Witnessing and the Failure of Communication

This article examines the Romani Holocaust experiences by mapping out the silences that haunt this question. As a case study, the article uses the testimonial documentary Porraimos: Europe’s Gypsies in the Holocaust and argues that the Romani Holocaust question is entangled in a moral discourse described in Lyotard’s Le Differend. Bearing witness to the differend can give new insights into the understanding of the Holocaust, the conceptualization of Romani identity, and the framing of media witnessing. The article concludes with a discussion of the face and its relation to witnessing arguing that the affective feel of the differend that interpellates one as a witness is delivered through the face.

Communication research and the idea of process

The term “process” admits of two definitions in the philosophy of science: one based on a 19th century mechanistic view, the other consistent with quantum relativistic notions. Scholars in speech communication have misused these essentially contradictory definitions. Methodological notions have often been based on a deterministic view of cause while, at the same time, definitions of communication have been based on Whitehead's view of reality as “becoming.” As a result, theory and research have been inconsistent. To implement the contemporary notion of “process,” ideas of methodological rigor based on causal determinism must be substituted by notions of carefulness based on acknowledgement of the observer's involvement in his own observations.     

Supportive Communication and the Adequate Paraphrase

The active listening paradigm recommends that helpers paraphrase the thoughts and feelings of support seekers. But how? This study compared evaluations of four types of paraphrase messages derived from the work of Polanyi. Results showed that certain forms of paraphrasing are evaluated as more helpful, sensitive, and supportive than others, though differences were not in full alignment with theoretical predictions, and results were dependent on narrative prompt. Our study provides initial empirical data that question the practical advice given to informal help providers found in our academic scholarship and textbooks. Formal and informal helping relationships have many similarities and differences that should be acknowledged and tested with a variety of methods and populations.     

"信息疲劳"与传播控制

公众在信息接受方面存在"信息疲劳"现象,"定州事件"受关注度调查的相关结果足以证明.如此"敏感"的信息在当今已经变得并不敏感,可见"信息疲劳"有可以利用的一面.通过详细剖析"定州事件",本文指出媒体的及时报道不仅有利于加快问题解决、维护部分公众的切身利益;而且能够维护信息透明、保障全体公众的知情权.最后从国家治理的角度出发,提出放宽传播控制能够促使社会管理趋向"善治".     

Federal Reserve Communication and the Media

ABSTRACT

The effectiveness of monetary policy and political legitimacy of central banks depend on monetary policymakers ability to communicate through the media. The literature on monetary policy communication remains disconnected from relevant research in communication and media studies. This article uses a new database of Federal Reserve communication events merged with a database of 310,565 news stories to analyze the prominence and distribution of coverage of the Fed and the response of coverage to communication events.
