Preparing to Teach in Cyberspace:

Teaching librarians to teach is an ongoing concern for instruction librarians. The literature confirms that many library and information science programs provide no formal coursework to prepare their students for a career in user education. This lack of formal preparation is compounded by additional demands for a grounding in educational technology and pedagogy. On-the-job-training has become the rule rather than the exception for most instruction librarians. This paper addresses practical concerns encountered at the University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries in providing resources and empowering education for librarians and staff members who teach, as well as the philosophical adoption of Computer-Based Education (CBE) principles and a modification of Raganathan's five laws of library science to create a flexible teaching and learning environment for real and vitrual libraries.     

21st Century Readers' Aids: Past History and Future Directions

ABSTRACT

This article provides a brief history of the development of library subject guides (often referred to as pathfinders) from the late 1800s to the present. During this period, subject guides have changed both their focus and format. The needs of academic institutions at the turn of the 20th century were very different than they are today, and technology that was non-existent then has become ubiquitous. Much can be learned from studying the evolution of these important library tools and looking to the future as they mature even further.     

Learning to Teach in a New Medium

Abstract

The development of a new method of providing instruction involves many different issues. This paper examines a pilot project in which videoconferencing was used to provide library instruction to students at remote campuses. The librarians initiating this new service confronted the issues of training, adaptation of instruction techniques to the new format, and collaboration with faculty and administrative staff. They also dealt with administrative issues such as scheduling classes and facilities and staff scheduling. This paper examines how this cross-departmental project developed and was supported, how the initial training was conducted, and how existing class outlines were adapted. Also discussed are the lessons learned from the initial sessions. Varied administrative and collaborative challenges face the library, faculty, and departmental administrators as this project moves from pilot project status into a regular and required part of the curriculum.     

Faculty-Librarian Collaboration to Teach Research Skills: Electronic Symbiosis

SUMMARY

This article discusses faculty-librarian collaboration to integrate technology in a course that focuses on teaching empirical research methodologies and library research skills to elementary and early childhood education graduate students. Vygotsky's theory, standards in teacher education, and information literacy standards form the conceptual framework that supports this collaboration. The purpose and procedures of this collaboration, as well as student, faculty, and librarian outcomes, are discussed. This present collaboration on bibliographic instruction and the use of Blackboard courseware is framed within the context of past history of collaboration and future plans to expand this collaboration.

《书目答问》出版百年之后 ,刘德刚先生对原书有错者订之 ,漏落者补之 ,名为《书目答问订补》。对全书所举要目逐部对原本 ,校正异同 ,于书目后增加按语 ,说明书之要旨及得失 ,力求真确 ,不蹈虚妄 ,实事求是。是先生毕生精力之作。     

近十年来我国民族古籍开发利用研究进展

2001-2010年,我国民族古籍开发和利用的研究工作取得了一系列的进展,文章在总结民族古籍形成和发展的基础上,主要从民族古籍的缩微和影印、民族古籍的数字化建设、民族古籍专业人才队伍的培养、民族古籍开发和利用的相关立法、民族古籍开发利用的管理体制和新时期民族古籍开发利用的理念等六个方面综述了近十年来我国民族古籍开发和利用的研究历程和最新成果.

我国图书馆在现有条件下开展口述历史工作的局限

口述历史工作的开展需要多方面要素的支持,这些要素可归纳为两大类,即理论与现实条件。口述历史工作得以顺利开展需要系统理论的指导,需要雄厚的资金作为后盾,需要具备一定专业修养、心理素养和社会影响力的采访人承担采访任务等。对于我国大多数图书馆而言,这些重要要素基本上都不具备,因此我国图书馆在相当长的时间内不适宜开展口述历史工作。
