英语的明喻(simile)是一种将具有某种共同特征的两种不同事物加以比较,用一种事物比方所要说的事物的修辞方式。被比的人或物(即喻体vehicle)和用作比较的人或物(本体tenor)间常用as,like,as if(as though)来作比喻词,有时也可用形容词比较级、介词短语等形式来表示两事物间的相似关系。英语明喻利用比与被比事物间的相似点,用鲜明、生动的形象化未知为已知,化抽象为具体、化深奥为浅显、化平淡为生动,因此,为了充分传达原文形象,翻译时常常采用直译法。例如:1.He arose joint by joint,asa carpentar's rule opeas,and beatthe dust from his clothes.(O.Henry,“The Cop and the Aathem”)象打开一把曲尺似的,他一节一节地撑了起来,掸去衣服上的灰尘。
