The Research of Cooperative Learning Effects on College Students＇ Learning Anxiety

Since Krashen put forward the Affective Filter Hypothesis, more and more concern has been paid to the anxiety problem in Second and foreign language teaching and learning. Meanwhile, CL （cooperative learning） has gained much attention in recent years, both at home and abroad. Most researches （Oxford ＆ Ehrman, 1993; Kagan, 1994; Slavin, 1995） on CL indicated that CL is a classroom procedure which can lower anxiety and improve learning outcomes. Although the researches abroad have suggested that CL has a positive impact on reducing foreign language learning anxiety, few empirical researches on CL have been conducted in China. Moreover, according to the author＇s observation, anxiety is most obvious in oral English activities. Therefore, this thesis attempts to investigate some Chinese non-English freshmen＇s foreign language learning anxiety. Two classes are involved in the study： one as the experimental class instructed with CL method, the other as the control class taught with the traditional teaching method. By using a classical instrument, the FLCAS （foreign language classroom anxiety scale）, this study examined the subjects＇ foreign language learning anxiety. According to the analysis and comparison of the first and second FLCAS, the author finds CL has a significant effect on reducing students＇ foreign language learning anxiety.

Study on Chinese and American Compliments

Chinese and Americans have different cultural background. They value different principles in expressing compliments and respond to them. Chinese tend to be self-denial to show modesty. Americans have a tendency of self-praising to demonstrate their confidence. Based on Leech＇ s politeness principle, the paper analyzes typical instances. In conclusion, as language learner, we should aware it and prepare to be bicultural instead of bilingual. As a Chinese, we should keep our own culture identity instead of Americanized.

A Study of Tense Errors in Chinese College English-Major Students＇ Writings Based on Corpus

对《中国学习者英语语料库》中的ST5和ST6两个子语库中的所有时态错误按16种时态分类进行分析,结果表明一般过去时、一般现在时和现在完成时是最容易出错的时态。其中尤以一般过去时错误为最多。说明一般过去时是中国英语专业学习者最难掌握的时态。进一步分析发现,中国英语专业学生的一般过去时错误主要集中在时态选择型错误上,主要表现在将一般过去时误用为一般现在时和现在完成时。这主要是由于学生呆板地依据时间状语,未能很好地区分时态的语义特征等原因造成的。此外,动词凸显度和时间状语两种语内因素会显著影响一般过去时的使用。     

First-year Students＇ Psychological and Behavior Adaptation to College： The Role of Coping Strategies and Social Support

This study investigates 311 first-year students＇ psychological and behavior adaptation to college and the mediate role of coping strategies and social support. The investigates reveal that： （1） first-year students who are from countryside, live in poor families, speak in dialects or major in science and engineering have poorer adaptation to college than their counterparts; （2） first-year students＇ psychological and behavior adaptation to college was influenced by not only directly coping strategies, but also indirectly social supports. Positive coping strategies maybe make students＇ adaptation to college better.

The Analysis of Comparison Between English and Chinese Animal Idioms

Idioms are essence of a language and a kind of special and fixed phrases or short sentences in the long period of language use.Because animals have been considered as people’s best friends for hundreds of years,people adopt different species of animals as metaphors to express all their emotions.However,due to the different national characteristics between English and Chinese,such as geographical conditions and tradition so in most cases easterners and westerners have different attitudes and understanding towards same animals,of course,some animal idioms have the same meaning.     

Comparison between men＇s and women＇s Chinese language

Language is used to exchange information and to communicate. It contains several properties including the structural relationship--grammar, the context--pragmatics, content and meaning--semantics. These can all be considered as the characteristics to distinguish one language from another. As it is known to all that different lanauaaes have their own grammar, pragmatics and semantics.     

The Effect of Age and Employment on Students’ Perceptions of Online Course Quality

ABSTRACT

Three thousand, one hundred sixty students involved in online instruction at 31 colleges and universities across the United States completed a survey designed to probe into whether statements derived from 8 standards in the Quality Matters^TM (QM) rubric contributed to their success. The 43-item survey instrument measured students’ perceptions of online course quality. The effect of age and employment status on their perceptions was measured. Based on a series of ANOVA (analysis of variance)s, it was found that the highest rated standard was QM3 on Assessment and Measurement. There were significant differences between age groups. Students under 45, contrasted to those over 45, highly valued clarity and appropriateness of assessments and clear criteria for grading. For students above the age of 45, QM6 on Course Technology was valued highest. They placed a high value on the tools and media that support learning objectives and classmate interactivity. QM3 was rated highest across all employment groups—those employed part-time, full-time, and those who were unemployed. Standards 1 (Course Overview and Introduction), 2 (Learning Objectives), 4 (Resources and Materials), and 7 (Learner Support) were valued higher by students working full-time and those who were unemployed compared with those working part-time. It is likely that students who work part-time are not as focused on academics as are those who do not work. They may not be as motivated to perform well as students who work full-time. Implications for course designers and instructors are discussed.     

Evaluating Chinese College Students’ English Compositions:Different Writing Corrective Feedbacks between a Chinese Teacher and a Foreign Teacher & the Attitudes of College Students

The study aims to uncover the differences between a Chinese writing teacher and a foreign writing teacher in evaluating Chinese college students’ English compositions and find out students’ attitudes towards different kinds of feedbacks. The data collection method, sample analysis and questionnaire have been implemented to probe for the results. The results are supposed to give some suggestions to the English writing class in Chinese universities.

The Methodology of Self-correction on College Students’ English Composition and Results

Based on the related theories of Corpus Linguistics and Error Analysis, this paper is aimed to evaluate the effect of selfcorrection through the educational experiment, with non-English major students using web corpus to identify and self-correct their errors as the subjects. To help art students improve their English writing skills, the search engine of and sentence database of online dictionary of the internet corpus are effective and helpful.     

Cultural Perspectives on Student Behaviors： A Study of American and Chinese Students

To explore factors that influence the behavior of Chinese students and strategies for interventions, this paper presents a cross-cultural study on Chinese and American students. It examines the relationships between students＇ behaviors and the cultural influences; implications for special educators who work with minority students with emotional/behavioral disorders （E/BD） will also be discussed.

以桂林师专为研究总体,采用问卷调查方法定量描述了在校大学生的恋爱现状及婚恋态度,试图为高校婚恋教育研究提供实践依据。研究表明：大学生婚恋观总趋势是积极健康的,但仍存在某些偏差,如恋爱动机复杂化;注重追求精神享受;对性持开放和宽容的态度;男女生在人际交往、消费行为上不同程度受到了恋爱的影响;初恋年龄的提前和结婚年龄的推后进一步强化了恋爱和婚姻的分离,这些有可能成为当代大学生婚恋教育的重点和难点所在。
