Analysis and Pedagogical Implications of Interlanguage Fossilization

In foreign language teaching,it has always been found that there are many language learners whose second language(L2)level remains stagnant or even becomes worse no matter how hard they try.However,this may not relate to their attention given to language but to interlanguage fossilization,which results from various causes,is ubiquitous in second language acquisition(SLA)and foreign language learning.This paper,based on the empirical evidence of language learning and acquisition,probes into the nature and characteristics of interlanguage,analyzes the main causes of fossilization,and discusses pedagogical implications for avoiding fossilization in English language learning.     

The Impact of Recasts on Second Language Acquisition

The roles of recasts have been intensively studied in the first language (L1) research. This essay explores the role of recasts in second language acquisition, mainly focusing on discussing the studies addressing the following two issues: (1) the effects of recasts on the interaction of communication oriented classroom; (2) the role of recasts in promoting interlanguage development.Mixed evidence has been presented by second language (L2) studies regarding the impacts of recasts on second language acquisition.     

Stabilization of an abutment under a rigidly fixed bridge by holographical-speckle interferometry

Objective： There are no detailed reports of three-dimensional measurement of abutment teeth in mastication, because it is knotty to observe the rotation in chewing directly, and inexact to estimate indirectly. This work studies the three-dimensional stability of rigidly fixed bridge under the stresses of distributed loads and concentrated loads by optical method that gives the tip angle and rotation angle calculated directly based on measurement data. Methods： The specimen, taken from a 25-year-old male, was a left mandible without the second premolars and the first molars. As abutments, first premolar and second molar have complete periodontium. The specimen was soaked in formaldehyde solution. The bridge was fixed between two abutment teeth （first premolars and second molars）, and the mandible was cemented in a steel box. The load was increased from 0 kg to 23 kg. Laser holographic technique was used to measure the three-dimensional bit shift of the dens, both buccolingual bit shift and mesiodistal bit shift, and determine tip angle and rotation angle. Results： The effects of stress distribution on the rigidly fixed bridge were evaluated, and stabilization of the bridge under the stresses of distributed loads and concentrated loads, respectively, were analyzed. The results showed that the tips of two abutments were very similar, and no distinct difference was observed between the distributed load and the concentrated load. However, the maximum rotation angle for the distributed load was two to four times as large as that for the concentrated load. In the experiment, the tip angle of the abutment teeth was no more than 0.65 degree, and the rotation angle was no more than 0.60 degree. All maximum angles occurred in the second molar. Conclusion： The fixed bridge is considered to be safe. In addition, a method for measuring the rotation angle was provided effectively.     

Cross-cultural Pragmatic Analysis on Speech Act

The theory of speech acts tells us that when words are uttered,they perform three different kinds of speech acts.But cross-cultural communication raises a question that the same locutionary acts may perform different illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts,and in order to achieve the same illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts,people with different native languages may employ different locutionary acts to avoid the pragmatic failure.This paper aims to illustrate the differences on greeting,requesting,and rejecting between Chinese and Americans,focus on the cultural factors in language and cross-cultural communication,and using the fundamental cross-cultural theories to analyze the distinctions,such as Austin’s Speech Act Theory,Brown and Levinson Face Theory,Edward T Hall’s High-Context and Low-Context Communication,and Hofestede’s Value Dimensions.Finally,it tells the English learners to focus on the cultural difference in the cross-cultural communication to achieve the successful communication.     

