Progressive failure analysis of slope with strain-softening behaviour based on strength reduction method

Based on the strength reduction method and strain-softening model,a method for progressive failure analysis of strain-softening slopes was presented in this paper.The mutation is more pronounced in strain-softening analysis,and the mutation of displacement at slope crest was taken as critical failure criterion.An engineering example was provided to demonstrate the validity of the present method.This method was applied to a cut slope in an industry site.The results are as follows:(1) The factor of safety and the critical slip surface obtained by the present method are between those by peak and residual strength.The analysis with peak strength would lead to non-conservative results,but that with residual strength tends to be overly conservative.(2) The thickness of the shear zone considering strain-softening behaviour is narrower than that with non-softening analysis.(3) The failure of slope is the process of the initiation,propagation and connection of potential failure surface.The strength parameters are mobilized to a non-uniform degree while progressive failure occurs in the slope.(4) The factor of safety increases with the increase of residual shear strain threshold and elastic modulus.The failure mode of slope changes from shallow slip to deep slip.Poisson’s ratio and dilation angle have little effect on the results.     

Direction-Based Adaptive Switching Filter for Removing High-Density Impulse Noise

A direction-based adaptive switching(DBAS) filter is presented for the removal of high-density impulse noise in images. The extrema detection and 28-directional detection are employed to discriminate the pixels as noisy or noise-free. If a pixel is classified as noisy, it will be replaced by a median or a mean value within an adaptive filter window with respect to different noise densities. Simulation results show that the miss-detection ratio and false-alarm ratio are both very low even at noise level as high as 90%. At the same time, better results are obtained in terms of the qualitative and quantitative measures. The peak signal-to-noise ratios increase by nearly 1 dB compared with other existing algorithms. In addition, the computation time is around 10 s for test images with resolutions of 512×512since the proposed approach has low complexity.

Electricity generation and brewery wastewater treatment from sequential anode-cathode microbial fuel cell

A sequential anode-cathode double-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC), in which the effluent of anode chamber was used as a continuous feed for an aerated cathode chamber, was constructed in this experiment to investigate the performance of brewery wastewater treatment in conjugation with electricity generation. Carbon fiber was used as anode and plain carbon felt with biofilm as cathode. When hydraulic retention time (HRT) was 14.7 h, a relatively high chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 91.7%–95.7% was achieved under long-term stable operation. The MFC displayed an open circuit voltage of 0.434 V and a maximum power density of 830 mW/m3 at an external resistance of 300 ?. To estimate the electrochemical performance of the MFC, electrochemical measurements were carried out and showed that polarization resistance of anode was the major limiting factor in the MFC. Since a high COD removal efficiency was achieved, we conclude that the sequential anode-cathode MFC constructed with bio-cathode in this experiment could provide a new approach for brewery wastewater treatment.     

Catalytic ozonation-biological coupled processes for the treatment of industrial wastewater containing refractory chlorinated nitroaromatic compounds

A treatability study of industrial wastewater containing chlorinated nitroaromatic compounds (CNACs) by a catalytic ozonation process (COP) with a modified Mn/Co ceramic catalyst and an aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was investigated.A preliminary attempt to treat the diluted wastewater with a single SBR resulted in ineffective removal of the color,ammonia,total organic carbon (TOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD).Next,COP was applied as a pretreatment in order to obtain a bio-compatible wastewater for SBR treatment in a second step.The effectiveness of the COP pretreatment was assessed by evaluating wastewater biodegradability enhancement (the ratio of biology oxygen demand after 5 d (BOD5) to COD),as well as monitoring the evolution of TOC,carbon oxidation state (COS),average oxidation state (AOS),color,and major pollutant concentrations with reaction time.In the COP,the catalyst preserved its catalytic properties even after 70 reuse cycles,exhibiting good durability and stability.The performance of SBR to treat COP effluent was also examined.At an organic loading rate of 2.0 kg COD/(m3·d),with hydraulic retention time (HRT)=10 h and temperature (30±2) °C,the average removal efficiencies of NH3-N,COD,BOD5,TOC,and color in a coupled COP/SBR process were about 80%,95.8%,93.8%,97.6% and 99.3%,respectively,with average effluent concentrations of 10 mg/L,128 mg/L,27.5 mg/L,25.0 mg/L,and 20 multiples,respectively,which were all consistent with the national standards for secondary discharge of industrial wastewater into a public sewerage system (GB 8978-1996).The results indicated that the coupling of COP with a biological process was proved to be a technically and economically effective method for treating industrial wastewater containing recalcitrant CNACs.     

New design of sense amplifier for EEPROM memory

We present a new sense amplifier circuit for EEPROM memory. The topology of the sense amplifier uses a voltage sensing method, having low cost and low power consumption as well as high reliability. The sense amplifier was implemented in an EEPROM realized with an SMIC 0.35-μm 2P3M CMOS embedded EEPROM process. Under the condition that the power supply is 3.3 V, simulation results showed that the charge time is 35 ns in the proposed sense amplifier, and that the maximum average current consumption during the read period is 40 μA. The novel topology allows the circuit to function with power supplies as low as 1.4 V. The sense amplifier has been implemented in 2-kb EEPROM memory for RFID tag IC applications, and has a silicon area of only 240 μm^2.

Learning to Program in KPL Through Guided Collaboration

A quasi-experiment was conducted at an elementary school to investigate if guided collaboration would facilitate programming learning of 6 graders. Sixty-six students of two intact classes learned to program in KPL （kid＇s programming language） for 18 weeks during the experiment. One class was randomly assigned to the control group （i.e., free-collaboration） and the other to the experimental group （i.e., guided-collaboration）. Students in both groups formed heterogeneous teams of 3 persons. The guided-collaboration teams in experimental group were provided with a worksheet for every programming task. The worksheet contained a set of task-specific guiding questions to guide students through the problem-solving process in a systematic and disciplined manner. An analysis of test scores showed that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in the achievement tests, suggesting that the guiding questions were useful in enhancing students＇ comprehension of programming concepts and developing their programming skills. A comparison of the amount of time spent at each problem-solving step showed that the experimental group spent significantly more time than the control group at the analysis/design/coding step as well as the reflection step. Conversely, the control group spent considerably more time at the debugging step. With the help of the guiding questions, students in the experimental group were also more able to conduct meaningful discussions.

A fast two-stage geometric active contour algorithm for image segmentation is developed. First, the Eikonal equation problem is quickly solved using an improved fast sweeping method, and a criterion of local minimum of area gradient (LMAG) is presented to extract the optimal arrival time. Then, the final time function is passed as an initial state to an area and length minimizing flow model, which adjusts the interface more accurately and prevents it from leaking. For object with complete and salient edge, using the first stage only is able to obtain an ideal result, and this results in a time complexity of O(M), where M is the number of points in each coordinate direction. Both stages are needed for convoluted shapes, but the computation cost can be drastically reduced. Efficiency of the algorithm is verified in segmentation experiments of real images with different feature.
