Strategies for Implementing Marriage and Family Counselor Training in Counselor Education Programs

Three models for implementing marriage and family counseling training are presented: community counseling, interdisciplinary, and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Related conceptual and pragmatic issues are identified and discussed.     

The Use of Film in Marriage and Family Counselor Education

The authors introduce an innovative technique that can be included in marriage and family counselor education curricula. Feature films are discussed as an educational technique for the instruction and development of perceptual, conceptual, and executive counseling skills. They also outline the advantages for using film in counselor education, present various strategies for using them in the classroom, and offer examples of how they have integrated movies into introductory marriage and family courses.

This article reviews a number of inventories designed to measure dimensions of family systems theory and then provides a discussion of family systems assessment.     

A National Survey of Counselor Education Departments: Course Offerings on Marriage and Family

In this article the authors summarize information gathered in a national survey of the course offerings and programs in marriage and family counseling offered by 244 counselor education departments. Approximately two-thirds of those departments offered such courses, which typically included: family counseling, family counseling practicum, human sexuality, family theory, couples counseling, and marriage and family dynamics. Approximately 90% of the departments supported marriage and family course offerings in counselor education departments. Implications for programming in marriage and family counseling are discussed.     

Roles for Counselor Education Departments in Marriage and Family Counseling: Current Status and Projections

Preparation of counselors for marriage and family counseling roles is an increasingly important aspect of counselor education. This study sought to determine current level and projected involvement of a nationwide sample of counselor education departments in marriage and family counselor training and to assess the extent to which counselor educators in the sample agreed with 30 marriage and family counseling competencies.     

Training of the Career Development Specialist Within Counselor Education

What is the responsibility of counselor education programs in more efficiently preparing students in the area of career guidance and development? This article attempts to explain one department's efforts in this important area. It explains the rationale, development, and implementation of a subspeciality, Career Development Specialist (CDS), in a counselor education program. Covered are areas such as historical/conceptual review of the CDS, competencies and courses, recruitment of students, and where graduates have located jobs. Finally, the implications for counselor education are discussed.     

A Phenomenological Investigation of Wellness Within Counselor Education Programs

In this phenomenological investigation, the authors explored doctoral‐level counselor trainees’ (N = 12) perceptions of wellness promotion in programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs. Using semistructured interviews, the research team identified 3 structural themes (components of wellness, program culture, and recommendations) and 13 textural themes. Findings highlight the need for training regarding boundaries and self‐awareness.     

Integrating DSM-III-R Training Into School,Marriage and Family,and Mental Health Counselor Preparation

The authors discuss integrating Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd edition, revised; DSM-III-R; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) training into the school, marriage and family, and mental health counseling tracks of a master's level program that was designed according to Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs standards.     

The Use of Family Therapy Within a University Counseling Center

As a counterpoint to the oftentimes adversarial way that parents are viewed when they appear to be overinvolved in the lives of their college-aged students, this article advocates for the use of a family therapy perspective in university counseling centers. Benefits of this perspective include a broadening of the lens through which individual concerns are seen and a more nuanced social justice analysis in which issues of gender, race, and class are highlighted. A review of family therapy literature is intertwined with discussion regarding the relevance of this perspective when working with college students. Vignettes illustrate various applications of college-based family psychotherapy.     

Faculty and Student Perceptions of Dual Relationships Within Counselor Education: A Qualitative Analysis

The authors undertook this study to identify how counselor education faculty and students determine the ethical appropriateness of dilemmas portraying dual relationships in friendships, mentoring, monetary interactions, and romantic‐sexual relationships. Faculty and student perceptions of scenarios that depict dual relationships between faculty and students were assessed and analyzed using qualitative methods. Results suggest that, unlike most students, faculty trust the ability of counselor educators to maintain objectivity and avoid student exploitation even sometimes while engaged in dual‐role relationships. Furthermore, faculty may be unaware of students' concerns regarding the fairness of such relationships and the impact they have on the student body.

Disability and Counselor Education

Mainstreaming legislation is an impetus for social change in relation to treatment of individuals with disabilities. This change requires that counselor educators include content areas related to aspects of disability to prepare counselors to serve clients with disabilities. The author makes recommendations for curricular change for experiential and didactic training to increase a counselor trainee's sensitivity, skills, and knowledge regarding disability. Also, counselor educators are urged to team trainees from school and rehabilitation counseling training programs so that these professionals can work cooperatively for the benefit of the client with a disability.     

Implications of Counselor Conceptualizations for Counselor Education

Conceptualizations of novice and experienced counselors are examined to determine how they view client problems and change in counseling.     

Intergenerational Family Characteristics of Counselor Trainees

In comparing the intergenerational relationships of counselor trainees and a nonclinical sample, counselor trainees reported healthier relationships with their parents and spouses concerning intergenerational triangulation, intergenerational intimidation, and spousal fusion and less healthy relationships with spouses and children on nuclear family triangulation.
