Using Multimedia-Assisted Mode in the Course of English Teaching and Learning

With the development of the society & the economy,the pace of reformation & opening-up,and the modernization in China,English language,as a discipline,is being paid more and more attention to in the school.Good and high-standard English proficiency is required at present.With the influence of the traditional English teaching and learning mode,many students feel frustrated in the process of learning English.Therefore,the traditional English teaching and learning mode is greatly challenged.Based on the continuous development of the modern technology,the multimedia teaching and learning mode is widely applied.Multimedia,applied in the English teaching and learning process,create more authentic language environments,which enable the learners to communicate in English in real-life situations.Because both the authentic environment and communicative purposes are encouraged in modern EFL(English as a Foreign Language) teaching and learning classes,the combination of multimedia and basic teaching and learning skills will be a necessity.It is proved that the combination of the two is an effective way in the modern English language classes.     

Specifications of OCLC CJK Bibliographic Records And the Adoption of CJK Records from Asia

OCLC Online Computer Library Center, the largest library automation network in the world, links nearly 20,000 libraries in the Uaited States and 60 other countries and territories. Introducing a library automatian network of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean(CJK) characters in 1986, OCLC operates the largest CJK library network in the world in terms of the member of online CAK institutional asers. As of January 1, 1995, OCLC had 40 CJK users in the United States, Aastralia, Hong Kang and Taiwan. As of October 1, 1994, there were nearly 850, 000 unique CJK bibliographic records in the OCLC database. OCLC is interested in sharing the CJK bibliographic records, especially in loading CJK records created in Asia into the OCLC database. To this end, OCLC has entered into an agreement with the National Central Library, Taiwan; the National Library of China, and Waseda University, Japan, and is in negotiation to load the Japan-MARC records. Sharing of CJK bibliographic records between libraries in Asia and those in the United States is a complex task as the CJK records created in Asia and those created in the United States are not compatible. This paper explains the specifieatioas of the OCLC CJK records, and lists eight areas where the incompatibility exists. The following five areas of incompatibility are due to different cataloging practices: 1. AACR2; 2. name and subject authorities;3.romantzation; 4.subject headings; and 5.ctassification schemes. Three additional areas of incompatibility are technical in nature; 6.MARC format; 7.character set; and 8.internal code.     

Mercury pollution in the Chongqing part of the Three Gorges Reservoir area and its remediation and prevention

Mercury pollution in the Three Gorges Reservoir area of P. R. China merits special attention. We investigated into the current situation in the Chongqing part of the Reservoir area, identified the pollution sources and proposed some suggestions for the remediation and prevention of mercury pollution in this area. Atmospheric mercury in Chongqing was mainly from coal burning and releases of mercury-containing products such as various types of lights and fever thermometers. Urban drainage in Chongqing and Changshou, and runoffs from the high mercury background area in the lower reaches of the Wujiang River contributed most of the mercury in the water of the Yangtze River. A majority of the blame should be laid on mercury and gold mining in the Wujiang valley. We suggested foresting sloping lands to relieve soil erosion and prevent mercury-bearing soil from running into rivers, educational activities to discourage use of mercury-containing products and improved infrastructure to collect mercury-containing wastes for reducing mercury releases, more facilities for treating wastewater and solid waste to accommodate increased requirements of discharge, and growing selected perennial plants in mercury-contaminated land to absorb the mercury in soil. We also suggested concerted operation of a dedicated water-quality monitoring system, reinforced legislation and an effective administrative mechanism to ensure lasting efforts are invested in curbing mercury releases and restoring mercury contaminated land and water in the Reservoir area.

Though the themes in Howards End and Mrs.Dalloway are many and varied,the master theme is a connection of fragments and divergences,and the powerfully drawn female characters have long been the focus in the interpretation of the theme of the novels.In this paper,tentative conclusions are drawn that connection the heroines have seemingly fulfilled in the end is problematic for its vulnerability and superficiality through a careful study of narrative techniques in the molding of Mrs.Wilcox and Mrs.Dalloway;and that such problematic connection revealed in the human relationship is,to some extent,the expression of an ambiguous stance of Forster and Woolf towards the definiteness of connection in a modern binary world.     

