Being a "Child Prodigy" Depends on Early Learning

People often gasp in admiration at the wonderful performances of little singers, calligraphers, or pianists of three or four or six or seven years of age, considering that they are rare, born "child prodigies." In fact, they are all "human children"; they only have a better learning environment when they are young, and they study rather early. If other normal children can have the same environment and chances for early learning, they all may have the same success; and if later on they continue to receive training and a good education, they can become talented persons early, achieve early, and make more contributions. At all times and in all countries, most people with outstanding achievements in sciences and the fine arts begin their studies very early. Bo Juyi (a poet, 771-846 A.D.) gave an account in his own words that he "knew words at half-a-year old and mastered tonal patterns and rhyme schemes at nine"; Li Bo (poet, 705 7-762 A.D.) could "read 'Six Jia'¹ at five and could observe a ‘Hundred Schools of Thought’² at ten"; Du Fu (poet, 712-770 A.D.)     

Putting Children at the Centre: Making policy as if children mattered

Abstract

What do we mean when we say we want to put children at the centre of policy? What are the moral justifications for this approach? Has it become harder for us to understand this concept, when in practice paid work has been at the centre? In part confusion arises because the unpaid work of caring for children is invisible until it is marketized. In turn, the underlying problem is that we have forgotten our traditions of egalitarianism and adopted a powerful mindset that is proving to be paralyzing. Exploring New Zealand family policies such as paid parental leave (PPL), early childhood education, child tax credits (CTC) suggests that there is much room for improvement if the needs of children are to come first. But first and foremost we must have a very different, child-centric, colour-blind, non-judgmental change of heart.

人们普遍认为天才儿童是儿童中的极少数，然而，根据国外最新研究成果表明，儿童在其早期就几经具备了一些超乎人们想象的认知行为和能力，这是对皮亚杰的儿童认知发展理论的又一有力挑战。根据这些新研究成果，我们认为天才儿童的培养不是不可能的，只要及时的、用科学的启发方式和培养手段，天才儿童的普遍塑造还是有可能的。

When We Inquire Into Our Own Practice: An Early Childhood Teacher Research Group

Every day, early childhood teachers confront issues, problems, and concerns in their classrooms. Sometimes they do nothing. Sometimes they use trial and error. Sometimes they go to a workshop or read an article. We have found a way to intentionally and systematically research and answer our own questions and to enrich our own professional development through teacher research. Teacher research provides early childhood educators with a strategy that supports reflective thinking and practice. This article describes the experience of a small group of early childhood teacher researchers. How is it different from other required assessments? How is it different from other professional development?

The role of practice in chess: A longitudinal study

We investigated the role of practice in the acquisition of chess expertise by submitting a questionnaire to 104 players of different skill levels. Players had to report their chess rating, the number of hours of individual and group practice, their use of different learning resources and activities, and whether they had been trained by a coach. The use of archival data enabled us to track the rating of some of the players throughout their career. We found that there was a strong correlation between chess skill and number of hours of practice. Moreover, group practice was a better predictor of high-level performance than individual practice. We also found that masters had a higher chess rating than expert players after only three years of serious dedication to chess, although there were no differences in the number of hours of practice. The difference that may explain the variation in rating is that masters start practising at an earlier age than experts. Finally, we found that activities such as reading books and using computer software (game databases, but not playing programs) were important for the development of high-level performance. Together with previous data and theories of expert performance, our results indicate limits in the deliberate practice framework and make suggestions on how best to carry out learning in chess and in other fields.

Student Teachers in Primary Schools: the views of mentors and headteachers

Four year initial teacher education courses have recently undergone radical reform, in particular in relation to the time that students spend in schools. Through the introduction of mentorship programmes, teachers have become very much more involved in training the students whilst they are in school. How do teachers view the changes that have been introduced? Do they agree with the principles and models that guided the developments? Headteachers and class teachers who acted as mentors for students from the University of Reading have supplied some answers. They are very committed to the model of student learning upon which the mentorship programme is built, the belief that schools and the university must work in partnership to implement and further develop the mentorship programme and the view that schools need to adopt a whole school approach to their involvement in initial teacher education. These findings indicate that the teachers agree with the underlying principles that guided the development of the mentorship programme in which they are involved and they are supportive of the resulting changes to school experience.
