Hawthorne was a great writer who reminds us of human limitations. He called his tales "allegories of the heart." Hawthorne’s allegories are stories of how pride and isolation frustrate our capacity for love and sympathy.Isolation or "alienation" is Hawthorne’s principal theme and problem, and loss of contact with reality is the ultimate penalty he envisions. Therefore, reading Hawthorne’s stories is a journey to explore human being’s evil.  相似文献

Herman Nothrop Frye was a famous Canadian literary critic and theorist. According to him, symbol was :"Any unit of any literary structure that can be isolated for critical attention." He partitioned literary symbolism into five levels or phases. Each phase independently possessed its own mythos, ethos, and dianoia. These phases were: Symbol as motif; Symbol as sign; Symbol as image; Symbol as archetype and symbol as monad. This paper tries to apply his theories of symbolism to the comment of Young Goodman Brown, one of the best short stories written by the American romantic writer Nathaniel Hawthorne.  相似文献

Under the instruction of the author's own confession in the preface of The House of the Seven Gables, it's easy for readers and critics to take the theme of this novel as past and present, stasis and change, aristocracy and democracy, and then to unfavor?ably judge Pycheon siblings, the representatives of the former, by Holgrave, that of the latter. However, by using two narrative voic?es simultaneously in the novel, an intradiegeitic one and an extradeigetic one, Hawthorne actually reveals his equal disapproval of both the Pycheon siblings and Holgrave. In the intradiegetic narrative, the narrative voice as a whole takes its side with Holgrave and reveals Pycheon siblings'isolation from the united struggle of mankind. In the extradiegetic narrative where the narrator ad?dresses directly to his readers, the narrator expresses a similar disapproval of Holgrave, who is equally isolated from the chain of hu?manity for lacking sympathy for his fellow beings. With the co-existence of two narrative voices, Hawthorne's true concern lies in calling attention to the equally dangerous situations of isolation from the chain of humanity:an isolation from the chain of progress and that of human sympathy.  相似文献

Edmund Husserl’s first important move about phenomenology is the“phenomenological reduction”which means that we should reduce the external world to the contents of our consciousness alone. However, Hans-Georg Gadamer holds the opinion that all interpretation of a past work consists in a dialogue between past and present(Eagleton, T. 2009:62). Gadamer’s famous theory is fusion of horizons which means that the event of understanding comes about when our own“horizon”of historical meanings and assumptions“fuses”with the“horizon”within which the work itself is placed. The present thesis takes Hawthorne’s YoungGoodmanBrown as an example to illustrate different understandings when readers apply the two different theories.  相似文献
