ABSTRACTWiLS is a non-profit organization with over 500 libraries and cultural institutions as members. It facilitates collaborative projects and services to save members time and money and to advance library service. WiLS is designed to be a nimble organization; our staffing structure, membership and cost recovery models, virtual office environment, and service development processes all allow WiLS to anticipate and respond to member needs. We take a unique approach to designing new services to meet those needs, one which is like creating a tapestry. As we begin to conceive of the service, an outline appears on the cloth, but it is faint and difficult to recognize. As we learn more, the outline becomes clearer and we see not only the shape of the service, but begin to see the details that add threads to create the color and texture of the work. By the time we have completed the process, we have a full understanding of the service we may offer, and the full picture with all of its detail has emerged. Any “art” that we conceive and create comes from who we are and the environment in which we are creating. In this article, we’ll share more about our organization and the foundations that make us who we are, along with the process we use to develop our service tapestries. 相似文献

AbstractPublic libraries are a source of information and resources for the local community, they also play a role in the use of technologies such as geographic information systems (GIS) in that regard. GIS uses maps as output mediums for displaying demographic or similar information, as well as for spatial comparison or spatially based analysis. This is useful for gaining knowledge as well as for decision making. This article reports research into the awareness and use of GIS-type systems in public library settings in hopes of better understanding the benefits, drawbacks, and limitations to use of systems such as these. Primary findings suggest that there continues to exist limited understanding of the capabilities of GIS technology in public libraries and therefore very little demand for it exists in public librarians and patrons alike. 相似文献

AbstractThe recruitment of international students continues to be an increasing priority for higher education institutions concerned with strengthening their approach to internationalization. As numbers have continued to grow, the university library has been required to self-evaluate how it supports such a diverse student population. The University of Chester’s Learning and Information Services department in the United Kingdom undertook sector-wide research within higher education libraries to try and identify examples of best practice in relation to international student support prior to reviewing its own provision. The results from a survey of sector-wide best practice formed the basis for a series of recommendations considered by the University of Chester to develop the library service aimed at improving the performance and engagement of international students. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. Creating new public programming that showcases new technology is an idea that has great appeal for most public libraries. This article summarizes ideas that emerged from a library planning charrette that was hosted by the Louisville Free Public Library, with the M.I.T. Design Laboratory facilitating. The article also suggests ways in which innovation and experimentation can be implemented at low cost within the bounds of an existing public library infrastructure. The use of open source Internet content resources is recommended as a source of inspiration. 相似文献

ABSTRACT In this time of ongoing health care changes, consumers need to become better informed to actively participate in their health care decisions. As a result, hospital libraries are being challenged to address this need. Scottsdale Healthcare's Health Sciences Libraries have responded to this challenge by establishing a Health Information Center at the premiere shopping mall in the area. Implementing a Health Information Center at a mall is a unique way to bring medical information to the community. The purpose of this paper is to describe the planning process, the implementation, and the future vision of the Health Information Center at Scottsdale Fashion Square. 相似文献

AbstractAround the world, building and managing library websites calls for solving problems. For instance, library administrators must resolve technical issues, like broken hyperlinks, as well as organizational issues, like staffing problems. To help libraries deliver services to their patrons, this essay first presents the idea of collaborative advantage as one way to think about problem-solving in library websites. Then, I describe a study of U.S. state government agencies. Finally, I present in detail five best practices for use in library website creation to foster discussion about the costs and benefits of working with third-parties. 相似文献

Academic libraries have always strived to be purposively involved in the university's mission attainment efforts. Today, the increase of retention levels is paramount, and, in many cases, it is at the center of higher education institution's strategic plans. For Andrews University, for example, the goal is to reach 80% in the next five years. In the United States, student retention efforts become even more critical due, in part, to declining enrollment numbers set off by soaring higher education costs. Academic librarians are aware of the library's role in the university's overall efforts to increase persistence rates and curtail attrition. Through a literature review, this article highlights how academic libraries are participating in this process. This study focuses on how academic libraries can be leaders in their Institutions by adopting a user-centered philosophy and services that will promote life-long learning, enhance students’ academic experience, and promote engagement, leading to retention. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis paper reports on results of a questionnaire distributed to North American public libraries to determine what types of services they are providing to populations experiencing barriers to using bricks-and-mortar branches. The results indicate that many are offering homebound delivery and that bookmobiles remain popular, particularly in libraries serving large geographic areas. Some libraries are exploring kiosk, or vending machine style services. Lastly, new trends are emerging, notably pop-up libraries, vans, and book bikes. 相似文献

As copyright law is so closely ingrained with library services, it is important for librarians to learn about it and how to balance the law with the needs of users. Unfortunately, many Library and Information Science degree programs do not address copyright issues as part of course curriculum. As such, librarians may have to educate themselves about the law. This article will identify seven steps librarians can take to facilitate this process. 相似文献

Background: In 2005, the University of Calgary entered into a contract to provide library services to the staff and physicians of Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone (AHS CZ), creating the Health Information Network Calgary (HINC). Objectives: A user satisfaction survey was contractually required to determine whether the new library service model created through the agreement with the University of Calgary was successful. Our additional objective was to determine whether information and resources provided through the HINC were making an impact on patient care. Methods: A user satisfaction survey of 18 questions was created in collaboration with AHS CZ contract partners and distributed using the snowball or convenience sample method. Results: Six hundred and ninety-four surveys were returned. Of respondents, 75% use the HINC library services. More importantly, 43% of respondents indicated that search results provided by library staff had a direct impact on patient care decisions. Conclusions: Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone staff are satisfied with the new service delivery model, they are taking advantage of the services offered, and using library provided information to improve patient care. 相似文献

Abstract Training, supervision, and evaluation of student assistants is not a topic covered in most library school curricula; it is a skill that it is assumed one will have or acquire through on-the-job experience. This article focuses on the hiring, supervision, training, and evaluation of student information assistants in the reference/electronic resource setting. Student Information Assistants are known by many names-reference assistants, peer counselors, research assistants, and database assistants, to name a few-but within this article I will use the name Student Information Assistants (SIAs). 相似文献

Abstract This article presents the experience of Circulation Services at Booth Library, Eastern Illinois University, during a 31-month relocation to temporary facilities while the building was undergoing renovation. The move to temporary locations presented new challenges and required unique solutions. Issues such as the rationale for the move to the temporary facilities, the organization of the temporary branches, the delivery service, preservation and security, staffing issues, and the role of student workers are discussed. The article recommends extensive planning prior to a move to temporary facilities, as well as the adoption of a flexible approach during the duration of the stay in the locations. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Building on experiences from earlier digital initiatives and partnerships, the University of Virginia has developed new services and forged new collaborations between traditional information technology and library units in support of changing approaches to science and engineering research and education. Over the past 4 years, the library has evolved through numerous service models, changes in institutional vision, and budgetary shortfalls and has emerged with a new understanding of where to invest resources and energy for coming challenges. 相似文献
