A Comparative Stylistic Analysis of King and Obama's Nobel Peace Prize Acceptance Speech

Public address is one of the study fields in the research of stylistics. For those public addresses made by most internationally influential characters, most of the public addresses are regarded as the literature classics and optimal resources for English learners as well. Acceptance speech, as one branch of public addresses, is much more representative and referential in some specified areas such as academics, entertainment, economy, society and so on. This paper will conduct a brief comparative analysis based on the acceptance speech made by Martin Luther King in 1964 and Barack Obama, the 44th president of United States, after their winning the Nobel Peace Prize by revealing their stylistic features in order to evoke the readers their more appreciations about the art of public address.     

On the Tone of Finality in Famous Successful Speeches

The public speech skill consists of cultural virtue,knowledge accumulation,psychological quality,logical thinking,thinking capacity and language expression.It is a kind of art that speakers achieve the success through their own sound.In dealing with various English speeches,Chinese students are always influenced by the Chinese way of speech delivery,adopting the style of it,especially its tone of finality.After collecting,arranging and learning relevant material,I attaches great importance to the tone of finality in famous English speeches.They show some rules and regulations,such as the return to the middle pitch,the unstable change of stress and the final rising and falling tone.This paper begins with a brief introduction to what the tone of finality is and three famous English speeches in different areas are provided as study cases with the PRAAT pictures and their relevant analysis.And then the comparison will be made among these three speeches from aspects of pitch,length and weight,in the hope of concluding similarities in the tone of finality of these three cases.     

Discourse Analysis of Political Speeches from the Perspective of Functional Linguistics

Language is the primary tool of human communication,speech is the collective reflection of language art,and dis course analysis is a means to appreciate the language arts.This paper analyzes the entire discourse of Chinese political leader’s speech at Cambridge University from different aspects by using discourse analysis tools,to show the beauty of words and the force of language.

On Jane Austin’s Ironic and Dramatic Effect of Narrative and Dialogues——Based on Stylistic Analyses of Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austin,a renowned British novelist,is a great master of language.She is skilled in depicting ironic,dramatic effect of narrative and dialogues.Pride and Prejudice is her masterpiece,whose unique artistic characteristics with dramatic effect attract generations of readers.To explore Austin’s dramatic effect and to further appreciate her amazing writing techniques,this paper conducts stylistic analyses of Pride and Prejudice.Firstly,Austin’s narrative techniques are explored stylistically from syntactic structure and schema refreshment perspective.Secondly,the dramatic dialogues between Bennet couple are analyzed from speech presentation and cooperative principles.     

A Comparative Study of Metonymy and Synecdoche

Among the modern rhetorical devices,metonymy and synecdoche are two important figures of speech,which are analogous to each other for both use the name of one thing for that of something else.That is to say,both of the rhetorical devices involve substitution.Thus the two concepts are confusing.Metonymy emphasizes on using the name of one thing for that of something else with which it is associated.Synecdoche is a figure of speech in which a part is used for a whole,an individual for a class,a material for a thing,or the reverse of any of these.By making a comparative study of these two through the connotation and category,the author summarizes that:they are two independent figures of speech.     

Cross-Cultural Comparison: Aesthetic Appreciation of Palace Art in the Mid-Qing Dynasty and French“Rococo”Art

In the cross-cultural context,as artistic and cultural phenomena between the East and the West,the palace art in the mid-Qing Dynasty and the French“Rococo”art is bound to be influenced by the social history,artistic and cultural environment in which they live.Through a parallel comparison of the aesthetics of court art in the mid-Qing Dynasty and French Rococo art,it is found that there are similarities in the social and cultural environments and the aesthetic tastes of the aesthetic subject at that time,and there are differences in the presentation of the function of art culture and the aesthetic style of the aesthetic subject.At the same time,there is a phenomenon of the east-west integration of“western law for use”and“eastern elements”.     

Speaker adapted dynamic lexicons containing phonetic deviations of words

Speaker variability is an important source of speech variations which makes continuous speech recognition a difficult task. Adapting automatic speech recognition （ASR） models to the speaker variations is a well-known strategy to cope with the challenge, Almost all such techniques focus on developing adaptation solutions within the acoustic models of the ASR systems. Although variations of the acoustic features constitute an important portion of the inter-speaker variations, they do not cover variations at the phonetic level. Phonetic variations are known to form an important part of variations which are influenced by both micro-segmental and suprasegmental factors. Inter-speaker phonetic variations are influenced by the structure and anatomy of a speaker＇s articulatory system and also his/her speaking style which is driven by many speaker background characteristics such as accent, gender, age, socioeconomic and educational class. The effect of inter-speaker variations in the feature space may cause explicit phone recognition errors. These errors can be compensated later by having appropriate pronunciation variants for the lexicon entries which consider likely phone misclassifications besides pronunciation. In this paper, we introduce speaker adaptive dynamic pronunciation models, which generate different lexicons for various speaker clusters and different ranges of speech rate. The models are hybrids of speaker adapted contextual rules and dynamic generalized decision trees, which take into account word phonological structures, rate of speech, unigram probabilities and stress to generate pronunciation variants of words. Employing the set of speaker adapted dynamic lexicons in a Farsi （Persian） continuous speech recognition task results in word error rate reductions of as much as 10.1% in a speaker-dependent scenario and 7.4% in a speaker-independent scenario.     

