Politeness is a very important topic in modern linguistics. With the development of the study of linguistics, a lot of people lay the emphasis on the study of politeness language. It can be observed in all languages and cultures as a social phenomenon, which plays an important role in individuals’ linguistic behavior. But due to different culture, different politeness principles and other reasons, different peo ple have different understandings about the definition of politeness, and they deal with politeness in different ways. Through different study background, principle and theory, this paper focuses on the politeness language in English and Chinese culture caused the differences. Politeness languages are mainly expressed in the forms of address, greeting, congratulation, appreciation and apology . The biggest difference between English and Chinese is that the Chinese system is profusion and complicated, but the English one is quite simple. Age, income, marriage and religion, etc. are taboos in English and people in western countries like to talk about weather when they meet each other; greeting in Chinese almost includes different things about one’s life. Appreciation in Chinese is not used frequently. Peo ple do not often say "thank you" to their families or friends. Appreciation in English can be used among families, friends, and colleagues and so on. At the end of this thesis, a conclusion is drawn; limitations and some suggestions of the research are stated!  相似文献

Native language plays an important role in the field of foreign language teaching and learning. When it comes to the transfer of the native language, we always think about the negative interference of it, even if we know that language transfer can be divided into positive transfer and negative transfer. In fact, we should not neglect these common areas between Chinese and English, which lead to the positive transfer and strengthen the efficient process of language learning. Here, there have been listed four levels of common areas between Chinese and English to illustrate the positive transfer from Chinese to English.  相似文献

Gender difference is a popular research topic for many disciplines. It has also aroused the interest of an increasing number of linguists. This article attempts to explore one of the aspects of gender difference in language, that is, discourse styles of male and female in speech communication and adopts two approaches —the dominance approach and the difference approach, proposed by some researchers to explain different discourse styles of men and women and show its socio-cultural reasons in order to enhance people’s understanding of the relationship between language and gender.  相似文献

Cultural differences are permeating in any form of language, including some idioms related with animals.Cross-cultur al communication, which is the ultimate goal of the foreign language studying, has been more and more popular in the life of the people from different countries, yet people do so with a little or no awareness of cultural differences.Though people may feel comfortable with standard literary speech, they will probably find themselves in hot water when confronted with idiomatic ex pressions.Idiomatic expressions are a mirror of a distinct cultural connotation is of vital importance. The thesis confines the idiomatic expression only to the animals, for most of the animals are relatively familiar to human be ings and the idiomatic expressions are rich in both Chinese and English. These idiomatic expressions reflect cultural differences more than cultural similarities for each of them has its own origins and shows its own national coloring. The cultural differences can be mainly divided into three categories:cultural conflict, cultural adaptation, and cultural vacancy.Only by acquainting with and awareness of these cultural differences, can people use such idiomatic expressions appropriately and understand them correctly. As a matter of fact, culture and language are interdependent. The awareness of cultural backgrounds is essential for cross-cul tural communication.I hope that every learner will realize the great importance of cultural awareness, and every learner’s good intention will receive pleasing responses.  相似文献

How to define Standard Language is one of the most fundamental issues in language variation research. This article, unlike those focusing more on the linguistic features, explores and checks the criteria to define Standard English from a sociolinguistic view and in a uniquely bilingual environment. The results are only partly in line with many well-known assumptions about the standard language and some new criteria are put forward.  相似文献

Honglou Meng is an encyclopedia of Chinese language in which includes many different Chinese linguistic features, e.g. idioms, common sayings, poems etc. There are 109 Chinese common sayings in the first 80 chapters of the novel. Most Chinese common sayings contain figurative meanings and the images involved are usually vivid and culture-specific; therefore it is very difficult to translate them. It is found that David Hawkes is more creative and use more free translation while the Yangs use more literal translation. This supports Feng Qinghua’s suggestion that the Yangs prefer to use literal translation while David Hawkes is inclined to use free translation.  相似文献

This paper re-examines the comparison of the demonstratives in English and Chinese, which has been discussed by many linguists. They argue that the demonstratives in English and Chinese don’t correspond symmetrically, and that ’这’ in Chinese, for example,is more widely used than this in English.Earlier approaches to the comparison in terms of space, time and text distance are reviewed. This paper assumes that, compared with English demonstratives, the proximity indicated by Chinese demonstratives is more influenced by psychological factors. This paper holds that the space, time and text distance as well as psychological distance act upon each other,co-determining the choice of demonstratives in Chinese.  相似文献
