Marianne Moore was a modernist poet greatly influenced by Chinese art and the Taoist aesthetic. Her passion for Chinese culture never ceased to grow from her earliest contact with the Chinese paintings and artwork introduced to the western countries in the early 20th century. Her early poem entitled "The Fish" and a later one entitled "Tell me,Tell me" serve as two typical examples to show the marriage of Chinese elements to her American poetic ideas.  相似文献

The intention of this present paper is to explore the relationship between culture and perception and the cultural factors that affect people’s perceptions from different cultural backgrounds. This study is based on a case, which is a news report about the cultural conflict between an old Chinese father and her daughter who has been living in Canada for eight years. Detailed information has been acquired by the author using relative books, journals as well as her own understanding and interpretation. It is concluded that to be aware of the cultural factors is of great importance to understand why people from different cultures have quite different perceptions toward the same thing, which can help to reduce the conflicts and misunderstandings in intercultural communication.  相似文献

Beloved and A Mercy are widely regarded as a companion piece to each other. This thesis intends to employ Gerard Genette’s narrow-sense intertextuality to study Two Black male Characters in BelovedA Mercy:Paul Dthe Blacksmith. It is hoped that this thesis will reveal the deep concern of Morrison not only for the future of women of her own race, but also for the black men.And by the creation of Paul D and the blacksmith,Morrison wants to show us her definition of ideal relationships between man and woman:Male participation is indispensable in a female’s growth and redemption.Only in the process of jointly conquering the shadows and tribulations of the past, can they reach real mutual understanding and harmony.  相似文献

Margaret Laurence, the famous Canadian woman writer,is regarded as "a founding mother of Canadian literature".The loons is one of her famous novel. The story is about Piquette Tonnerre,a half-bred girl who grows up under harsh circumstances in a white society that suppresses half-breds.They seek to fit into the main currents of culture but is marginalized by the white dominated society, which has always been highlighted by the author in many of her major works. The most prominent feature of this novel is its symbolism, namely the parallel of the loons and Piquette. The article gives a tentative interpretation of the symbolism between the loons and the heroine piquette from three aspects:the environment, temperament and destiny.  相似文献

Thomas Hardy is an outstanding novelist in the nineteenth century. He has produced numerous works including novels and poetry. His tragic novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has a great impact on the world literature. The paper is focused on the exploration of Tess’s tragedy through her life experiences.Tess’s tragedy can be illustrated by three factors—her family aspects, love experiences and her social images, which also contribute collectively to poor Tess’s destiny. The social background of the period provides a basis for the novel, and the deformed social values and morality is the root of her tragedy, together with her personal temperament and the Christian religious influences.Christian mores of self-sacrifice,wide love and purity have a great effect on characters in the novel. In the fourth part, there is some enlightenment from Tess’s tragedy. It is believed that women play a crucial role in society.Tess is a woman with good qualities and her experiences give a warning to women today:the proper treatment of one’s behaviors and the social rules is critical.  相似文献

In most countries of the world, higher education is highly subsidized by the public sector. The subsidy is a result of the role of higher education sector on the economy and good governance of the nations. Enrolment into higher institutions of learning is quite low in Africa compare to other continents of the world due to the continent's low and declining spending on her higher institutions of learning. This shabby contribution by the continent could be likened to a result of some imminent challenges, which ranged from inadequate financial resource due to economic and social crisis to the challenges posed by the HIV/AIDS (Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) pandemic. The contributions of Nigeria to the development of higher education in Africa is quite worthy of note. This can be affirmed by the increase in the number of states and federal universities in the country over the years since independence. This can be further reaffirmed by the promulgation of Decree 9 of 1993, which made the provision for the establishment of private universities, which further increased the nation's total number of universities to 93 from 59 and further strengthened the nations contributions to higher education development in the continent. In spite of all efforts made by the FGN (Federal Government of Nigeria), the nation is yet to reach her potential in the development of her higher education sector as the percentage of potential students that gained admission into the nation's higher institutions of learning still stand below 15% of the total number of applicants. The study therefore recommended that budgetary allocations to higher institutions of learning be increased to meet the financial demands of the institutions. In addition, multi-campus should be encouraged in order to allow for more access to higher education.  相似文献

Tess of the D’Urbervilles(1891),the masterpiece of Thomas Hardy, tells the tragical life story of a beautiful country girl.Although the heroine,Tess, was intelligent, beautiful, industrious and kind-hearted,she was finally hanged as the only victim of the story. The root of her tragedy was caused by the bourgeoisie society.Firstly her tragedy comes from the society:the inequali ty of the law,the false of the religion and the hypocrisy of the bourgeoisie society.Secondly,Tess’s tragedy is produced by her own characters. In addition, the tragedy of Tess is inevitable. Thus,Tess’s tragedy was produced by both the society and her own character, which is closely related to the bourgeoisie society.  相似文献

On the perspective of psychoanalytic criticism, three human psyche models propounded by Freud,Jung and Lancan were employed to reveal the psychological trace of the tragic character, the grandmother in The Acorn-gatherer.Back to the country life in late Victorian England,a lonely elderly widow had to bring up her illegitimate grandson, but her grandson couldn’t bear her mistreatment, left home and died accidentally. The old grandmother bore the hardship strenuously but had to live her old and ailing days lonely which is like a candle guttering in the wind.Deluged with the social discrimination and bias led by the collective unconscious, her help doesn’t come from anyone in the utilitarian oriented grass roots.Nor does it come from the Lord’s real redemption owing to a country woman’s limited knowledge and inwardness.Under the great strain from the grey society, she was gradually distorted mentally. As a result, she was victimized by the grey tide of the society but she herself was a victimizing force to her grandson. The psychological exploration of the piteous victim can thoroughly interpret the author’s implication,i.e.condemning the evils of the society and man’s wicked nature.  相似文献

With rapid development of China,a growing number of foreign products are entering the Chinese market. An excellent translation of a product’s advertisement from English to Chinese undoubtedly contributes to its successful promotion in the Chinese market.Although the translation practice contains multiple difficulties, the translation of lexical stylistic devices is a big challenge for translators. It is not simply because lexical stylistic devices are diverse and various in form, but also because most devices involve linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese. This thesis analyzed a number of current English to Chinese translations of the devices in commercial advertisements, which mainly come from two translation scholars’works and official websites of world-known brands.By analyzing the selected data, seven translation strategies are found to be the major translation strategies in this respect, namely literal translation, free translation, flexible translation, extended translation, adaptation translation, compensation translation and amplification translation strategies. Moreover,a number of linguistic and cultural issues which need to be considered by translators are also illustrated here.  相似文献

Chinese animation has long been criticized about its lack of creativity, its nakedness of dull educational intension, and its aloofness from ordinary audience. It is usually not able to be popular in China, let alone be accepted and welcomed by the world. These years comes Pleasant Goat and Big Big Wolf which changes the situation and leads the globalization of Chinese animation.Analyzed from the animation itself, its success is owing to the great embodiment of Chinese characteristics and the good fulfillment of common human appeals, including amusement, relaxation, identification and education which should be learned and perfected by more works to continue the mission of the globalization of Chinese animation.  相似文献
