Early dental journalism: a mirror of the development of dentistry as a profession

The rise of dentistry from a mechanical trade to a profession has often been attributed to the so-called "triumvirate" of organization, education, and journal literature. This essay focuses on one part of the triumvirate, examining the role of journals in the growth of dentistry as a profession, from the appearance of the first journal in 1839 to the publication of the Index to Dental Literature in 1921. Rather than discussing the history of individual titles, it identifies some of the broader issues and problems that confronted early dental journalism. The evolution of dental journals from trade house publications to independent scientific literature mirrored the movement toward professional status in dentistry during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Librarian-facilitated problem-based learning course in a school of dental medicine

While problem-based learning has been used in medical practice for several decades, dental education was slower to adapt this education model. However, as dental curricula are embracing this pedagogy, dental and other health sciences librarians are in a position to provide important curricular support. This article will detail one dental liaison librarian's experience with facilitating a problem-based, case-based studies course within the curriculum of a dental school.

THE LITERATURE OF FUND RAISING

The author argues that the profession of librarianship is in crisis. She seeks to identify the characteristics and analyse the qualities of this phenomenon in order to draw conclusions about future trends and directions for the profession. It is argued that this crisis is an outward sign of a deeper transformation which is taking place and which affects the discipline as a whole including education and practice. The recent evolution of the profession is traced against the background of the broader transition from the modern to the postmodern era. The object is to reveal how the widespread social, cultural and technological changes of the 21st century are impacting on the library, the librarian, the customer or client and the fundamental nature of information itself.     

MLIS面向职业化的发展路径探讨

考察图书情报职业在我国的发展变化及表征,指出职业性是MLIS（图书情报硕士）的本质特征,当前图书情报职业种类不断增加,领域不断拓展。针对丰富的图书情报实践工作,结合职业化内涵分析,总结MLIS职业化教育的现状与困境。在此基础上,从发挥行业企业作用、强化培养过程的实践性、推动以职业资格认证制度为导向的外部质量评价体系的建立、构建面向职业化的教育模式4个角度探讨基于职业化导向的MLIS发展路径。

Collection development education: An Australian perspective

This paper describes efforts by the library profession in Australia to improve the teaching of collection development, especially attempts to achieve greater articulation between professional practice and professional education at university level. It surveys a number of important seminars and workshops, reviews a set of educational guidelines, and offers as a case study the curricular response of a specific library school (School of Information Studies, Charles Sturt University—Riverina) to professional concerns regarding collection development education.

美国图书馆学教育质量控制评析

文章试从整个图书馆职业的视角，分析了美国图书馆职业对图书馆学教育质量和发展方向实施控制的机制，重点分析了其中的资质鉴定制度及其存在的问题。论文指出，美国ALA的专业资质鉴定制度与职业资格准入制度及其他面向整个职业团体的交流平台遥相呼应成为图书馆学教育质量的监控体系，这一体系促使图书馆学教育不断改进和提高，不断顺应社会环境和整个图书馆职业的需求。尽管ALA的专业资质鉴定制度目前存在着一些问题、面临来自各方的挑战，但总的来说，这种质量监控程序不会消失，以类似制度指导、监控图书馆学教育应是历史发展的必然。     

Sharing MedlinePlus®/MEDLINE® for information literacy education (SMILE): a dental public health information project

The SMILE project represented a partnership among the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Libraries, the Gateway Clinic in Laredo, and the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District. The project focused on improving dental practitioners' access to reliable information resources and integrating the best evidence into public health dental practice. Through its training program, SMILE cultivated a set of "power information users" among the dentists, dental hygienists, and community health workers (promotores) who provided public health preventive care and oral health education. The dental public health practitioners gained information literacy skills and increased their knowledge about reliable sites such as blogs, PubMed?, and MedlinePlus?. This project fostered opportunities for expanded partnerships with public health personnel.

Librarians' Roles in Evidence-Based Dentistry Education: A Review of Literature and a Survey in North America

This study describes the current roles of dental librarians in Evidence-based Dentistry (EBD) education including their perceptions of EBD and barriers to their involvement. A Web-based survey was distributed to the dental librarians in North America, with a 71% response rate. The results showed that the majority of dental librarians are playing multiple and diverse roles in EBD education. The most frequently cited barrier to their involvement is the low level of interest from the dental faculty/student/school. Most dental librarians felt competent in supporting EBD, although continuing education needs in both EBD and teaching skills were pointed out.
