Decolonising and globalising English studies: The case of English textbooks in West-Bengal, India

The paper examines the changing status of English studies through English textbooks in contemporary West-Bengal, India. The texts are marked by the cross-currents of the post-colonial impulse to discard the English literary canon, the acceptance of the historical role of English literature in the Bengal Renaissance, and the new demand for English language proficiency in a globalising India.

日本右翼势力利用修改其历史教科书,企图达到淡化、否认其侵略亚洲邻国的目的,以此培养日本极端民族主义并试探中国及周边国家的反应,企图重新塑造其军事大国地位。对这种危险的挑衅行为和复苏军国主义的倾向,我们应当坚决加以谴责、驳斥,但更应该加紧自己的建设,用更加强大的实力痛击日本右翼势力,保卫国家的安全与和平。     

Exploring the use of Technology textbooks in medium- and well-resourced school contexts in South Africa

Abstract

This study explored how Technology teachers in medium- and well-resourced schools use commercially prepared textbooks in their classrooms. A qualitative-interpretive design was used with a purposively selected sample of four schools from a city in the Gauteng province, South Africa. Data were analysed according to the conceptual framework of didactical transposition, focusing on textbook content, activities, context and teaching strategies. It was found that teachers in well-resourced schools adapt textbooks by adding content, thus expecting a higher standard from textbook content, and preferring learners to work individually, while teachers in medium-resourced schools follow textbooks without adapting them, therefore accepting the standard set by the textbooks. It is recommended that teachers in both contexts be assisted by specialists to interpret the curriculum so as to be sure how they are expected to use textbooks to improve their classroom practices.     

Education and religion in Iran: The inclusiveness of EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks

The focus of this paper is religion and education with particular reference to EFL (English as a Foreign Language) textbooks. The writers of this paper aim to raise the awareness of research community, educators, and teachers regarding the interconnectedness of religion and education. In the first phase of the study, the researchers scanned a series of secondary-level Iranian EFL textbooks prescribed by the Iranian Ministry of Education to determine religious concepts in the form of linear and/or non linear content. The next phase of research was the analysis of the content to determine the level of inclusiveness of the textbooks in terms of culture and religion. These textbooks were also analyzed to determine whether the propagation of religious content was overt or covert. Finally the impact of religious content in textbooks was discussed with reference to identity and nation building.     

中国教科书审定制之嚆矢——试析晚清学部第一次审定初等小学教科书

1906年,中国历史上第一次审定初等小学教科书的活动正式实施,并产生了重大影响,显示了清朝统治集团被时代潮流裹胁,向着现代教育制度迈进了一大步.晚清学部第一次根据国家统一的教育宗旨、学制课标准,统一制定初等小学教科书审定之标准、审定之项目、审定之时间范围、审定之科目数量及具体书名,旨在求得学校教学用书、教学内容上的统一,一定程度上对全国的新式教科书起到榜样与督促作用.

分析了我国现行高等职业教育教材存在的主要问题,探讨了引进和选用国外优质高等职业教育教材的作用、基本原则,提出了引进和选用国外优质高等职业教育教材应采取的对策。     

美国博士教育的现状与问题

美国的博士教育规模庞大,修业年限在3～9年之间。博士教育模式主要由课程学习、资格考试以及学位论文工作等三部分构成。论文是博士教育计划的核心要素,博士论文要求进行创造性研究,对相应的学科有独特的贡献。博士教育评估由研究型博士学位教育研究委员会组织,由全国研究委员会管理。博士教育资助的渠道包括各州政府、联邦政府、学生学费、大学的捐赠基金、慈善基金会和产业界。美国博士教育的国际化程度很高,国际生是博士生队伍的重要组成部分。尽管美国博士教育是成功的且富有创造力,但也面临艰巨的挑战,主要表现为研究资助越来越影响到博士教育,专业化教育导致博士素质的偏狭与局限,博士教育脱离了变化不定的工作市场的要求,完成学业时间的延长致使博士生求学的积极性降低,以及精英人才短缺等。

以美国伊里诺州TRITON学院为例，通过对学位及证书教育、大学预科教育、职业教育等的教学计划和教学方式的论述和分析，说明了美国是如何开办社区大学的，这对我国将要建立社区大学的计划具有参考意义。

The inclusion of STS material in the most frequently used secondary science textbooks in the U.S.

Science-technology-society (STS) has been identified by the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Departments of Education in a variety of states, and a variety of commissions and panels concerned with reform in science education as a new direction and goal for science education. Because most teachers are dependent upon textbooks for determining their curricula and teaching approaches, an investigation of 11 of the most frequently used secondary science textbooks in the U.S. were reviewed to determine the attention given to STS topics. The framework established by the Project Synthesis research team for STS was used to define STS topics. The 11 textbooks were examined in their entirety to determine space devoted to STS. Minimum interrater reliability was established at 0.80; any deviation resulted in further analysis. Comparisons were made of STS coverage by science disciplines and across the 7-12 grade levels. Results revealed that less than 7% of the narrative space is devoted to STS topics, with a range of 11.5% to 0.5%. Further, the coverage of STS topics decreases as grade level increases. A great discrepancy, therefore, exists between goals for science education (an STS emphasis) to actual coverage in the most frequently used textbooks.

Re-visiting Hiroshima: The Role of us and japanese history textbooks in the construction of national memory

This paper originates from the perspective that school textbooks are crucial organs in the process of constructing legitimated ideologies and beliefs and are a reflection of the values considered important by powerful groups in society. This claim is explored through investigating the manner in which a selection of history textbooks in use in US and Japanese schools invites students to understand the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima. Linking narrative with historical analysis, the paper presents evidence which suggests that US and Japanese children are provided with a narrow view of the past which in promoting asense of unity and patriotism limits the development of a critical historical consciousness.
