Learning How to Engage Students Online in Hard Times

In a context of financial restraint and enterprising university managers, teacher-researchers have reason to be sceptical about the trend towards online teaching and away from learning for its own sake. This article departs from both economic and technological determinism and turns instead to ideas about technology embedded in social and political institutions. Activity theory offers a useful means of analysing such embeddedness. Its Marxian assumptions about human nature specify a non-deterministic approach to technology. Its dynamic model of the subjects, tools, and objects of activity within a context of rules, a community, and a division of labour helps to specify aspects of the authors process of learning how to use electronic conferencing effectively. A full deployment of activity theory would also analyse the activity of students. Here the evidence comes mainly from the activity of researcher-teachers engaging greater activity among students. The numbers of students involved precludes reliable quantitative analysis but qualitative evidence from students does support conclusions about researcher-teachers learning how to make best use of electronic conferencing.Dr Andrew Vandenberg is a senior Lecturer in Politics at Deakin University, Australia. 周口店野外实践教学是我校海洋地质专业本科教育中的重要环节。本文以笔者的亲身带班为例,从强调“大海洋地质观”、野外路线中的引导、教学方法中的探索、室内总结报告中的强化等几方面论述了如何在周口店野外教学过程中突出“海洋地质”特色,认为要从教学思想、教学手段、教学内容等方面采取措施,全方位帮助学生建立“大海洋地质观”。

随着市场经济的发展和高等教育的改革。大学生的人生观和价值观发生了变化，高校大学生的思想状况出现了许多问题。鉴于此，加强大学生的思想政治教育非常必要。本文分析了高校图书馆在思想政治教育中的独特作用。进而提出了加强图书馆思想政治教育功能的措施。     

Unpacking the nature and practices of inclusive education: the case of two schools in Hyderabad,India

This paper reports insights into the nature and practices of inclusive schools in India using a case study methodology. Being a signatory of the Salamanca Statement, the Government of India has undertaken to implement an inclusive system of education in schools. An initial survey conducted to identify sample inclusive schools showed that inclusive education is being adopted by many schools on a superficial level. In fact, it was found that the term ‘inclusive school’ was more of an ornamental name used to create an impression of inclusion. Deliberations with the managements and teachers of these schools revealed that the concept was being adopted and implemented in Indian mainstream schools albeit in the absence of any clearly defined ideas on the subject. An in-depth exploration was undertaken into the inclusive practices followed in two case-study schools. Interviews were conducted with the school heads, class teachers, students and their parents. This was accompanied by observations of the practices followed by the so-called inclusive schools. Data thus collected were analysed using qualitative analysis. Results of the study demonstrate lack of resources, infrastructure, teaching practices, curricular and co-curricular activities which if incorporated would actually bring about inclusive practices beneficial to students of diverse needs. The paper concludes with policy proposals with respect to a clear definition of the concept of inclusive education and the various provisions that should be made available in the inclusive schools.     

Using case studies in business education to promote networked thinking: findings of an intervention study

Case studies are central to the way management is currently taught at universities. Among other benefits attributed to the case study method is that it promotes networked thinking by learners. Networked thinking takes account of interactions and repercussions, making it crucial to decision-making within the complex system of rules that shapes current business reality. However, there is virtually no empirical evidence of the extent to which the case study method actually delivers the advantages attributed to it. This paper aims to remedy that gap in the literature. The paper considers the extent to which the case study method promotes networked thinking on the part of students on business and management courses. The research is designed as an intervention study involving pre- and post-testing. The study finds that students who have worked on a case study correctly identify more interactions in post-testing than in pre-testing.     

Technology Acceptance in Social Work Education: Implications for the Field Practicum

The exponential growth and sophistication of new information and computer technology (ICT) have greatly influenced human interactions and provided new metaphors for understanding the world. The acceptance and integration of ICT into social work field education are examined here using the technological acceptance model. This article also explores potential challenges regarding the adoption of ICT into social work field practica. The article concludes with implications for adopting and integrating ICTs in social work field education.

EARTHWATCH Expeditions Impact Science Education: Exposing Teachers to Science and Technology in the Field and in the Classroom

EARTHWATCH expeditions provide teachers with opportunities to work side-by-side with leading scientists, engage first-hand in scientific discovery, use innovative technology, and renew their commitment to teaching. Educators join international EARTHWATCH teams, consisting of members of the public and a research staff, to explore the intricacies of tropical and dry forests, to unearth remains from the past, to monitor endangered ecosystems and species, and to understand the cultural heritage of our world's peoples. EARTHWATCH, an international non-profit organization, sponsors more than 150 research projects in over 55 countries each year. At work in the field, EARTHWATCH teams revel in the mysteries of science and delight in the thrill of discovery. Hands-on scientific investigations inspire teachers to return to their classrooms with enlightened teaching ideas and a strong commitment to global conservation. Working closely with their students, teachers develop innovative classroom projects using the latest technology to promote international sharing of EARTHWATCH project information and subsequent lesson ideas via the Internet. Engaging the reader in six case studies, the following chapter highlights the educational potential of EARTHWATCH and the impact of technology as an innovative teaching tool in the field and the classroom.     