Feature Mapping and Recuperation by Using Elliptical Basis Function Networks for Robust Speaker Verification

The performance of speaker verification systems is often compromised under real-world environments.For example,variations in handset characteristics could cause severe performance degradation.This paper presents a novel method to overcome this problem by using a non-linear handset mapper.Under this method,a mapper is constructed by training an elliptical basis function network using distorted speech features as inputs and the corresponding clean features as the desired outputs.During feature recuperation,clean features are recovered by feeding the distorted features to the feature mapper.The recovered features are then presented to a speaker model as if they were derived from clean speech.Experimental evaluation based on 258 speakers of the TIMIT and NTIMIT corpuses suggest that the feature mappers improve the verification performance remarkably.     

Outline and Discussion of Patronising Acting as a Communicative Function

People always find themselves in a rather difficult situation when communicating with others. Quite often a seemingly good intention and caring manner in one’s communication with others cannot guarantee the speaker that initiates the speech is rated as respectful and the communication as satisfying, let alone controlling and arrogant-like speech in a conversation. Patronising communication usually makes people fall into such a dilemma that they find it hard to carry out a successful interaction with other people. Researches in this aspect have been lauched to account for people’s mental states during patronising communication, and Communication Accomodation Theory (CAT) are found to be the best to explain the situation. It is suggested that sensibility, consciousness together with empathy from the speaker and positive reactions such as humorous responses from the listener are the desirable skills in improving the quality of patronising communication.     

Museum without walls： Imagining new formative spaces

The ＂Museum of Childhood＂ is a project connected to the Post-Graduate Program in Education at Unesc （Brazil） and since 2005 has been developing interfaces with research, teaching and extension. In this paper, the authors would like to show how the museological conception of the Museum of Childhood makes imagination from one of the central axis of its formative relation with the public. Such conception breaks with the traditional view of museums as buildings where old things are collected and preserved. In fact, the Museum of Childhood, in the light of its objective conditions, wants to be a museum without walls, a museum that, using the device of spatial demarcation, spreads itself in the university campus and other public places, with the objective of communicating with the people. This conception comes closer to the transgressive nature of modem arts, which desacralizes the work of art as masterpiece and proposed, for example, the fugacity of installations and aesthetic interventions. This conception takes the Benjaminian notion of the past as the dimension where other futures remain latent, that is, the museum is seen not as a guardian of the past, but as an establishment that wants to use its collections to communicate with the public. The overrunning of the static physical space, for example, forces the public to recreate its horizon of expectations concerning what a museum show be. In order to accomplish its original objectives, the Museum of Childhood works intensively on the formation of the public by proposing monitored visits in which creative activities are developed and by improving its homepage.

Sustainable school projects as the education tool for delivering sustainability

In the past ten years, many exemplar projects are completed in China to encourage the sharing of knowledge and experience of sustainability. Many of these projects are landmark buildings, and because they can attract more public attentions, they raise more awareness of sustainable development. However, school projects are rarely mentioned in the news and annual inspirational project lists. The fundamental point of this paper is to challenge the common concept in China that school buildings are only used exclusively by children in formal education. According to the paper’s review of the school schemes in England and Wales, not only the inspirational sustainable schools created the opportunities and responsibilities to accelerate positive changes, but also they developed a vision of an asset that supports lifelong learning and sustainable lifestyles for the whole community. In this paper, the definition of a ‘sustainable school’ is summarised by comparing the statements and concepts in England and Wales. Moreover, a wide range of benefits gained by project stakeholders and communities are also demonstrated through case studies. In the end, lessons and innovations which can be learnt by Chinese school projects are concluded. The illustrations provided by this paper do not aim to solve all issues of promoting a sustainable school in China, but to open people’s minds to the impacts of their actions, and to build the knowledge and cooperative framework to promote public sustainable projects.     

Investigating Pragmatics of Complaint Speech Acts in English and Chinese

The speech act of complaint is an important research subject of pragmatics,which is worthy of research among speech acts.With the development of research into speech acts,some scholars have performed investigations of complaints,but they have done little work on Chinese language complaints.Therefore,it is necessary to make a further study on complaint as a speech act in Chinese.This thesis is based on speech act theory and the politeness principle as an empirical study of the speech act of com plaint in Chinese.It aims to provide a more complete and comprehensive result of participant production of the speech act of complaint.     

An evaluation system for suitability of urban public rental housing construction in Chongqing

A social problem that low-income people are unable to purchase houses in urban areas has been focused in recent years and the housing security system has also become an important part of the social security system. In recent years, public rental houses appeared as a new type of affordable houses. The national government took the construction of public rental houses to the national strategic level. Currently, there are many problems in the public rental house construction. For example, policy mechanisms are inadequate, the use of funding is not in an efficient way, the location of public rental houses is far away from the downtown, the plot ratio is too high, and facilities are incomplete. There are no appropriate indicators to comprehensively evaluate the public rental house construction. Based on the livable evaluation system in Chongqing, we selected four aspects of relevant indicators as the economic suitability, environmental suitability, social suitability, and life suitability to establish the public rental house construction suitability evaluation system.
