Marriage is usually associated with happiness and harmony. But in Shakespear’s Measure for Measure, it seems it is infused with power of law. Is it a clear-cut punishment or reward? Its qualities revolve around the individual situations in which it occurs, which is interpreted and deployed by characters in the play in different ways.  相似文献

Language stood in the foreground of George Orwell’s social and political thinking. Language is not only a vehicle for transmitting ideas, but also a product originating from social and political interactions. This paper examines the language, particularly the abuse of language, in the context of politics presented in Nineteen Eighty-Four, so as to find out George Orwell’s view of language: language as a manipulated tool to control people’s minds.  相似文献

By analyzing the details of Araby, this paper is to prove that in Araby James Joyce puts the boy’s personal yearning for idealized romance vis-à-vis several irresistible hindrances so as to reveal the doomed pointlessness of an individual’s holding his ideal and passion in a reality with prevailing spiritual paralysis.  相似文献

Beyond the stories,Golding spends much effort on an issue called"impotence of language"in his works, especially Lord of the Flies and Darkness Visible. Thus Golding’s language view is worthwhile to research. With help of Lacan’s theory of signifier and signified, this paper made a primary glance about Golding’s language view within the two novels.  相似文献

The paper deals with the reading and interpreting of the voice of gender in Emily Dickinson’s poems. The gender, the 1yric poem and the reading constitute the performance.Dickinson succeeded in constructing alternatives to a traditional, fixed binary gender system(woman/man) and opens opportunities for the reader to perform alternative gendering.Analysis of voices of gender in and of Dickinson’s poems shows that her variant performances of gender are crucial to the general construction of her poetry.Through the analysis of the voice of gender in Dickinson’s poetry, the paper discloses the crucial function of poets construct in women’s rebellion and self-salvation and subverting patriarchy, which also demonstrates her uniqueness in her life and literary creativity.  相似文献

Joseph Conrad’s Lord Jim ranks among the modern novels not for its story, but for its unconventional narrative strategies of the comparatively simple plot, especially its employment of multiple point of view as a deconstructing strategy, rendering the text incapable of unambiguous interpretation. The only possible way for the reader to understand it is by active participation, finding out the thread of logic in the chaotic psyche of the multiple narrators.  相似文献

Longinus’s On the Sublime holds a uniquely unparalleled position in Western critical theories. By analyzing Li Bai’s well-known poem Cataract on Mount Lu from the perspective of sublimity, attempt is made to appreciate the ancient Chinese poems by using Western critical theory and thus derive another kind of aesthetic beauty.  相似文献

"Theory of Epiphany" James Joyce used in his literature is to explain an aesthetic process of the stages of artistic creation. Virginia Woolf’s conception of "moments of being", later develop into the stream of consciousness, is considered as the major techniques in her short stories. In this paper, the major features of the two techniques are compared and contrasted with reference to Joyce’s early fictions and Woolf’s The Mark on the Wall.  相似文献

The Red Badge of Courage is the masterpiece of Stephen Crane. As a naturalist novel, its success is based on strong visual stimulation and the continuous auditory shock, a three-dimensional war movie which is crackling with sounds and colors was rendered so incisively and vividly. This paper aims to probe the naturalism in The Red Badge of Courage from two angles:visual aspects and auditory aspects.  相似文献

The publication of the famous novel The Sound and The Fury projects the long-enduring reputation of William Faulkner as a household American writer in every nook and cranny of the world.Just in this novel,Faulkner employs the literary device of stream of consciousness and makes a good play with time and order to his own joy, which makes it an outstanding literary feature in the novel. In this essay, the unusual conceptions of time and order in the novel are tentatively probed mainly from the following three perspectives:1) the initiative for Faulkner creating the novel as a novel against time and order.2) the disordered arrangement as an artistic device——the optimum key to delivering the story.3) the potential order underlying the seeming disorder in the novel.  相似文献

School history textbook narratives of a nation’s past often present limited perspectives, which may impede the aim of teaching history from multiple perspectives. Less is known about the influence of including multiple perspectives on students’ representations of the past. This study examines the extent to which students include multiple perspectives when processing a schoolbook text that includes multiple perspectives compared to a schoolbook history text containing fewer perspectives. Tenth grade students (N = 104) in four schools were randomly assigned to read one of two texts on the Dutch Revolt and asked to make a summary. Multiperspectivity was analysed through the representation of actors, aspects of scale, dimensions and historiography. The students working with the text having high multiperspectivity showed more perspectives in their representations. In the summaries, these students included significantly more perspectives than did the students using the text with fewer perspectives. Moreover, these students’ representations of the main actors were more nuanced. The students using the text with high multiperspectivity situated the conflict in a broader international context and integrated more historiographical dimensions. The insights generated by these outcomes emphasize the important role of textbooks when aiming to teach history from multiple perspectives.

Providing learners with opportunities to engage in activities similar to those carried out by scientists was addressed in a web-based research simulation in genetics developed for high school biology students. The research simulation enables learners to apply their genetics knowledge while giving them an opportunity to participate in an authentic genetics study using bioinformatics tools. The main purpose of the study outlined here is to examine how learning using this research simulation influences students’ understanding of genetics, and how students’ approaches to learning using the simulation influence their learning outcomes. Using both quantitative and qualitative procedures, we were able to show that while learning using the simulation students expanded their understanding of the relationships between molecular mechanisms and phenotype, and refined their understanding of certain genetic concepts. Two types of learners, research-oriented and task-oriented, were identified on the basis of the differences in the ways they seized opportunities to recognize the research practices, which in turn influenced their learning outcomes. The research-oriented learners expanded their genetics knowledge more than the task-oriented learners. The learning approach taken by the research-oriented learners enabled them to recognize the epistemology that underlies authentic genetic research, while the task-oriented learners referred to the research simulation as a set of simple procedural tasks. Thus, task-oriented learners should be encouraged by their teachers to cope with the scientists’ steps, while learning genetics through the simulation in a class setting.  相似文献

Jane Austen, one of the most influential female novelists in the history of world literature,is the first female to break up the monopoly of male writing. Her famous work Pride and Prejudice was created in 1813,which gained her lasting fame and popularity. In this novel, the characters of the four ladies are impressive:Jane is mild;Charlotte is mediocre;Lydia is ignorant;Elizabeth is wise.Different characters result in different marriages which are moral marriage, utilitarian marriage,sex-oriented marriage and perfect marriage.Through the analysis of the characters and these four marriages, this thesis aims to conclude Jane Austen’s Perception of Marriage, that is,character determines marriage.  相似文献
