Although posttraumatic stress theory has beenextensively developed in the psychological andmedical literature in the last decade,development of secondary traumatic stresstheory is still in its infancy. Thetraumatology literature reveals a focus on thetraumatized victims and, with few exceptions,excludes those who are secondarily traumatizedthrough their counselling work with survivorsof traumatic life events. Claims have recentlybeen made that counsellors working in the fieldof trauma are vulnerable and at risk fordeveloping trauma symptoms similar to thoseexperienced by traumatized clients. The authorreviews the recent research and literature onsecondary traumatic stress and addresses theimplications of these research findings tocounsellor educators and practitioners workingin the field of trauma.  相似文献

Counsellors working in a multicultural society need special training if they are to meet the needs of culturally different clients. Consciousness raising, knowledge of other cultural groups and learning appropriate counselling skills are all essential components of this training. The main focus of such training, however, should be on acquiring cultural self-awareness. Knowledge of one's own cultural values, beliefs and assumptions are essential before effective interaction with persons from other cultures is possible. Training methods should concentrate on experiential learning and discussion. There should be provision for some interaction with members of other cultural groups.  相似文献

What output indicator is it appropriate to take for economically purposive research? Is it the successful completion of the research, or its successful commercialisation, or its commercialisation in such a way that benefits accrue to the nation? This paper explores the divergence between the second and third of these “bottom lines”. For taxpayers it is the third that counts. Summary This paper proposes a comprehensive counselor preparation model within the philosophical and religious beliefs of Pakistan. A series of courses are presented to provide a cohesive and comprehensive body of knowledge to counselors to work in educational, business, health and community settings. The proposed curriculum reflects the philosophy, beliefs, and values of the country in terms of human development, life/career and educational planning. Emotions are a core semantic component of human communication. Since counsellors are humans we assume that their own state of emotions could affect their intuitional effort when taking decisions concerning their clients. Therefore, the accuracy of detected emotions by counsellors could be doubtful. And this highlights the need for complementing the intuitional effort of counsellors by computational approach. Therefore, ascertaining the efficacy of computational algorithm, there is the need to benchmark with humans. In this paper, we explore empirically, the extent to which counsellors own emotional states influence their perception of emotions expressed in text. This influence is investigated through the level of agreement among counsellors when annotating emotions expressed in students’ personal life’s stories. The result shows strong intra-counsellor annotation agreement of emotions while inter-counsellors annotation agreement was low. Furthermore, the intra-annotation agreement of emotions was found to be strongly correlated to the counsellors’ self-reported emotions. We speculate, based on the findings, that the emotional state of counsellors influences their emotion perception while tracking emotions in text. Based on the results, we discuss the advantages of using an automated e-counselling system for emotion analysis.  相似文献

Academic counsellors or tutors are engaged as a link between learners and distance teaching institutions. They perform various roles such as facilitating learning of subject matter content, assessing assignments, providing motivation and encouragement, and supervising research/term papers/project work. Each of these roles requires specific competencies to enable them to perform satisfactorily. This paper identifies the roles performed by academic counsellors at the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and the competencies required for each role. It also provides a generic list of competencies required to perform as an academic counsellor. Based on self‐rating of the competency of a group of academic counsellors, the paper recommends the training of academic counsellors and the development of distance teaching materials for use in competence‐building.  相似文献

Constructivist and interactionist models have been heralded as part of a new contextualist trend for counselling. They were developed in reaction to traditional organismic agestage theories of development which neglected important environmental influences. This paper will show that these new approaches are limited in the same way that the earlier developmental theories are: that they absolve and discourage looking at destructive social circumstances and arrangements that lead to problems that get defined in individualistic terms. Thoughtful attention to the concepts of context and individualism is essential to establishing the criteria that a more adequate contextual theory must satisfy.  相似文献

Occupational aspirations of school children are undergoing changes as more men and women enter nontraditional spheres of work. Nevertheless, Papageorgiou (1982) reported that the overwhelming majority of a sample of upper elementary through high school students in Colorado regarded traditional gender roles as their only choice, and gender role stereotyping as placing serious limitations on career choices, particularly for females. In this article, we describe a replication of Papageorgiou's study in a western Canadian school district, with similar results. Gender-role stereotyping still appears to dominate the occupational aspirations of the majority of school children. Implications are drawn for counsellors interested in promoting career aspirations based on abilities and interests rather than gender-role stereotypes.  相似文献
