Race,class and the South African progressive press

The shift from primary to secondary industry during the 1970s resulted in the growth of trade unions and community organisations in the cities. An anti-apartheid press developed as adjuncts to these organisations and have provided the gravitational centre for resistance against apartheid connecting community struggles to the national struggle for democracy. This paper examines structure, objectives and conventions of this press and the stale response to the development of this press.     

Creating Classrooms of and for Activism at the Intersections of Class,Race, Ethnicity,Gender, and Disability

In this article the authors describe pedagogy which rests on commitments to solidarity, activism, and intersectional understandings of personhood and social (in)justices. The authors seek to create accessible classrooms where our many selves and critical consciousness can be in (dis)comforting conversation with one another. Then, they hope to bring activism to the streets.     

Nostalgia,homesickness and emotional formation on the eighteenth-century Grand Tour

Nostalgia and homesickness were well-known eighteenth-century ailments. Undertaking protracted travels, Grand Tourists were potential sufferers, yet these emotional afflictions are absent from the Tour's lengthy lists of hazards. Querying this and applying history of emotions approaches to the histories of the Tour, masculinity and the family, this article examines how Tourists and tutors navigated nostalgia and homesickness as emotions that sat uneasily with the Tour's wider aims of masculine formation. Such investigations offer a means of unpicking the complex, contradictory demands placed on young gentlemen during their emotional formation. Through this, it contributes to wider reconsiderations of eighteenth-century masculinity.

The digital force in forced migration: Imagined affordances and gendered practices

ABSTRACT

This article illustrates through two case studies how gendered practices structure imagined affordances of technologies. Using the example of two women seeking asylum in Germany, the article shows how the women engaged with the affordances of visibility and sociality and how institutionalized living associated with the asylum bureaucracy and gendered logics reinforced by that system shaped the women’s engagement. The women used creative tactics to engage with technology, skillfully navigating and appropriating the terrain of situated gendered discourses. The article reiterates the importance of understanding how gendered practices and norms intersect with forced movement but also argues for exploring more how technology structures gendered imaginations, discourses, and practices in relation to migration. In addition, the article calls for examining imagined technological affordances within their historical, political, and institutionalized settings in order to avoid a technocentric perspective.
