池莉近作《生活秀》中的主人公来双扬是作者母性意识的着意强调，主人公自身并无任何实际的母亲角色，却以超凡的勇力哺育了弟妹，应对各种复杂的社会关系和男性角色。来双扬的形象隐含着中国女性的原始意象，即母性崇拜的因素。这种母性意识集中体现在她的生存意识上，以此展示出市民文化与政治文化、精英文化的冲突，并肯定了前者对后者的哺养特性。
