In this study we explored how the science department shaped the relationship between a science department head, Mr Greg, and a teacher, Ms Horton, as they grappled with their expectations of, and responsibilities for, teaching and leadership in the daily life in the department. We found that, from their life histories and their positions in the department, Mr Greg and Ms Horton have developed different values and visions that shape the ways they construct their work, particularly in relation to the place of subject matter, goals for students, teamwork, roles and responsibilities and accountability. Although both shared a commitment to their students and to their subject, Mr Greg saw his contribution in subject organizational terms and Ms Horton saw hers in personal student terms. Orderliness and stability were important to the department head whereas Ms Horton valued spontaneity and innovation. Collaboration was Mr Greg's method of achieving the business of the department; working alone allowed Ms Horton the freedom and flexibility she needed. Accountability for Mr Greg was framed in organizational terms; Ms Horton was more concerned with the learning that took place in her classroom. Our case study looks at the range and intensity of the forces shaping the work of teachers and the way they organize themselves at work. We argue that, if we wish to continue to improve teaching and learning, particularly in secondary schools, we need to know a great deal more about the forces that operate in subject departments.  相似文献

黄杲炘先生针对英语格律诗翻译标准的混乱现象,首倡“三兼顾”译诗法,即:兼顾顿数、字数与韵式。黄先生同时还提出了一套具体可行的量化标准,这些标准不仅发展了“以顿代步”译诗法,而且还为诗歌翻译提供了一种完整而科学的评价标准。文章试以方平先生所译《哈姆雷特》“戏中戏”里的一段诗文为例,验证“三兼顾”译诗法的客观性及其可操作性,并根据“三兼顾”原则将该段诗文试译成汉语。  相似文献

黄庆萱先生尝指出:语文中有为求平仄或押韵而非出于语文上自然倒装的情形。蔡宗阳先生进一步提出:为诗文格律而倒装,是修辞学上的倒装,出于作者为调和音律,突显重点,加强语势的修辞技巧,而与声韵有关。李丽文女士《诗经修辞研究》详列《诗经》为诗文格律而倒装347例,并举例详作说明。窃以为其所认定,稍嫌宽松。因此,以李书所列及蔡宗阳先生所举《大雅·桑柔》为基础,试为检讨格律倒装的认定标准。透过全面检讨《诗经》中所有“中O”结构词汇的意旨及其押韵地位,并考察先秦典籍的“中O”词汇结构与应用,得知学者所揭橥的格律倒装,确实存在。然而进行格律倒装辨识时,如果未能深究其语言习惯、词汇结构及意旨,纯依语句型态径行判定,容有可以商榷的余地。  相似文献

Inquiry into Children's Mathematical Thinking as a Means to Teacher Change   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
In the context of U.S. and world wide educational reforms that require teachers to understand and respond to student thinking about mathematics in new ways, ongoing learning from practice is a necessity. In this paper we report on this process for one teacher in one especially productive year of learning. This case study documents how Ms. Statz's engagement with children's thinking changed dramatically in a period of only a few months; observations and interviews several years later confirm she sustained this change. Our analysis focuses on the mathematical discussions she had with her students, and suggests this talk with children about their thinking in instruction served both as an index of change, and, in combination with other factors, as a mechanism for change. We identified four phases in Ms. Statz's growth toward practical inquiry, distinguished by her use of interactive talk with children. Motivating the evolution of phases were two sorts of mechanisms: scaffolded examination of her students' thinking; and asking and answering questions about individual students' thinking. Processes for generating and testing knowledge about children's thinking ultimately became integrated into Ms. Statz's instructional practices as she created opportunities for herself, and then students, to hear and respond to children's thinking.  相似文献

As recently as 1994, the dinosaur of the plant kingdom, Wollemi pine (Wollemi nobilis) has been discovered in its site of origin, the Wollemi National Park, 150 km from the city of Sydney, Australia. This giant grows to a height of 40m with a trunk diameter of over 1m. All possible steps have been taken to conserve this giant in its own World Heritage Area. It is also being exploited to grow commercially to be released to the public by the year 2005. With increasing human interference on the environment, the rate of extinction of species is exceeding the rate of origin of new species. The tragedy is that many species including the giants of the living world might disappear even as efforts are on to discover yet-to-be identified species. The alphasyllabary of Kannada comprises more than 400 symbols called akshara; each symbol is visuo-spatially complex with a consistent representation at the dual levels of the syllable and the phoneme. We investigated reading difficulties in Kannada among 8–12 year old children by conducting a between-groups followed by a case series analysis. We compared the children with reading difficulties with same age competent readers and younger readers who were similar in language level, matched on measures of vocabulary, syntactic processing, and morphological processing. Reading difficulties were characterized by poor akshara knowledge. Concomitant impairments were in syllable and phoneme level phonological skills, in rapid naming and in oral language skills. The case series analysis highlighted the variability of profiles among poor readers with the most common impairments being in akshara knowledge and phonological processing. Sub-groups of poor readers showed additional deficits in oral language, rapid naming, and visual processing skills. Together our findings indicate that the core deficit associated with reading difficulty in the alphasyllabary of Kannada is in the phonological domain. However, accompanying deficits in related skills, including visual processing, can further inhibit reading attainment. The findings from this study support a multifactorial model of reading development.  相似文献
