A Technical/Strategic Paradigm for Online Executive Education

This article discusses the development and delivery of online courses for the executive education audience. The goal is to introduce a new framework, the technical/strategic paradigm, that will help educators to identify the pedagogical needs of disparate executive groups and adjust their online course development plans accordingly. We describe how four key elements of online courses (course structure, content‐based learning materials, assignments, and learning assessment) should be fashioned in a way that honors the technical or strategic focus of the learning environment. How the technical/strategic paradigm molds well with many different types of executive educational audiences and settings is illustrated. Course developers seeking advice on how to put these ideas into practice will find lists of resources and implementable recommendations. Ultimately, we argue that some of the pitfalls that faculty experience when transitioning from a traditional business school environment to an online executive education environment can be attributed to a misunderstanding of the degree to which students expect technical versus strategic content.

Weblog Technology for Instruction,Learning, and Information Delivery*

Ever since Weblog emerged as an infusive online communication tool over the last decade, its impacts have been witnessed by the Internet society at large. Meanwhile, more and more universities and colleges are offering online classes enhanced by Web technology. In this article, we investigate the role of Weblog combined with face‐to‐face lectures through a three‐phase study that examines college students' perception of Weblog used in class. Ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) techniques are employed to recognize meaningful patterns from collected data. The findings lie in the aspects of: relationship between level of study and the perceived value of Weblog, the relationship between level of Weblog experience and the perceived value of Weblog, and factors contributing to students' perception of Weblog usage. As the first work of its kind examining Weblog adoption from student perspective, this article provides educators, researchers, and practitioners with conceptual and practical references.     

简论我国图书馆远程教育的发展

教育是图书馆的基本职能。随着图书馆自身的发展和远程教育对文献信息服务不断上升的需求,图书馆对远程教育的优势地位越来越明显。文章利用文献计量学的原理力求梳理出我国图书馆远程教育理论发展的脉络,并对我国图书馆远程教育的发展实践进行了追踪和调研。     

远程教育与传统教育的共性与差异

该文从学校教育的组成要素和教育的规范程度探讨了远程教育与传统教育两种教育形态的共性,从教育的时空、面授的连续程度和教学模式三方面分析了两者的差异和联系。认为一方面,不能简单套用传统教育的做法,另一方面,要从传统教育理论中吸取营养,发展远程教育理论体系。

Student‐to‐Student Interaction Revisited: A Case Study of Working Adult Business Students in Online Courses*

Faculty teaching in online environments are universally encouraged to incorporate a variety of student‐to‐student learning activities into their courses. Although there is a body of both theoretical and empirical work supporting this, adult professional students participating in an online MBA program at an urban business school reported being at best indifferent and often negative regarding these learning activities. A case study was performed to explore how pervasive this attitude was and the possible reasons for it. Through various sources of data and exploration, we discovered that common interactive modalities are not associated with either perceived learning or satisfaction. A content analysis of a data analysis course revealed that 64.5% of responses recalled student‐to‐student interactivities when responding to a “learned least from” query. We identified three possible reasons for these negative responses: time inefficiency, interaction dysfunction, and flexibility intrusion. We conclude that, although some working professional students probably do learn from student‐to‐student interactivity, the costs incurred may be too great. If working adult students present a different profile than those students typically represented in academic research and thus have different needs and expectations, we may need to rethink the design of online education delivered to them.     

Absenteeism in Undergraduate Business Education: A Proposed Model and Exploratory Investigation*

One issue in undergraduate business education remaining underexamined is student absenteeism. In this article, the literature on undergraduate absenteeism is reviewed culminating in a proposed conceptual framework to guide future research, and an exploratory investigation of management students’ attitudes about absenteeism is conducted. Implications for research practice are discussed.

成人教育与远程教育的结合是现代信息技术的发展有了质的飞跃后,各高校常用的一种成人教育的模式与手段。摆脱传统课堂束缚,跨越时空限制的成人远程教育具备了诸多优点,但并没有取得其应有的声誉,学习者甚至有被人疑为＂水货＂的尴尬之困,对＂围观者＂论点的分析和对成人远程教育的再解读与再认知应会有助于其进步。     

浅析现代远程教育对话教育模式的构建

对话教育是在重新审视教育中的师生关系的基础上建立起来的一套理论和主张。现代远程教育与对话教育的关系源远流长,对话深入渗透于现代远程教育中。现代远程教育要全面借鉴对话教育的哲学思想、理论观念、民主意识、实践经验,按照人文关怀、民主平等、自由开放、合作交流的原则,积极培训专职教师、注重资源建设、创造良好环境、提供技术支持,科学构建适合自己的对话教育模式,不断提高教育质量。     

我国网络教育质量管理范式研究

教育质量管理大致经历了质量控制、质量保障和全面质量管理三个阶段或三种范式的探索.借用这种一分为三的分析框架,本文采用全部调查与个案分析相结合的方式,调查国家教育部正式批准试点的高校网络教育学院的质量管理情况.研究发现,教育质量管理的每个阶段或每种范式在我国网络教育质量管理活动中都时有体现.我国网络教育质量管理的典型规定表明,注重毕业生“零缺陷”、重视学员的“顾客”地位、质量管理信息公开已是其显著特点.教育理论界宜针对问题加强研究,在促进网络教育建构质量文化的同时避免消费主义倾向.     

Implementing Comprehensive Teacher Training in Business Doctoral Programs

The advent of digital course offerings, the use of social media, the integration of the Khan Academy into curricula, the use of smart phones and tablets, and massive online courses place greater emphasis than ever on effective teaching. While business schools fund faculty development in teaching, too few doctoral programs offer systematic teacher training. We discuss the lack of, and the need for, comprehensive teacher‐training programs. We present the Robinson College of Business model and offer recommendations on how to get started. It is time for PhD programs to certify that their students are capable of teaching upon graduation.
