The virtual laboratory concept applied to strain measurements

In recent years the methodology of engineering education has been changing and many projects deal with improving the educational software. This paper reports on the virtual laboratory, a virtual environment applied to experimental analysis. The goals of the virtual laboratory are to introduce the laboratory environment to the student entering this world, so different from the typical theoretical lectures, for the first time, and to overcome the above-mentioned drawbacks. It should be mentioned that the virtual laboratory is not meant to replace highly enriching, practical experience, but rather is meant to train the individual, in order to improve his/her performance in later actual practice. The virtual laboratory experience starts with the study of strain measurements, an engineering technique widely used to measure deformations, strains, mechanical properties of materials and other variables which are used to analyse many problems.The strain measurement virtual laboratory is meant to offer the possibility of simulating experiences, undergone in a real laboratory, through the Internet. The student is expected to familiarize him/herself with the techniques, procedures, devices and theories in the laboratory environment.

A guide to McCarthy interpretation

The aim of the present study was to develop a system of tables to facilitate interpretation of the McCarthy Scales of Children's Abilities. Tables are presented that organize the McCarthy subtests according to Bannatyne's, Sattler's, and Meeker's systems of interpretation. In addition, tables that organize the McCarthy Scales into categories that reflect factors likely to influence various subtests are presented. These tables will provide a more structured approach to McCarthy interpretation and a straightforward empirical method for generating hypotheses regarding individual strengths and weaknesses in intellectual ability.

南开大学生物实验中心针对自身实验室设置及管理中遇到的问题,建立了实验室安全教育制度,以课堂讲解、专题讲座及逃生演练等多种形式,从试剂安全、仪器安全、生物安全、环境安全、消防安全以及应急策略6个方面进行普及式的、拉网式的、扫盲式的安全知识教育。为了切实保障安全教育的效果,还将安全教育纳入实验课成绩评定系统,并通过实验室安全网络学习准入制度,建立了安全教育效果保障机制,为保障实验室安全奠定了坚实基础。

The Transition from Higher Education to Employment in Europe 1

The study of the so‐called transition phase in the lives of young people as they move from higher education graduation to employment is becoming an important area of study. A thorough understanding of the process contributes to a general understanding of the link between higher education and employment. The transition phase is examined from an international comparative perspective. Transition can be “smooth” or “rough”, Japan being known as having, by and large, the smoothest and the most institutionally aided process of transition. The type of institution from which one graduates plays a role in the type of transition process that one will experience, but it does not follow that graduates of applied programmes and institutions (Fachhochschulen) will have an easier time than graduates of traditional universities. The subject as a whole, that is filled with subtleties, clearly deserves to be the object of additional study.
