Business students and faculty expect the electronic delivery of content within their multiple disciplinary subject areas. The speed of acceptance and the rate of migration from print to electronic sources within the various business disciplines outpaces the acceptance rates in the humanities and other social sciences. Business students and faculty exhibit information-seeking behaviors that are unique to the practice-oriented nature of a business education. Electronic resources re-enforce this information-seeking behavior. The technology utilized in the creation of e-books enables business students and faculty to successfully locate specific data, both textual and numeric within the resource, further reinforcing their behaviors and accelerating the demand for additional e-books. Business students and faculty use e-books as reference books.  相似文献

E-books are an important part of library collections. Allowing patrons to easily find e-books in a library’s online catalog requires properly cataloging these materials. Miao Jin, Catalog Librarian at Hinds Community College, gave a presentation titled “Cataloging e-Books: Dealing with Vendors and Various Other Problems” at the Mississippi State University Libraries’ eResource & Emerging Technologies Summit held in the Mitchell Memorial Library on August 2, 2013. Jin provided information on cataloging her library’s e-books and adding them to the library’s online catalog. She presented strategies for loading e-book machine-readable cataloging (MARC) records, and shared her experience working with vendors.  相似文献

Faculty at Southeastern University were required to take an information literacy course designed by the librarians. The author then interviewed faculty regarding their attitudes toward the course and information literacy. Librarians were especially interested in whether taking this course would change the faculty's approach to teaching information literacy in the classroom. Librarians evaluated the course and recommended future changes based on the results of these interviews.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

About twenty years ago, the Internet began to change the way people create, access, publish, and share information. The impact of this information revolution has been felt in every industry. For instance, the Internet has enabled new models in the publishing sector, which has subsequently impacted education and changed the landscape of teaching and learning. About a decade ago, the introduction of new buzzwords such as open access, electronic publishing, digital humanities, and digital scholarship continued to challenge the scholarly production and dissemination of knowledge. Undoubtedly, these changes also created new opportunities for collaboration among multidisciplinary groups including researchers, scholars, students, technologists, librarians, and others. In this article, the author discusses four successful faculty-driven digital scholarship projects that his library system has supported in the last two years. His team's work serves as an example of how academic libraries and centers for digital scholarship at undergraduate institutions can support digital humanities and digital scholarship initiatives. Additionally, the case examples can contribute to the ongoing discussion of new roles for librarians and technologists in working with scholars and students to gain the skills necessary to implement digital scholarship projects.  相似文献

After boxes of uncataloged microforms were discovered at my library, we learned that many of the titles were available as free electronic books, so I added bibliographic records to the local catalog for the e-versions. Some bibliographic records existed in OCLC WorldCat for the electronic versions, but they were not always provider-neutral. I learned how to create the new provider-neutral record and want to share my experience. Other librarians may want to replicate my project at their institutions, weeding their microforms and supplanting those records with e-book bibliographic records, thereby providing instant online access to these resources for their patrons.  相似文献

When the National Academies Press announced that more than 4,000 electronic books would be made freely available for download, many academic libraries expressed interest in obtaining MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) records for them. Using cataloging e-mail distribution lists, volunteers were recruited for a project to identify and upgrade bibliographic records for aggregation into a batch that could be easily loaded into catalogs. Project organization, documentation, quality control measures, and problems are described, as well as processes for adding new titles. The project's implications for future efforts are assessed, as are the numerous challenges for network-level cataloging.  相似文献

During the fall of 2008, the librarians at Rodgers Library and the Associate Dean for Collections examined circulation statistics for print materials published in the past five years. At the same time, they were examining use of electronic resources in science and engineering. The difference in use was staggering. While the use of electronic resources continues to rise, the circulation of print materials falls. Statistics showed that only one third of the print materials ordered over the past five years have circulated, many only one time. Based on this information, the authors began discussing alternatives. While e-books will constitute a possible substitute for print books, they know that the two formats are complementary and will continue to maintain a balance in their collection. E-book acquisitions continue to evolve as new options become available.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Building a library’s collection requires more than collecting print materials and shelving them in the stacks. The growth of e-books and e-serials over the past decade has been phenomenal. Given the scope of its collection building, the Library of Congress (LOC) has been required to actively pursue the acquisition and management of e-books and e-serials in its permanent collection. This article surveys how the LOC has taken advantage of existing structures and how it has pursued new paths to succeed in this undertaking. Finally, it lays out some of the outstanding problems that the LOC faces as it attempts to build a digital equivalent to its print collection.  相似文献

Although e-books date back to the 1970s, the peak of academic adoption was in the early to mid-2000s. At the beginning of the 2012/2013 academic year, the Franklin & Marshall (F&M) College Library had roughly 500,000 print volumes cataloged and only 12 e-books. By the end of that year, the catalog contained approximately 120,000 e-books. In February 2014, the F&M College Library conducted a campus-wide survey about e-books. By comparing these results with F&M’s usage statistics, the Library found practical suggestions on how to improve current acceptance and usage of e-books.  相似文献