On Negative Transfer in Pronunciation by English Majors in Higher Vo cational and Technical Colleges

In the reform of educational structure in China recently, vocational education is being focused and higher vocational education is developing rapidly. With the increase of student enrollment in Higher Vocational Technical College (HVTC), the quality of students is declining in the meantime and especially the students who major in English have a low proficiency in English language. This thesis explores the theory of phonetics and the theory of transfer in second language learning and deals with negative transfer of mother tongue in segmental and supra-segmental levels to HVTC students when they learn English pronunciation and intonation.     

Value Choice and System Enlightenment of the U.S.Business Judgment Rule

Through analyzing theories and legislative cases in respect of Business Judgment Rule in American justice systems with the com parison method,this article reveals that the business judgment system is conducive to the protection of rights and interests of the directors in decision making,and enables the court to avoid the substantive review on business management in an effective manner;at the same time,in view of the blanks and deficiencies in the legislation of China in the "Company Law" and other relevant laws,it is recommended that the Business Judgment Rule be introduced into China and the legislation in respect of director accountability be strengthened,while the direc tors fiduciary duty and other supporting systems be improved,with the reference of the U.S.practice,to clarify the legal boundary between rights and responsibilities of directors.     

A Review of Learner Autonomy in Language Learning

Learner autonomy,the ability of taking one’s own learning in charge,plays an important role in language learning.The paper reviews the definition and the level of learner autonomy,the characteristics of autonomous learners,the application of learner autonomy in the classroom and out of the classroom and the relationship between learner autonomy and culture.In the paper,the development and the study of learner autonomy in China are also summarized.     

Maximizing the usage of technology-enhanced teaching and learning of science and mathematics in English program in the Malaysian secondary schools system

This research is attempting to examine the effectiveness in the application of ICT （information and communication technology） and standardize courseware in ETeMS （English for Teaching Mathematics and Science） or PPSMI （Pengajaran and Pembelajaran Sains and Matematic dalam Bahasa Inggeris） in English program in the Malaysian secondary school system. Five dimensions of secondary school （type of school, demographic, leadership quality, teaching and learning culture, and teachers＇ personal and working experience） were examined to determine the maximizing usage of TEC （technology-enhanced classroom） in the learning program. In general, there is a significant difference among factors stated above with maximizing usage of TEC in teaching and learning of science and mathematics in English program. The learning culture is also closely related. In addition, the school and teaching staff are another two essential factors found to be the strong fundamental of maximizing the usage of technology in TEC teaching and learning with towering quality. This study represents an addition to the extant literature on maximizing the usage of technology-enhanced teaching and learning towards the excellence of education in the secondary school system. The maximizing usage of TEC teaching and learning environment within the secondary school system is pivotal towards achieving high quality human capital and improving the efficiency and integrity of technology-enhanced learning of science and mathematics in English program. This study provides further groundwork to assist existing education managers to improve work quality and deliver the maximizing usage of TEC teaching and learning towards the excellence in secondary education.

Empirical Studies on the Community＇s Education for the Aged ——Investigations to the 12 Cities

The text discusses the problem of form of organization and security system of old-age education in community from theoretical and practical aspects. From the practical analysis, we find that the main form of old-age education in community is school education. The statistics of the research shows that the level of old-age education in community is in primary stage. The teaching form, the teaching content, the mechanism of organization, and fundamental facilities need to be strengthened. The analysis in different areas shows that the teaching activities and fundamental facilities of old-age school in eastern cities are obviously better than that of cities in middle region. In theoretical analysis, it expounds the relationship between old-age education and the education in communities, old-age education and life long education. And it also raises the problem of the confusion of definition in the studying course of the old-age education＇s theories such as attribution, characteristic, and definition. Its content has been renewed. The theoretical framework has been raised in the research of security system.

Observation: The Impact of Teachers’Behavior in Teacher-students Interactions on Pupils’Motivation

To find out in what ways the teacher’s behavior in interactions could motivate students effectively,a two-day observation concerning the relationship between the teacher’s behavior in teacher-students interactions and students’motivations in the classroom was carried out in a primary school in Scotland.The author illustrated the basic content of classrooms observed and the methods of collecting and analyzing the data.Then,it focused on the discussion of the data and related literacy.Finally,it drew the conclusion that the positive feedback,explanations for the reason of doing the task and enthusiastic actions could effectively motivate students to learn.
