William Wordsworth was the representative of the British "Lake poets" In his poems he aimed at simplicity and purity of the language, fighting against the conventional forms of the 18th century poetry. He transformed his observation of the landscape into the revelation of the beauty of nature in poetry, and thus expressed his nature philosophy. In this article the author briefly analyses the organization of his poem: "Ode: Intimation of Immortality" and mainly elaborates her understanding of the poet’s na-ture-philosophy in four points:(a) Man is sensitive to all natural influences in childhood.(b) Nature has a moral and spiritual sig-nificance and helps the poet understand the mystery of human life.(c) Life is but a stage.(d) All good poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings;it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.  相似文献

Thomas Nashe‘s Spring is a lyric poem extracted from his comedy “Will Summer‘s Testament”. It is a poem of iambic pentameter. The whole poem is made up of three stanzas. Simple and plain as its language is , it is the language of common speech of his own time, ingeniously chosen, refined, modified and heightened. The author‘s use of a combination of alliteration, mediate and end rhyme in its rhyme scheme makes the poem read as smoothly and briskly as singing a song. His arrangement of four rhythm or beating schemes in a single poem makes the poem confirm to no conventional pattern. His employment of many rhetorical devices makes the poem vivid, imaginative and peffecdve.  相似文献

This paper aims at analyzing Tintern Abbey in light of dualism in the aspects of“nature and self”and“sense and sensibility”. Nature is the background of self’s emotional expression, and self can be distinctly observed under this peaceful and picturesque environment. As for sense and sensibility,Wordsworth tries to make balance between them and finally combines emotional sensibility with artistic form. The author of this paper tries to show that whether nature and self or sense and sensibility, the two different entities from the two aspects displayed in the poem interlace mutually and gradually come into a unified state in the end.  相似文献

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty"-the famous line in English romantic poet John Keats’Ode on a Grecian Urn-has triggered wide discussion and numerous interpretations. From the point of"negative capability", a phrase first coined by Keats himself, this paper is attempting to display the consistency between that poetic line and the poet’s creation and life attitude on the whole. For this purpose, this paper will mainly introduce and interpret five of Keats’famous odes in the order of their display of his"rising acceptance of life": Ode to a Nightingale, Ode on a Grecian Urn, Ode to Autumn, Ode on Melancholy and Ode on Indolence. This paper would like to show in the first three Keats’s positive quest in different aspects and on certain levels, the fourth the underlying tone of life’s polyphonous song, and the final the"negative capability"that constitutes his healthy attitude toward creation and life. Finally, this paper hopes to demonstrate that it is such capability that enables the poet to growingly accept life, and it is also essential to him as a philosophical poet.  相似文献

Lord of the Flies is generally considered to be the masterpiece of William Golding, one of the most famous writers in the 20thcentury.There are four major characters in Lord of the Flies,Ralph,Jack,Piggy and Simon.Piggy is a character that Golding elaborately designs. However, scholars and critics pay less attention to him.As a matter of fact,Piggy plays an indispensable role in this novel. This thesis analyzes Piggy in Lord of the Flies, which aims at exploring the real reason of his being looked down upon and laughed at as well as his tragedy and deepening readers’understanding of Piggy in this novel.Through the analysis of Piggy, the author of this thesis finds that Piggy is incarnation of science and reason and prey of evil and barbarism.Piggy is a"great martyr",who dies for his scientific and rational beliefs.  相似文献

<正>"Ode to the West Wind" written by Percy Bysshe Shelley is an excellent romantic poem in the 19th century and the best lyric of the poet. In the poem Shelley expresses his great love for nature, praises the West Wind for its spirit of destroying old things and being pregnant with new things. By evoking the great force of the West Wind, he expresses his determination to fight against dying things and disseminate new ideas with his Poetry. This point is well shown, especially in the first and the last two stanzas.  相似文献

As leading figures in English literature during the Neoclassical period,Alexander Pope and Jonathan Swift both showed great concern with the nature of man and his place in the Great Chain of Being. They both emphasized the irreplaceable role of reason in guiding man in his self-positioning in the universe, and pointed out the tragic, pathetic,or detestable fall man was vulnerable to in case of violating the law of nature.Pope attached more importance to setting right man’ s position as against God and beast, while Swift showed more interest in the chain of being within the human society;Pope kept warning man against his pride and possible ruin as a result of his ambition, while Swift worried more about man’ s degradation due to loss of reason.  相似文献

William Wordsworth was England’s Poet Laureate. He is the Romantic poet who is most often described as a"nature"write, and he is always sensitive to every subtle change in the world around him. In my opinion, his love for nature is boundless. To him, nature acts as a substitute for imaginative and intellectual engagement with the development of embodied human beings in their diverse circumstances. It’s nature that gives him knowledge and strength. In this paper, I want to narrow Wordsworth’s conception of nature, and then we can find the harmony in the community of men and nature.  相似文献