The writing on the wall: enacting place pedagogies in order to reimagine schooling for Black male youth

This ethnographic case study examines how Black educators at an urban middle school enacted critical place pedagogies in order to create a sense of community – that is, a sense of belonging to the place of school – and mutual nurturing between people and space in an attempt to transform how their Black males experienced school. Educators at Starks Middle School did this in order to subvert the failure narrative that describes negative schooling experiences and the ultimate failure of Black boys across this nation. Place pedagogies of Starks Middle School – the signs, symbols, text, pictures, and affirmations used to educate, encourage, and inspire students – were enacted in order to reimagine school space for their Black male students.     

A Feeling for the Environment: Emotion Talk in/for the Pedagogy of Public Environmental Education

Emotions are important aspects in/for the pedagogy of environmental education (EE). However, the literature on the relationship between emotions and EE has not explored how emotion talk furnishes teaching identity claims and mediates instruction in/about the environment. Therefore, the present study draws on two ethnographic case studies to investigate the rhetorical and situational use of emotion discursive categories in interviews and authentic EE learning situations. Our findings suggest that rather than just being an outcome of effective instructional models designed to instill an environmental consciousness in students, emotion discourses are means to help account for and concretely realize the pedagogy of EE.

十八大精神学习教育的实效应当以受教育者的接受程度和效果为最终评价标准。文章在调研基础上,探讨了大学生学习十八大精神低效度的成因,基于接受理论提出了提高大学生学习贯彻十八大精神实效的对策。

期望激励理论是组织行为学中一个重要的研究课题,在不同领域中运用得当则可发挥重要作用.在高校思想政治教育领域中运用期望激励理论,主要是关注学生的个人需要,处理好个人努力、绩效、奖酬三者之间的关系,使期望激励与高校思想政治教育处于良性循环之中,将其合力发挥至最佳值.     

Introduction to the special issue ‘How adolescents read and learn on the Web: internal and external factors (Introducción al número especial ‘Cómo leen y aprenden los adolescentes en la red: factores internos y externos’)

ABSTRACT

The World Wide Web has become a major information resource for adolescents (i.e., 10–19 years of age), offering an unprecedented amount of information on virtually any topic. While the Web can potentially offer new learning opportunities, it also presents several challenges. Reading and learning on the Web requires a set of advanced literacy skills that adolescents do not necessarily possess and need to develop in order to effectively deal with the complexity of information encountered online. This special issue brings together five empirical articles and a discussion paper that examine internal and external factors that are beneficial (or detrimental) to adolescents’ reading and learning on the Web, and contribute to explaining how young learners develop complex literacy skills. Theoretically, the special issue contributes to the conceptualization of what researchers refer to as ‘multiple documents literacy’. In practice, it informs researchers and educators of emerging empirical results regarding adolescents’ information behaviour, as well as on instructional strategies that can be effective for developing adolescents’ literacy skills.     

“双一流”建设高校推动我国政用产学研融通创新的作用机制——基于中关村科学城典型项目的研究

“双一流”建设高校参与组建的政用产学研融通创新体系是推动我国国际科技创新中心建设、实施创新驱动发展战略的重要力量。本研究以我国国际科技创新中心的核心区——中关村科学城的典型政用产学研融通创新项目为案例对“双一流”建设高校在我国政用产学研融通创新体系中的重要作用进行了研究。案例分析表明:第一,“双一流”建设高校与政府、企业等建立的融通创新模式主要包括“项目衔接型”、“平台共建型”和“产业技术联盟型”,且分别适用于高校自主知识产权技术成果转化、高校与企业基于产权长期合作和共创共享紧密合作的情况;第二,“双一流”建设高校在融通创新体系中通过培养人才和产出创新成果,不仅对政府、企业等共同参与的科技成果转化起到显性的直接与间接作用,还具有传播创新文化与塑造创新需求理念的隐性作用。基于此,“双一流”建设高校在推动我国政用产学研融通创新体系建立中应继续推进技术转移办公室建设,加强概念验证中心建设,完善和拓展融通创新模式。
