Like death and taxes, the quality of students' writing frequently provokes complaint, less frequently efforts to redress the grievance. In English Departments in particular, the view that staff have better things to do than teach writing is widespread (especially in Australian universities), understandable (if it means remedying an inadequacy that should have been addressed elsewhere), and perhaps justified (at least to the extent that most English Departments are already hard‐pressed teaching literature courses). It is also a view that is increasingly under attack: if our aim is to promote literacy, the ability to write well is as important as the ability to read well.

This paper looks at one attempt to provide a writing programme that does more than offer remedial assistance; it examines the reasons for doing more, the problems in doing it, and the benefits gained from a second‐year credit course in expository writing.  相似文献

In this paper I consider one aspect of how student writing is supported in the university. I focus on the use of the 'writing frame', questioning its status as a vehicle for facilitating student voice, and in the process questioning how that notion is itself understood. I illustrate this by using examples from the story of the 1944 Hollywood film Gaslight and show that apparent means of facilitating voice can actually contribute to a state of voicelessness. The paper considers what recovery of voice entails and the role of the 'voice coach' both in the film, and in the classroom. Drawing on the work of Stanley Cavell, his readings of Gaslight and of the American writers Thoreau and Emerson, I explore the themes of crisis and transformation in relation to the self and society. Thoreau's notion of the father tongue and his metaphor of the axe are considered in relation to the concept of voice and are shown to be suggestive of a mature relationship to language and of an Emersonian self-reliance that is denied by the mere technical skill and mastery learning of some current approaches to academic writing.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of the study Is to determine if counselors perceive secondary school students differently from teachers. A group of 25 effective teachers, as determined by their respective principals, and a group of 25 counselors-intraining were interviewed by the author. Each subject completed an 84-item Q-sort constructed of items describing an ideal student. Each item on the Q-sort was judged by a three-judge panel to describe a student as being more flexible or more rigid.

The two groups were matched according to degrees earned, sex, and age. The teacher group averaged six more years' experience than the counselor group.

Each subject's Q-sort was scored to produce a flexible score or a rigid score according to how the subject perceived the ideal student. A significant difference at the 0.1 level of confidence was found when Chi Square was used to analyze the data.

This study suggests that perceptual differences occur between two groups of persons in similar helping relationships which may be directly related to the personalities of the helpers. These perceptual differences are necessary for being effective In either helping relationship.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to explore ways in which students' experiences during the writing process can contribute to their academic integration. Students ( n = 46) were surveyed on their experiences before, during and after completion of their first major writing assignment. They were also interviewed in focus groups. Data indicate that students perceived several factors that may potentially inhibit their academic integration—some within the broader university context and others pertaining to completion of the written assignment. Findings suggest that interactions with staff and peers during the assignment writing process can provide significant opportunities for integration, provided these interactions are supportive. The study has implications for those who plan, support and deliver first year university courses, particularly those courses involving academic writing assignments.  相似文献
