国外大学图书馆学术出版服务实践进展

[目的/意义]对国外高校图书馆的学术出版模式进行调研分析,为国内高校图书馆出版服务提供指导和借鉴。[方法/过程]采用文献回顾的方法,对国外大学图书馆出版服务理论与实践进行系统梳理,然后在调研图书馆出版联盟发布的2014-2016年《图书馆出版指南》基础上,阐述国外高校图书馆的学术出版服务的实践进展,对图书馆出版的组织形式、经费来源及服务内容等进行深入剖析与总结。[结果/结论]总结图书馆出版服务的特点,并对我国图书馆界开展出版服务提供参考和借鉴。

高校图书馆发展数字资源馆藏的调查研究

本研究调查了三种不同类型的群体（学生、教师、馆员）对图书馆发展数字资源馆藏的看法。结果显示:高校图书馆应积极发展数字资源馆藏;应加大力度整理网络可检索资源;资料类型是选择电子资源的重要参考因素。分析结果还表明:读者与图书馆员在“获取”与“收藏”、馆藏量大小以及付费利用数字资源等方面的看法有明显差异。

Frequency Distributions of Recorded Use for Students Using Academic Library Collections

The distribution of activity among students using academic library collections is discussed. Frequency distributions of recorded use are considered for six libraries. A mixture of Poisson distributions with a negative binomial distribution of means is used to approximate the observed distributions. The extrapolation of distributions of use from this model is described. Expected numbers of non-users in time periods of differing lengths are extrapolated for one set of data. Levels of use not exceeded by 90% and 95% of potential users are estimated from a geometric distribution fitted to the data. The value of three times the sample mean is shown to lie between these levels.

Academic Libraries as Digital Gateways: Linking Students to the Burgeoning Wealth of Open Online Collections

ABSTRACT

Digital collections of full-text e-books are proliferating on the Web and provide a wealth of open content for students. To examine whether academic libraries are providing a digital gateway to these resources, ten e-book titles from open digital collections were searched in the online catalogs and Web pages of ten academic libraries serving distance learners. Only three of the digital collection e-books were available from any of the library catalogs, and none were found on library Web pages. Availability of the ten e-book titles through Google and other digital discovery tools also had mixed results. Continued projects for improved delivery of open online content are necessary. In order to fulfill their role as digital gateways for their academic communities, libraries must pursue metadata standards to support cross-searching, collaborative projects, and development of e-resource search software, which integrates with the library catalog.     

Building Collections through Purchase Suggestions in Academic Libraries

Abstract

This research studies the fields contained in “Suggest a Purchase” forms from 100 university libraries, focusing on the data they can provide to subject specialists to make decisions about collection development. The research will consider whether the content of “Suggest a Purchase” forms may be used to aid subject specialists and collection development librarians to make decisions concerning the purchasing of books and other materials. Statistical evidence gathered through the “Suggest a Purchase” forms is analyzed to justify the relevancy of specific fields. The research examines whether patron-initiated purchases may offer data concerning collection gaps and trends in users’ needs. The paper concludes with recommendations for best practices in the design and content of patron suggestion forms.     

Telephone Interviewing Practices within Academic Libraries

This study explores the use of telephone interviews within academic libraries by surveying the 112 academic institutional members of the Association of Research Libraries to identify how telephone interviews are utilized. By comparing the literature to the research results, the authors conclude with best practices for telephone interviews.     

Evaluating Library Instruction in Academic Libraries:

This study reviews the literature on the evaluation of bibliographic instruction in academic libraries from 1980 to 1993. Four main issues are discussed: (1) the reasons why librarians are evaluating, (2) to what degree they are evaluating, (3) what specific aspects they are evaluating, and (4) which methodologies are being used. Results indicate that, despite a growing interest in the evaluation of bibliographic instruction, the same pattern of limited systematic evaluation identified in 1980 continues to exist. Barriers to the successful implementation of evaluation, as well as possible directions for the future, are also presented.

The Prevalence and Practices of Academic Library Journal Clubs

Increased mention of journal clubs in the library literature and the recent creation of clubs at the authors' institutions sparked curiosity about how widespread they are in academic libraries. An online survey announced on library listservs assessed their prevalence and practices. Library journal clubs promote current awareness, analysis skills, group cohesion, and intra-library knowledge, and offer a low-cost professional development opportunity in times of budget difficulties.
