The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy, which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel. In this essay, the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.  相似文献

This paper introduces Kim’s integrative theory of communication and cross-cultural adaptation. Building on a broad range of existing concepts, models, and research data across disciplines, Kim’s theory addresses two central questions: (a) What is the essential nature of the adaptation process? and (b) why are some strangers more successful than others in the adaptation process? The first question is addressed in the form of a process model. The second question is addressed in the form of a structural model. It is by far the most broad-based theoretical account of cross-cultural adaptation.  相似文献

In the modern era, the Jewish-Americans were faced with challenges because of the assimilation and modernity environment in the US, and as a result, many of them were in a double bind—to be an assimilated American citizen or to be a traditional Jew. With his work"The Imported Bridegroom", Abraham Cahan contemplated on the subject of Jewish immigration and assimilation and he made a ground-breaking contribution to the establishment of American modernity. This paper intends to analyze Cahan’s attitudes towards assimilation and modernity and how he builds up modernity for all of the Americans. Three characters in"The Imported Bridegroom", who stand for three prototypes of modern Jewish-Americans confronting the overwhelming flood of assimilation and the duty for retaining their traditions, will be analyzed. Through the composition of this work, Cahan tried to spread the Jewish culture on the one hand, and on the other, he warned the peripheral that it was difficult to be assimilated without disasters even if they had made contribution to the formation of modernity.  相似文献

This paper explores Laura’s inner world, applying Freud’s theory of the unconscious and the structure of the mind,Jung’s idea of archetypes, and Lacan’s concepts of the three orders. The story in The Garden Party depicts, in the movement toward adulthood, how Laura feels, thinks and acts under the drive of the id, and the adjustment of the ego and the superego. Laura’s psychological development indicates Laura has a healthy personality. She can confront her imperfection in her growth.  相似文献

The Holy Bible,as one of major sources of Western Culture, has a great influence on the Christian culture and Christian thoughts.Because language is a carrier of culture, the English study will be water without a source and a tree without roots if we ignore The Holy Bible which is the core of Christianity. To study English demands not only grammar and vocabulary, but also the culture behind the language.A brief analysis of connotative meanings of color terms, which are influenced by The Holy Bible and applied in literatures, will be given,in order to offer some help to English learners to know the connotations of color terms better,to understand literatures more profoundly and to have a general feeling about the impact which The Holy Bible has on language.  相似文献

Structuralism provides people with an effective solution in their constant quest of meaning.Readers and literary writers as well may make meaning out of a literary text with the concept of binary opposition, such as"fact/fiction".The author analyses the novel and points out that the"fact/fiction"opposition existing in the main characters, and that Mr.Fowles cleverly takes advantage of the opposition and leave the quest of fact to the readers, thus creating a more"factual"world in the story.  相似文献

A Doll’s House and Macbeth obviously belong to different categories in content. However, the two heroines in these two plays, Nora Helmer and Lady Macbeth, demonstrate similar feminist qualities. By staging an overall contrastive analysis on the personality and tragic life of two protagonists from the perspective of feminism, it is founded that both of them are victims oppressed by the patriarchal system and they all have feminine consciousness against this system. Nevertheless, their distinctive complex personalities and different story settings make the reasons for their rebellion differ in many ways and they end up with different endings.  相似文献

The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is T.S. Eliot’s masterpiece, which marked the beginning of Eliot’s career as an influential poet. Prufrock is the image of an ineffectual, sorrowful and depressed western man in twentieth century. Eliot used a lot of images to reveal the city as a wasteland, the tedious life of the western modern people, and the bewildered and split personality of western people. Eliot succeeds in reflecting inner world and spiritual state of modern people with the long, fragmented images, which influence future writers.  相似文献

Local colorism as a trend first came to prominence in the late 19th century in America. The local colorists were devoted to capturing the unique customs, manners, speech, folklore and other qualities of a particular regional community, usually in humorous short stories. The most famous local colorist was Mark Twain. His fiction The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, published in 1884, was regarded as\"the first great novel in America\", as well as the most classical work of local colorism.  相似文献

Thoreau’s Walden and Chinese Tang Poems both attach great importance to nature, devoting large paragraphs to the depiction of it.The significance of this phenomenon is discussed in this paper.Based on the method of close reading and comparative study,it is found that nature, portrayed by Thoreau and Tang poets share one important character, that is,nature assumes subjectivity as an individual being.  相似文献

The growth in science understanding and reasoning of 12 children is being traced through their primary school years. The paper reports findings concerning children’s growing understandings of evaporation, and their changing responses to exploration activities, that show the complexity and coherence of learning pathways. Children’s responses to identical explorations of flight, separated by two years, are used to explore the interactions between conceptual knowledge and scientific reasoning, and the manner in which they change over this time. The paper discusses the particular insights afforded by a longitudinal study design, and some attendant methodological issues.  相似文献

The paper analyzes two stories, Joyce’s A Little Cloud and Woolf’s The Mark on the Wall, to make a comparison between epiphany and moment of importance, two major techniques in the stream of consciousness. Both are produced by the impact from the external reality and focus on the emotional and psychological processes, yet there exist three major differences between them.  相似文献

In A Room of One’s Own,Virginia Woolf argued her famous proposition that a woman needed to have a room of her own to achieve literary autonomy, and laid the foundation for present-day feminist criticism.Yet the author believes that economic independent does not foster women’s identity with certainty. In this thesis, the author explores the crucial place of spiritual and economic independence in building up women’s autonomy through analyzing Michael Cunningham Pulitzerwinning work The Hours, which he draws inventively on the life of Virginia Woolf and her work Mrs.Dalloway.  相似文献

The little foxes, Lillian Hellman’s most popular piece of drama, is a cynical play which concerns with family greed and revenge. Analyzed from various critical perspectives, The Little Foxes is most prominently studied on her political viewpoint. Here this paper is intended to study it from the aspect of women’s position in the drama, or more concretely, in that society by the analyzing of the two main women characters: Birdie and Regina, to reveal that whichever kind of life a woman living in the early twentieth chose to live, she would never be \"successful\".  相似文献
