Comparative/International Research on Juvenile Justice Issues: A Review of Juvenile Justice Specialty Journals

In recent years, leaders in the field of criminology and criminal justice have advocated for comparative/international and collaborative research; however, there is uncertainty regarding how much comparative/international research on the topic of juvenile justice is being conducted and how well information on juvenile justice issues with a cross-cultural or international focus is being disseminated. This study analyzed the number and focus of studies on international/comparative juvenile justice papers in the four major US juvenile justice specialty journals (Juvenile & Family Court Journal, Journal of Juvenile Justice, UC Davis Journal of Juvenile Law & Policy, and Youth Violence & Juvenile Justice). Data came from 567 papers published during the period of 2000–2013. The authors discuss the roles of the juvenile justice specialty journals to encourage the study of juvenile justice internationally.     

Reason,Liberalism, and Democratic Education: A Deweyan Approach to Teaching About Homosexuality

Teaching about homosexuality, especially in a positive light, has long been held to be a controversial issue. There is, however, a view of the capacity for reason that finds that those who deem homosexuality to be controversial will ultimately contradict themselves, becoming unreasonable. By this standard of reason, homosexuality should be treated as non controversial in schools. In this essay, John Petrovic argues that this epistemic position is problematic. Instead, he defends a Deweyan epistemology that casts reason as, in part, a set of socially acquired habits of mind. People who have been socialized into heterosexist habits of mind must be exposed to counterhegemonic discourses. One such discourse can be found in the public values of liberal democracy through which the practice of reason must be pursued. Petrovic discusses the practical guidance provided by assuming a view of normative reason versus habituated reason in terms of both pedagogy and curriculum.     

A Nonviolent Approach to Social Justice Education

This article advocates a nonviolent approach to social justice education. First, social justice education literature is reviewed, and two contrasting and influential approaches—critical theory and poststructural theory—are the focus of critical analysis. A nonviolent approach is proposed as an alternative. Second, the notion of social justice is reexamined to reveal its tie with the notion of the individual, and the concept of nonviolence in its emphasis on relationality is discussed. Three facets of nonviolence are further elaborated: relational dynamics, inner peace, and nonviolent means. Third, these facets are translated into important aspects of a pedagogy of nonviolence: Integrating the inner and the outer work; shifting the struggles of opposites to the interdependence of differences; using and improvising nonviolent teaching strategies. To enrich theoretical understandings and inspire practical insights, this article also interweaves international wisdom traditions (including African ubuntu, Buddist nonduality, and Taoist dynamics), my teaching experiences, and the formulation of a nonviolent social justice pedagogy in teacher education.     

A WAY WITH WORDS: A Unique Approach to Literacy and Career Development

This article describes a unique collaboration between the Career Center at the University of Missouri–Columbia, Columbia Public Schools and the community. A WAY WITH WORDS is an America Reads community literacy program that has enriched the educational experience of graduate, undergraduate and K–5 students since 1996. Teams of undergraduate volunteers led by graduate students in Counseling Psychology and Educational Leadership (ELPA) tutor local children in an effort to increase literacy. The teams interact and communicate with children, parents, teachers and principals as they serve during school and in after-school programs that they co create with school administrators and community members. Tremendous opportunities exist for learning about socio-economically and increasing ethnically diverse communities. During a biweekly seminar, team leaders lead career exploration activities that focus on mentoring, multicultural issues and team building. The program seeks to cultivate civic responsibility as an aspect of career development through communication, relatedness and reflection.     

An Approach to Teaching About Diversity in American Communities

This article demonstrates an approach to incorporating newspaper reports into traditional teaching about American communities. Newspaper feature articles are summarized within a conceptual framework, illustrating ways in which the popular press can be used to examine issues of community ethnic, racial, and cultural diversity and community change.

Dyslexics and Othering: an anti-definitional approach to Lexism

Lexism (the Othering of dyslexics) currently lacks a clear definition. In this conceptual article, I argue that Lexism does not require any such definition; indeed definitions generally can be unhelpful. To understand Lexism I provide examples of how we might use the concept in a series of hypothetical cases. Exemplars avoid the need for definitions, which, for a soft category such as Lexism, would be too constraining. I conclude by drawing on the work of Paulo Freire as a theoretical lens to enhance further how we might understand Lexism, and dyslexia.     

Letty M. Russell: A Feminist Liberation Approach to Educating for Justice

This article examines the Rev. Dr. Letty M. Russell's feminist liberation approach to educating for justice by reviewing the major themes in her writings. Educating for justice was rooted in Russell's life and ministry, namely, a sense of God's mission to reconcile and mend the world; partnership as sharing in God's mission to effect justice; and hospitality as a means of welcoming all to the table of fellowship and of life. Russell used an action/reflection model that is based in experience, draws on Scripture and theology, and works toward transformation. Her experience of being marginalized—as a Christian educator and then as a woman pastor in East Harlem where she learned firsthand how injustice and oppression marginalized her parishioners—developed into a concern for and solidarity with those on the margins of society. Letty Russell dedicated her life to achieving justice and celebrating the reign of God in our midst. In effect, educating for justice was at the core of Letty Russell's life and work.

一首追求光明的心曲--谈巴金和他的《灯》

巴金的散文《灯》以憎恶黑暗、热爱灯光、渴求光明为思想红线，紧紧围绕“灯光”这一核心，展开了丰富的联想，有现实的事例，有往昔的回忆，有典故的引证，容量大、选材广，但却写得层层深入。最后首尾照应。指出“灯光是不会灭的”，点明了主题，真正做到了“形散而神不散。”     

A Constructivist-Informed Approach to Teaching Swimming

Interest in constructivism has fueled enthusiasm for the development of games and team-sport pedagogy over the past decade, but individual sports have yet to receive the same attention. In this article we redress this oversight by suggesting that constructivist perspectives on learning can be used to develop student-centered, inquiry-based approaches to teaching individual sports. We set out to provide examples of how this might be achieved by outlining the ways in which constructivist theories of learning can be employed to inform the teaching of swimming. Typically characterized by high repetition and a strong emphasis on technical mastery in a stable and predictable environment, swimming has escaped the attention of researchers in the physical education field interested in exploring the contributions that constructivism can make to enhancing learning. To emphasize the significance of the physical environment for learning, we suggest two approaches for teaching swimming in the two very different contexts of the pool and the surf to explore the implications that this holds for learning and teaching.     

A Constructivist Approach to Teaching Permutations and Combinations

A lesson is described where students construct their own knowledge of permutations and combinations by exploring a problem situation. This helps students gain an appreciation of real-world implications of these topics while developing a strong conceptual understanding of them.