Reading and education for students of immigrant origin in some Swedish municipalities

Researchers from Mid Sweden University and Kalmar University organised surveys on reading skills in Swedish municipalities. This paper will focus on the surveys made in four municipalities between 2002 and 2007. All students in grade 8 in these four municipalities participated in the surveys--in total 16,287 students. These surveys included a reading test for the students and information about the students collected from the teachers, including participation in instruction in Swedish as a second language and in their mother tongues. Students of immigrant origin in Sweden are offered the possibility to participate in instruction in Swedish as a second language and in instruction in the student＇s mother tongue. No obvious trends over time in the participation in Swedish as a second language and mother tongue instruction were found in the four municipalities on the tests we gave, in spite of national trends. There was no difference in results on the reading tests in Swedish between those students who participated in mother tongue instruction and those who did not, but there was a difference in test results between those who participated in Swedish as a second language and those who did not. Those who did not participate （in Swedish as a second language instruction） did, on average, score higher on the test. When different language groups are compared, it can be noted that a majority in all groups of immigrant students neither participate in Swedish as a second language nor in mother tongue instruction. However, there are important differences between boys and girls and between language groups. Girls seemed to be more willing than boys to participate in voluntary mother tongue instruction, while boys more often than girls had to participate in compulsory lessons in Swedish as a second language.

On Positive Transfer of Native Language in SLA

People have controversial ideas about the influence of our native language during the process of second language acquisition.The popular belief is that native language(NL) interferes the second language(L2) learning,which is known as negative transfer,while positive transfer is seldom mentioned,or even is neglected in the study of second language acquisition.We found that in teaching when the L2 learners experienced difficulties in understanding another language,they may resort to their NL to get help.So we can’t only think about its negative aspect.In fact that NL plays a positive role in SLA,so we should make full use of the common features to lead to the positive transfer,then to strengthen the confidence of the second language learners.

Alien War?On March 5,1979, detectors in outer space detected an extremely powerful explosion occurring 180,000 light years away outside our galaxy. On Academic Conflict in Medical Research Articles

Objective:To investigate the distribution of academic conflicts, if any, in medical research articles. Methods:Twenty-seven and 25 medical research articles in the field of internal medicine were selected from English and Chinese respectable jour nals, respectively. Then, the speech acts that reflected a conflict between a scientist’s knowledge claim and another scientist’s knowledge claim were manually searched and recorded in each paper. Data were analyzed using non-parametric Chi-test. Results:There were 123 academic conflicts recorded in the English corpus and 49 Academic Conflicts in the Chinese corpus. Significant difference was observed in the overall frequency of academic conflicts between the English and Chinese medical discourse (p=0.001). Besides, as for the distribution within research articles, introduction and discussion sections were the sections where Academic Conflict speech acts were most likely to occur in both corpra. Conclusion:The Chinese scholars are less likely to criticize peers. Introduction and discussion sections were the sections where Academic Conflict speech acts were most likely to occur. Our results are in agreement with previous results and confirmed the claim that highly different cultures vary in their discourse preferences. Our findings are of pedagogical significance.     

Endoscopic ultrasonographic features of gastric linitis plastica in fifty-five Chinese patients

The objective of this study was to investigate the endosonographic appearance of gastric linitis plastica(GLP) and to study the usefulness of endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS) for the T and N staging of GLP.EUS examinations of 55 patients with histologically proven GLP were retrospectively studied.In all patients,EUS showed that lesions involved at least one-third of the circumference of the stomach.Based on the findings of the EUS,the 55 patients were divided into two groups.There were 32(58.2%) patients in the first group.EUS of this group showed that the five sonographic layers had disappeared and had been replaced by a hypoechogenic thickening of the gastric wall.There were 23(41.8%) patients in the second group.EUS of this group showed that the first three sonographic layers were blurred and thickened,and the fourth layer was significantly thickened.The full thickness of the gastric wall was significantly thicker in first than in the second group of patients(P<0.01).The incidence of perigastric lesions was significantly higher in the first than in the second group of patients(P<0.01).Results for the 15 patients following preoperative EUS were compared postoperatively with histopathologic findings for T and N staging.The overall diagnostic accuracy of the T stage was 73.3% and of the N stage was 60.0%.In eight patients,we used EUS to assess a therapeutic response.No response was observed in five patients and a partial response in three.EUS images of GLP are characteristic.EUS is helpful in diagnosing GLP and for assessing the T and N stages.
