Employment During High School and Student Achievement: Longitudinal Analysis of National Data

Abstract

The relationship between employment and academic performance in a nationally representative sample of U.S. students was examined in a longitudinal study as the students progressed from Grade 8 to 12. The participants (N = 15,552) took part in the base year (1988), first follow-up (1990), and second follow-up (1992) of the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS). Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the NELS data set while controlling for the effects of family background, previous achievement, gender, and ethnicity. Employment had an overall negative and curvilinear effect on high school GPA. Students who worked fewer than 12 hr per week fared better academically than those students who were not employed. A significant decline in academic performance was observed when students worked more than 11–13 hr per week.

大理洱源县当代小学民族特色教育现状调查——以洱源县凤羽镇中和村为例

本文在对相关资料进行收集,对学校领导、家长和小学生的深入访谈基础上,从学校教育与家庭教育两个角度对该地区民族特色教育进行了解读。最后结语部分得出结论,即大理洱源县当代小学民族特色教育已经渐渐减少,而民族特色教育形式还有保留。

Analyzing Longitudinal Data Using Natural Cubic Smoothing Splines

The analysis of longitudinal data has received widespread interest in the behavioral, educational, medical, and social sciences for many years. Many modeling techniques have been suggested for conducting such analyses, especially when the data exhibit complex nonlinear trajectory patterns. A major problem with many of these modeling techniques, however, is that they often either impose overly restrictive assumptions or can be computationally demanding. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a less known but highly effective modeling procedure that can be used to model complex nonlinear longitudinal data patterns. The procedure is illustrated using empirical data along with an easy to use computerized implementation.

Identifying a School Counseling Research Agenda: A Delphi Study

The authors conducted a Delphi study to identify important research questions regarding school counseling. During 3 consecutive rounds of e‐mail queries, an expert panel of 21 school counseling educators and practitioners were asked to identify the goals of school counseling research, develop specific research questions, and rate the importance of the questions. The highest rated research questions concerned school counseling interventions that have an impact on academic achievement and the effects of school counseling programs on student outcomes. The panel's final list of 42 research questions can help counselor educators, graduate students, and practitioners develop research projects that most effectively meet the needs of the field.     

Updating the School Counseling Research Agenda: A Delphi Study

The authors updated an earlier Delphi study identifying the research priorities for school counseling (Dimmitt et al., 2005 ). A 29‐member expert panel selected research questions from the prior study, generated new questions, and rank ordered the combined set. The results provide guidance for prioritizing dissertation topics, targeting future research, and focusing the scholarly efforts of counselor educators.     

Classifying Data Sets Using Support Vector Machines Based on Geometric Distance

Support vector machines (SVMs) are not as favored for large-scale data mining as for pattern recognition and machine learning because the training complexity of SVMs is highly dependent on the size of data set. This paper presents a geometric distance-based SVM (GDB-SVM). It takes the distance between a point and classified hyperplane as classification rule, and is designed on the basis of theoretical analysis and geometric intuition. Experimental code is derived from LibSVM with Microsoft Visual C 6.0 as system of translating and editing. Four predicted results of five of GDB-SVM are better than those of the method of one against all (OAA). Three predicted results of five of GDB-SVM are better than those of the method of one against one (OAO). Experiments on real data sets show that GDB-SVM is not only superior to the methods of OAA and OAO, but highly scalable for large data sets while generating high classification accuracy.