The authors discuss declining usage of print collections in business disciplines and describe a survey of business faculty conducted in fall 2009. Results indicate a preference for print books but a willingness to substitute e-books. This study explores new faculty members' and librarians' perceptions of a program that provides each new faculty member with funds to purchase materials supporting their teaching and scholarship. The article describes the results of a survey of perceptions of the faculty and librarians who have participated in the program at Illinois State University. The findings suggest that the program has not been successful as a recruitment tool but has been very valuable for establishing early and strong subject liaison relationships with new faculty members.  相似文献

As the number of adjunct faculty in academia grows, libraries must be increasingly cognizant of their important role. Adjuncts often teach a large number of first-year students, and, as a result, they can have a significant impact on whether or not students persist in their education. Working with adjunct faculty presents unique challenges to libraries. Discovering who adjunct faculty are and understanding their working conditions are a first step in building awareness of this population. This article examines the wide spectrum of adjunct faculty and provides suggestions to encourage libraries to broaden their services to meet the needs of all faculty.  相似文献

The authors surveyed college and university faculty members in the field of professional education to gauge their perceptions pertaining to the impact of library services on their research. The purpose was to illuminate faculty perceptions in a postsecondary education environment that emphasizes research productivity and requires libraries to provide ever more compelling evidence of their institutional value. Survey results showed that faculty members continue to rely on traditional discovery and collections-based library services, but that additional support for grant activity, data management, intellectual property management, and bibliometric analysis is needed. Implications for transforming library research support are discussed, and areas for further study are proposed.  相似文献

Abstract

Teaching faculty are a key resource for reference librarians. This paper includes a discussion of major forces affecting reference service as well as suggestions on ways for librarians to become better acquainted with teaching faculty. One benefit of making these connections is that when faculty know and have confidence in librarians, they are more likely to urge their students to get help at the desk, to schedule course-related instruction sessions, and to let librarians know if they have a particularly difficult or complex assignment. Another benefit is that such connections often lead to increased opportunities, from participation in campus-wide initiatives to the development of collaborative projects and other scholarly work. As a librarian relatively new to the profession, I know that such connections with teaching faculty have enriched my own career.  相似文献

Law faculty in the 21st century present new challenges for law librarians. Traditional services such as document delivery and interlibrary loan are improved. [目的/意义]数据是数字人文研究的基础和核心之一,图书馆人文数据组织与重构不但能提高数字资源的利用率,而且能拓展图书馆人文数据服务,可极大地促进数字人文科学的发展,也是图书馆知识型专业服务的具体体现,有利于提供更高层次领域的服务。[方法/过程]分析数字人文研究中的人文数据特点及人文学者研究对人文数据的需求,认为图书馆需从人文数据的完整性、可计算性、可用性及重用性、可发现以及获得性等角度出发进行人文数据组织与重构。[结果/结论]要克服人文数据碎片化带来的零散、不系统的弊病,必须采用数据复原与重构的方式恢复或重建人文数据所蕴含的知识之间的联系,采用数据化、数据融合、数据关联及发布等手段,最终实现知识单元的精细粒度化、知识组织的语义化、知识呈现的可视化。  相似文献

高校数字人文中心是为推进人文社会学科与信息技术学科的深度融合而建立的协同创新服务与管理机构,其主要职能是为数字人文项目提供全生命周期技术和管理保障。当前数字人文理念还没有被我国学术界所广泛接受,高校数字人文中心建设还处于起步和探索阶段,应该采取多种措施,促进数字人文领域基础问题的研究,制定高校数字人文中心建设规范,发挥高校数字人文中心在学科融合与协同创新中的推动作用。  相似文献

Numerous surveys over the years have found that faculty value librarians more for their reference work, often described as “service,” than for their contributions to teaching; that 55–85 percent of faculty report using no LI with their classes; and that faculty have various reasons for not using librarian-provided instruction. This study differs from its predecessors by focusing specifically upon faculty who use LI heavily with their courses and interviewing them about why they use LI and what they value about it. Understanding these faculty members' values regarding LI, as expressed in their own words, can assist librarians in promoting course-integrated instruction.  相似文献

文章聚焦文化遗产主题,利用内容分析法分析国外文化遗产的数字人文项目,归纳提炼了项目的立项依据、项目驱动、项目要素、项目成果和重点环节,分析其运行规律与特性,总结优秀经验并得出对我国文化遗产的数字人文研究的启示。研究认为,我国开展文化遗产的数字人文研究时,应当树立可持续发展理念,推动商业机构参与文化遗产的数字人文研究,深入探索众包发展以及明确LAM机构在项目中的定位。  相似文献
