Purpose-driven Assessment of Cataloging and Metadata Services: Transforming Broken Links into Linked Data

Abstract

In response to the impact of emerging technologies, this article examines the relationship between strategic planning and the assessment methodologies of cataloging and metadata services and explores (or “suggests” if appropriate) how to assess cataloging and metadata activities more effectively and relevantly. Besides literature review, the author conducted surveys for more than seventy librarians and follow-up interviews with three library administrators. The results indicate the gap between strategic planning and assessment for cataloging and metadata services, and identify the significance of impact and users’ needs in strategic planning for the assessment of cataloging and metadata services. These elements are critical in transforming the broken links in the current cataloging assessment into a purpose-driven assessment corresponding to users’ needs and evolving technologies.     

Disciplinary Duality: The Contested Terrain of Book Studies

Book Studies is an emerging field, which encompasses Book History and Book Arts. Because of this duality it is not always clear whether it is a free-standing discipline or merely an interdisciplinary academic program. This article attempts to investigates its disciplinary identity through an in-depth analysis of Book Studies' history, discursive field, major stakeholders, and scholarly communications. In addition, the article identifies and explores a few major academic programs in Book Studies in the United States and abroad. Based on the evidence gathered from the syllabi of the academic programs and the scholarly communication of the participants, some of the implications of the article are: the discursive field of Book Studies is developing around two very different centers, Book History and Book Arts; Book Studies’ acquired dual disciplinary identity is not a “birth defect” but rather a goal of including sociocultural, historic and aesthetic aspects of the book. The potential future of Book Studies as a field is also discussed.     

Broken and Disordered: Selected Critical Readings on Broken Windows Policing

Broken windows policing came of age when one of the nation's largest and most high-profile police departments began to systematize the philosophy as part of order maintenance policing. This bibliography, comprised primarily of selected readings critical of the phenomenon, not only illustrates the depth and breadth of the criticism of specific order maintenance methods but questions much of the “proof” of their effectiveness. Book-ending the critiques are readings that articulate the founding “broken windows” theory, and cases that provide the legal framework for this particular intersection between social norms theory and law.     

Taking Shared Print to the Next Level: The Partnership for Shared Book Collections

Abstract

This article introduces the Partnership for Shared Book Collections, a federation of monograph shared print programs. Collaboration of programs at the network level allows for:

• Reducing the cost of retaining the scholarly record through shared distribution of commitments;

• De-duplicating efforts;

• Developing and promoting evidence-based best practices;

• Increasing the effectiveness of communication with end-users and funders;

• Tackling large-scale projects and research that are out of reach for individual shared print programs. This shared stewardship of collection is critical as local resources are depleted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and access to print for digitization increases.

     

The Long Horizon: The Shared Value of Museums

Abstract Probably as far back as we humans go, we have been dependent on cultural continuity. Essential parts of culture exist on multiple levels: individual, family, community, region, nation, and so on. It’s the sharing of critical elements across these levels that maintains a working society. The value of a geographical or physical space for culture‐keeping lies in those shared values, for which museums provide a living matrix.

Congressional Research Service Products: Purpose and Legislative Histories

Congressional Research Service (CRS) products, such as CRS Reports and Issue Briefs, are valuable reference tools that can assist reference professionals in providing service to a wide range of patrons and should not be overlooked. This article briefly explains how legislative reference bureaus came into existence and details the early legislative history of the formation of CRS, the federal legislative reference service. This article also explains what products CRS creates and for what purpose. Finally, this article provides a brief legislative history of modern congressional efforts to publicly disseminate CRS products, which includes summaries of public discourse on the subject.

章主要论述博物馆陈列展览题材选择与主题确定的重要性，认为选题关平陈列展览的定向，是陈列展览成功与否的第一关键。提出选题应遵循七条主要原则：与本馆的性质，任务相适应，以馆藏实物（化、标本）为基础；实事求是的科学性，满足社会需求，通俗性和普及化，创新的意识。强调在选题时，应对举办陈列展览的必要条件进行分析，并对选题进行充分的论证，以确保陈列展览的可行性，科学性和权威性，这也是办好陈列展览必不可少的重要环节。

作为中国科技馆常展更新改造项目之一,“守护地球家园”常设展览以建立正确的人地关系为核心确定展览主题,引导公众正确领会人与家园的关系,树立人与自然和谐发展的生态文明观,携手应对当前生态环境面临的挑战,呵护唯一家园。本文分析了确定该展览主题的思路,探讨并总结了围绕主题进行策展工作的思考与启示。     

Shared Entertainment,Shared Opinions: The Influence of Social TV Comments on the Evaluation of Talent Shows

The present research investigated whether co-viewer comments in social TV interactions are able to enhance or weaken media effects. With the example of talent shows, the valence of co-viewer comments (pro/contra/none) as well as the type of content (antisocial behavior vs. conventional performance) were varied in an experiment (N = 117). Results showed that participants’ own comments and their private attitudes about the judges varied in line with comment valence. Findings suggest that social TV viewers are prone to social influence of their co-viewers, which might amplify problems regarding the portrayal of antisocial behavior in reality TV.

Writing Radio History as it Happens: The Challenges and Opportunities of Collecting Podcast Histories

This essay reflects on the challenges and opportunities of researching and documenting contemporaneous digital radio histories. It discusses the implications of preservation-minded research into newly forming production cultures and practices around digital radio and podcasting. Moreover, this piece reflects on the current efforts being conducted to construct, document, and analyze new and emerging industrial and cultural formations within and around podcasting.
