LI Ligang honored with Doornbos prize

Together with two colleagues from Europe and US, Dr. LI Ligang from the CAS Shanghai Astronomical Observatory has been awarded the Doornbos Memorial Prize for his outstanding contributions to the studies of thermal convection inside the earth and a planet, dynamo theory, and simulation.

CAS research is honored with National S&T Awards

The National Supreme Science and Technology Award in 2006 goes to Prof. LI Zhensheng, a geneticist from the CAS Institute of Genetics & Developmental Biology. At the Awarding Ceremony held on 27 February in Beijing, Prof. Li, also a CAS member, received the certificate for the prestigious award, which comes with a five million yuan (about $650,000) prize, from Chinese President HU Jintao.     

HE Hongping honored with Gilles Kahn Prize in 2007

Prof. HE Hongping, a mineralogist from Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, CAS, has been presented with the Gilles Kahn Prize in 2007. The awarding ceremony was held on 24 May in Beijing.     

Prof. LU Yongxiang honored with the Harnack Medal

CAS President LU Yongxiang has received the Harnack Medal, the highest distinction that the Max Planck Society (MPG) could confer, for his success as the top-ranking representative of Chinese science. The award was presented by MPG President Peter Gruss at a meeting of the MPG Senate on 24 November, 2006, in Berlin.     

ZHANG Fusui honored with a prize by US National Shellfisheries Association

In recognition of his valuable work to the marine shellfish farming research, Prof. ZHANG Fusui, a marine biologist and aquaculture expert from the CAS Institute of Oceanology, was honored with a prize of outstanding contributions by the US National Shellfisheries Association on 1 March.

Chemists Honored with National Top S&T Award

XU Guangxian, chemist, was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in November 1920.In 1951, he received his Ph.D.from Columbia University in US.He was elected a CAS Member in 1980.He serves as a vice editor-chief of Science in China and Chinese Science Bulletin.He has long been engaged in teaching and research in physical chemistry and inorganic chemistry which involves the fields of quantum chemistry, chemical bond theory, coordination chemistry, extraction chemistry, nuclear fuel chemistry and rare-earth science, etc.     

Chinese Researchers Honored with Prince Mahidol Award

Chinese researchers have been bestowed the 2003 Prince Mahidol Award in medicine for their contributions to the development of an anti-malarial medicine, Qinghaosu and its derivatives. His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand conferred the awards on January 29 at the Chakri Throne Hall in Bangkok.     

Huang Kun Honored with National Top S&T Award

Together with Prof. Wang Xuan from Peking University, CAS physicist Huang Kun received Supreme Scientific and Technological (S&T) Award in 2001 from Chinese President Jiang Zeming in Beijing on February 2. Each gets five million yuan (US$ 602,000) as part of the award for their lifetime achievements.     

CAS Researcher Honored with International Award for Coal R&D Accomplishments

Prof. Li Baoqing from the CAS Institute of Coal Chemistry (ICC) won the 2004 Award for Innovation in Coal Conversion at the 21 st International Pittsburgh Coal Conference held from September 12 to 17 in Osaka, Japan.

The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, awarded the 2002 Bower Award for Achievement in Science to John Werner Cahn for his research in the field of materials science. Over the past four and a half decades, Cahn's ideas have vitally affected every area of the field and have strongly influenced statistical physics as well. In particular, Cahn's invention of the Cahn-Hilliard equation has been path breaking, as has his contribution to quasicrystallography.     

Soft,biocompatible materials and skin-like electronics as wearable devices: an interview with John A. Rogers

Recent advances in active materials, micro-fabrication techniques, ultra-miniaturized design approaches and hybrid device layouts form the foundations for emerging classes of unusual systems that can capture physiological signals from the human body in a physically imperceptible fashion at nearly any anatomical location, external on the skin or internal on vital organ systems. Of particular interest with these technologies are their thin geometries, flexible/stretchable physical properties and unique form factors, to enable conformal and gentle contacts with soft, curved and dynamic surfaces of living tissues. Commercial embodiments of skin-integrated devices with clinical-grade monitoring capabilities are just now becoming widely available not only in developed countries but also in the most resource-constrained areas of the globe. A specific example is in skin-like—sometimes referred to as ‘epidermal’—wireless electronics for continuous monitoring of essential markers of physiological health status, with accuracy and reliability comparable to that of expensive, wired-based systems currently used with patients in intensive care units, but cost-effectively and applicable in any setting—in hospitals, health clinics, work environments or in the home. These technologies have the potential to revolutionize diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for the care of patients. NSR spoke to one of the scientific leaders in this field—a 2009 MacArthur Fellow, the winner of the 2022 US National Academy of Sciences James Prize in Science and Technology Integration and one of the few individuals in history to be elected to all three US National Academies, namely the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Science and the National Academy of Medicine, Professor John A. Rogers, the Director of the Querrey-Simpson Institute of Bioelectronics at Northwestern University on the recent advancements and the prospects of soft, biocompatible electronic systems and skin-like wearable devices.
