留守,实为历代帝王出巡、出征时以亲王或重臣镇守京师,得以便宜行事而设置的一种职位。后来也有在行部、陪都等设置留守的,目的类似于京师。在北宋王朝,大名之所以设置留守,且以王室心腹任此要职,并不是因为大名是北宋王朝的陪都,主要是因为它是防辽南侵的重镇。
