Designing and implementing an instructional triptych for a digital future

In response to the evolving needs of students and faculty, a small team of librarians rebuilt their library instruction program from the ground-up in 2020. The new approach consisted of three aspects: shifting introductory lessons to easily-accessible Canvas LMS modules, revamping LibGuides, and introducing a credit-bearing course. Together, they allowed librarians to move beyond traditional one-shot instruction, form deeper partnerships with faculty, and make the expertise of librarians more accessible. While the impetus for change was the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the new program laid the groundwork for rethinking traditional approaches to instruction and finding better ways to meet faculty and students at the point of need.     

Hello Americans: Paul Harvey and the Rhetorical Construction of Modern Agrarianism

This study examines Paul Harvey, the nation's most popular radio broadcaster, and explains his lasting success through a content analysis of selected broadcasts. Findings reveal that Harvey is a national opinion leader for millions of Americans, urban and rural, who identify with the values of agrarianism. His daily news program emphasizes the importance of the common person through strategic choices in both content and structure. By use of such choices, Harvey presents a predictable and orderly interpretation of the day's events that generates a sense of stability and comfort for his audience.     

Employability Skills,The Student Path,and The Role of The Academic Library and Partners

This case study explores the introduction of a university wide employability program by the World of Work Careers Centre (WOWCC) at Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU). The article reports the background against which an employability program was implemented; the justification and growing demand for more emphasis on employability skills in graduates; references the changes in academic libraries and services delivered; and, how these changed enabled WOWCC to work in consultation with the libraries to ensure a seamless and successful mode of delivery.

Miley,CNN and The Onion

Following a twerk-heavy performance by Miley Cyrus on the Video Music Awards program, CNN featured the story on the top of its website. The Onion—a fake-news organization—then ran a satirical column purporting to be by CNN's Web editor explaining this decision. Through textual analysis, this paper demonstrates how a Fifth Estate comprised of bloggers, columnists and fake-news organizations worked to relocate mainstream journalism back to within its professional boundaries.     

The Internet,Public Libraries,and the Digital Divide

Virtually every public library in the United States provides public access Internet computers as a role central to its mission. This article addresses the issue of why the Internet matters for public libraries, both in terms of impacts on the general public, particularly the digitally disadvantaged (part one of the article) and impacts on libraries themselves (part two of the article). Each part of this report begins with an extensive literature review, followed by a data analysis section. In part one, the author uses the 2000 United States Census dataset to evaluate library efforts to bridge the digital divide, by analyzing differences in the growth of public terminals in library systems serving counties with different levels of household income, households in poverty, non-white households, and non-English-speaking households. The analysis finds no disparity in the number of public computers available in areas with high and low incomes but finds a significant—and widening—disparity in the number of computers available in areas with a higher versus lower percentage of non-white and non-English-speaking households. In part two of the report, the author uses a random effects linear regression model to estimate the effects of Internet access on library usage. This analysis finds that having Internet terminals (versus having no Internet terminals) has a significant positive effect on a library's visits and reference transactions, but not on a library's circulation. An increase in the number of Internet terminals has no significant effect, positive or negative, on visits, reference transactions, or circulation.     

The systematization,development, and application of grid-system technologies

This article systemizes grid systems of different types according to their main categories and features that determine their technical and functional possibilities. It considers intelligent grid systems and itemizes the directions by which the present-day models, algorithms, and tools of the software for grid systems, including those with elements of artificial intelligence, are developed. It supplies information about the implemented intelligent software-hardware systems for monitoring and the appraisals of the technical condition of objects in national and regional networks of the mainline power supply.
