Thoreau’s Walden and Chinese Tang Poems both attach great importance to nature, devoting large paragraphs to the depiction of it.The significance of this phenomenon is discussed in this paper.Based on the method of close reading and comparative study,it is found that nature, portrayed by Thoreau and Tang poets share one important character, that is,nature assumes subjectivity as an individual being.  相似文献

William Faulkner, the Nobel Prize winner for literature in 1950, is one of the most famous American writers. In "A Rose for Emily", he boldly uses the symbolism writing technique. Emily’s tragedy reveals the conflicts and contradictions between the old and new social concepts and values. With the help of symbolism, William Faulkner thoroughly and deeply portrays the southern American’s spiritual crisis during the historic reform in terms of artistic writing style and unique thoughts.  相似文献

The novel Sons and Lovers, which is Lawrence’s best acclaimed work, is of autobiographic air. It is called the best representation of Sigmund Freud’s "Oedipus Complex"theory by critics, though Lawrence denied having read Freud before writing the novel. However, it can shed new light on the novel when read in a different point of view. Paul’s road to become a real man can not be separated from his mother, Miriam and Clara, who is Paul’s first and second loves respectively. This article will analyze the novel in feminist perspective and concentrate on the three women’s sacrifice to Paul’s growth in a man-centered society, in hope of better understanding the intension of the novel.  相似文献

This paper tries to analyze Philip Larkin’s poem"High Window"from a deconstructive perspective. It is to show that in the poem the key words/signifiers are always under erasure, and thus the chain of signification is endless since the poem is self-deconstructing. Then, the paper argues that the linguistic features of the poem paradoxically meaningful in the sense that it reflects the poet’s skepticism and anxiety.  相似文献

In A Room of One’s Own,Virginia Woolf argued her famous proposition that a woman needed to have a room of her own to achieve literary autonomy, and laid the foundation for present-day feminist criticism.Yet the author believes that economic independent does not foster women’s identity with certainty. In this thesis, the author explores the crucial place of spiritual and economic independence in building up women’s autonomy through analyzing Michael Cunningham Pulitzerwinning work The Hours, which he draws inventively on the life of Virginia Woolf and her work Mrs.Dalloway.  相似文献

John Milton introduces the Biblical world into literature. Some modern critics think that in Paradise Lost, Milton makes Satan a hero while God a tyrant, yet, adopting the original Biblical perception, the reader will see the "Eternal Providence" of God and will agree that Milton has succeeded in justifying God as a Father Who says "Man Shall Find Grace". A Biblical reading of this epic will be done by focusing on its detail contents.  相似文献

A Good Man Is Hard to Find is a famous fiction which attracts many scholars to analyze the characters of the protagonists. According to Booth’s rhetorical theory, it tries to analyze how the rhetorical skills influence the readers’interpretation to the work by analyzing the application of narrative visual conversion, irony and foreshadowing. It will help readers understand the full fiction better.  相似文献

The little foxes, Lillian Hellman’s most popular piece of drama, is a cynical play which concerns with family greed and revenge. Analyzed from various critical perspectives, The Little Foxes is most prominently studied on her political viewpoint. Here this paper is intended to study it from the aspect of women’s position in the drama, or more concretely, in that society by the analyzing of the two main women characters: Birdie and Regina, to reveal that whichever kind of life a woman living in the early twentieth chose to live, she would never be "successful".  相似文献

As leading figures in English literature during the Neoclassical period,Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift both showed great concern with the nature of man and his place in the Great Chain of Being. They both emphasized the irreplaceable role of reason in guiding man in his self-positioning in the universe, and pointed out the tragic, pathetic,or detestable fall man was vulnerable to in case of violating the law of nature.Pope attached more importance to setting right man’ s position as against God and beast, while Swift showed more interest in the chain of being within the human society;Pope kept warning man against his pride and possible ruin as a result of his ambition, while Swift worried more about man’ s degradation due to loss of reason.  相似文献

The singularities and oscillatory performance of translating-pulsating source Green's function in Bessho form were analyzed. Relative numerical integration methods such as Gaussian quadrature rule, variable substitution method (VSM), and steepest descent integration method (SDIM) were used to evaluate this type of Green's function. For SDIM, the complex domain was restricted only on the 0-plane. Meanwhile, the integral along the real axis was computed by use of the VSM to avoid the complication of a numerical search of the steepest descent line. Furthermore, the steepest descent line was represented by the B-spline function. Based on this representation, a new self-compatible integration method corresponding to parametric t was established. The numerical method was validated through comparison with other existing results, and was shown to be efficient and reliable in the calculation of the velocity potentials for the 3D seakeeping and hydrodynamic performance of floating struc- tures moving in waves.  相似文献
