not only the avoidance of cul tural "conflict" but the success of communication. Based on the studies of several cross-cultural communication cases and the analysis of the relationship between language and culture, including the famous Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, this paper is aimed to analyze the intrinsic and in dispensable relationship between language learning and culture learning.  相似文献

Alice Walker’s famous short story Everyday Use reveals African American’s awareness of cultural heritage, which is deeply affected by thedouble consciousnessas well as their racial identification in the Civil Rights Movement. Through the exploration of the cultural conflict reflected in Everyday Use by relating to the influence on black people produced by the AfricanAmerican Civil Rights Movement, and the discussion of the different attitudes of the mother and her daughters towards their cultural heritage, the essay aims to reinforce Alice Walker’s claim that any attempt to lay too much emphasis on the ideas of utilitarian return to black people’s traditional culture is shallow and superficial.  相似文献

A certain kind of culture always leaves its special stamp on its language which de- cides the relationship of culture and translation. Without mastering the foreign coun- tries' cultures, non-native learners may find it hard to understand. As we all know, humans use languages to communicate with each other, however, different kinds of languages may cause us many problems. Different cultures may conflict with each other, so a literal translation is not always the closest to the original meaning. Culture differences add difficulties to translation. That's why translation plays an important role in the different languages' communication. It is not because transla- tion is the transformation of language but also because it interprets culture. In the development of intercultural communication, translation has its undeniable mission. However, there appears a phenomenon in the highly advanced society that people are using more and more methods instead of translating to help communication. Naturally, people doubt whether the existence of translation is necessary; that is the key points of this thesis. After showing the development of translation and culture, and the relationship among culture, language and translation, the author draws a conclusion that translation would disappear in the cultural fusion.  相似文献

This paper first introduced the main contents of the movie:Forrest Gump.On one hand, the movie advocates truth as well as honesty. It tries to help people to get rid of the alienation of modern civilization, and find the true beauty of human nature. On the other hand it makes the movie a classic of contemporary American culture. The essay made some analysis to the years and events which the movie has talked about. Then by detailed analyzing of the main character:Jenny, and the comparison between Jenny and Forrest, their different fates and the values they represent, the paper highlighted the different destiny caused by the values they hold and showed that they were strongly influenced by the mixture of culture values of that period. At last, with the combination of the main characters Jenny and Forrest,it indicates that different life values have melted into one,and the subculture finally gave way to the main culture.  相似文献

China issued two educational principles in 1960s and 1990s respectively. Both are composed of three fundamental elements-general aim of education, concrete purposes of education and ways of realizing them. Both emphasize the combination of education and work as well as the all-round development of the educatee. The difference between the two is that the former stipulates that education should serve the proletarian politics and education of laboring people while the latter provides that education should serve the socialist modernization and cultivation of builders and successors of socialism.  相似文献
