CAS Scientist Awarded Tyler Prize for Environment Achievement

Prof. Liu Dongsheng (Tungsheng Liu), a CAS member and professor at CAS Institute of Geology and Geophysics, has been awarded the 2002 Tyler Prize for Environment Achievement. He shared a cash prize of $200,000 with the other laureate, Dr. Wallace S. Broecker from Columbia University, the US, and received a gold Tyler Prize medallion on April 12.     

Save Traditional Culture Save Biodiversity——An interview with PEI Shengji

In the forests of Xishuangbanna, southwest China and the mountainous areas of Southwest Asia, Prof. Pei Shengji, a senior researcher with the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Garden and the CAS Kunming Institute of Botany, has been carrying out botanic studies that are closely related to the traditional cultures of ethnic minorities for over three decades. By learning from local people, he helped the government to protect large areas of forests and mountains. In a recent interview with XIN Ling, a staff reporter of BCAS, the professor called for saving indigenous knowledge and traditional culture for biodiversity conservation.     

CAS Physicist Receives Achievement in Asia Award

Wang Enge (Enge WANG),a research professor atthe CAS Institute ofPhysics, has been honored with2002 2003 Achievement in AsiaAward (AAA) of the OverseasChinese Physics Association(OCPA).This was announced by OCPAawarding committee chair Cheuk-Yin Ng, professor of University ofCalifornia, on June 23. Leading Botanist Receives Honorary Title

Dr. Peter H. Raven, a leading botanist and director of the Missouri Botanical Garden, received an honorary title of research professor at the CAS Wuhan Botanical Garden on Sept. 20.     

Newly Appoited CAS Leaders

Dr. Cao Jianlin, a research professor, is a vice president of CAS. Concurrently, he serves as president of the CAS-affiliated Academy of Opto-electronics (AOE) and director of the State Key Laboratory for Applied Optics (LAO).     

CAS issues its 2007 prizes for outstanding achievements

One individual and three research groups have been honored with the prestigious CAS Awards for Outstanding S＆T Achievements in 2007.CAS President LU Yongxiang conferred the awards on the laureates at the Academy＇s annual work conference opened on 24 March in Beijing.

Key Laboratorles at CAS

CAS launched a plan to develop key laboratories in 1984. By now, it is home to one State laboratory, 55 State key laboratories (including laboratories under the joint sponsorship of CAS and Ministry of Education) and CAS key laboratories. Besides, the preparatory work for establishing three new State laboratories is under way.     

The 11th CAS General Assembly Held in Beijing

As their first plenary meetings in the new century, the 11th General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Sixth General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were convened in Beijing from May 28 to June 1. A total of 490 CAS members and three foreign members attended the CAS conference.     

CAS forum for young scientists held in Yunnan

Co-organized by the CAS Graduate University （GUCAS） and the CAS Kunming Branch, 2007 Sciencel00, a CAS annual forum for outstanding young scientists, was opened on 28 November, 2007 at the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden （XTBG）, with an attendance of more than 90 experts and scholars from various CAS affiliates.

文章简要介绍了中科院学部60年的历史,将其划分为4个时期,继而阐述了学部作为中科院最高决策机构和学部转变为最高咨询机构的前因后果。最后就学部的发展改革提出了两点浅见,即一方面学部要进一步完善组织架构,提升学术职能,另一方面要充分发挥学部在我国科学共同体建设中的作用。

CAS issues its 2008 Science ＆ Society Series

CAS recently released its 2008 Science and Society Series consisting of three reports on scientific progress, high-tech advancement and sustainable development. Among them, the latter two were completed under the organization of the CAS Institute of Policy a~d Management. Copies of the Series were sent to deputies and members of the National People＇s Congress and the Chinese People＇s Political Consultative Conference in session.

The Endemic Genera of SeedPlants of ChinaThe Endemic Genera of SeedPlants of China is a monographcompiled and written by a group ofresearchers headed by Prof. YingJunsheng (Tsun-shen Ying) of theCAS Institute of Botany. CAS announces new academicians

Twenty-nine prominent Chinese scientists have been elected as CAS Members and five of their colleagues from US, France and Russia as CAS Foreign Members in 2007. The announcement was made by CAS Vice President LI Jinghai at a press conference held on 27 December, 2007 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the meeting.     

关于技术转移的战术思考

文章分析了影响我国技术转移事业健康发展的主要因素,对中科院北京分院及其所属部分单位在技术转移工作中的有益尝试进行了简要分析,提出了技术转移既是一项事业又是一门专业,应将其做为中科院科技事业发展格局的"中游"战略。文章结合中科院实际,在战术层面分别从院部机关、分院、研究所三个层次提出了加强技术转移工作的建议。     

CAS Invites International Panel to Evaluate Its Institute

At the invitation of the CAS, a group of eight international experts convened in Nanjing on October 7th and 8th to evaluate the CAS Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (NIGPAS). This is the first move of its kind ever made by CAS at the academy level. Earlier this year several CAS institutes had made similar assessments by themselves.     

To serve and promote science development via innovation

CAS should stick to the principle of rendering service to, and giving impetus for, the development of China＇s science enterprise by making S＆T innovations, said CAS President LU Yongxiang. The CAS president made the remarks in a recent talk to communicate the gist of the winter session of the Party＇s Leading-member Group at CAS, which was held from 7 to 11 January in Beijing.
