Astring quartet plays in the background as I listen to a famous New Age guru perform a wedding ceremony on a Malibu cliff. The guru is marrying two friends of mine who met in an acting class last year. She turns to the groom and launches into a spiel about how from now on, he's going to make the bride's "heart his home." That's when I start to lose it, I feel the Malibu sun warming my shoulders and melting all my cynicism into a pool of mush. I grip my girlfriend's hand for support but she's doing worse than I am, wiping her teary eyes on a scarf.  相似文献

STUDENT teachers have used a website to expose the trivial and sub-standard training they are receiving at their col leges. The whistleblowers complain that they are being lectured on "pop psychology"and have become experts in "cutting out and glueing" instead of being taught how to give lessons or control pupils. One claims:"If I hear anything more about 'global education' I am going to scream." Another comments: "I know all about how to incorporate Chinese students, every theory on the causes of bullying that there is and even how to teach Spanish. I'm not saying some of this stuff isn't going to be usful but I'll be with a year one class [five-year-olds] initially. I haven't learnt a thing about teaching children to read or add up, nothing about the national curriculum."  相似文献

A couple of years ago, when I was going tocollege, I volunteered to be a finish-line "hugger" atthe Kentucky Special Olympics held in Richmond1.Because I was studying to become a special-educationteacher, I was very interested in the games and thepeople and wanted to be more involved. The day of the event dawned dreary, wet andgray. I arrived early and watched as the participantsarrived with their families, friends and school groups.Even though it started to rain and a cold wind blew,I didn…  相似文献

I Introduction Eavan Boland in her"Outside History"states that:The nation(Ireland)is an old women and need to be liberated. But she is passive, and if she stops being passive and old,she becomes young and ornamental. So if you take a woman in a town which no doubt is strongly influenced by its Catholic past, where women were counseled patience and silent virtues,a woman who suddenly says,’Now I’m going to express myself,’that the society is not going to give her the same  相似文献

Michael ?-" I feel that every time I get the ball at the moment I am going to score. "Michael Owen is 21. That fact needed checking yesterday and it quietly surprised in the way a familiar picture on the wall at home can suddenly take on a different look when moved or seen from a fresh angle. Owen is only 21, yet he is as established (确定的)a figure(象征) in the national psyche(精神,灵魂) as the woman  相似文献

It’s funny how friendships begin. One day on a basketball court in Philly I was chasing after a loose (losing)ball, and the opponent going after it with me swung an elbow that caught my lip. I wiped away the blood with the shirt-tail of my jersey, but I wanted payback. With 15 seconds remaining in the game and the score tied  相似文献

Peristeri means a clove in Greek. It's also the name of the area I was staying while I was visiting my grandmother's family in Athens, Greece. Surrounded by a myriad of unfamiliar faces, jetlagged and exhausted, I tried to make sense of all the buzzing conversations going on around me. Sitting on the veranda of my grandmother's sister's home in Peristeri, I studied the faces of my relatives; I barely knew any of them at the time, and the newness of my surroundings captivated me, regardless of my knee-trembling sleepiness.……  相似文献

I’ve been saving money for a new guitar. It took me over a year, but now I have enough to buy the one I want.Nothside Music has a Pindari Super Twanger on sale this week and I'm going to buy one tomorrow.I can hardly wait! I think the guitar is really going to help the sound of our band.We call the band Skinny Dog because of the skinny dog that lives near our practice hall. Our band sounds very good now.Mr Walton, the music teacher, heard us practicing today at school, and he came in to listen for a while. He seemed to enjoy it.When we finished,he said we should try to have a gig at a party or something.  相似文献

(A) I have had thousands of classes since I started school nine years ago. But only one class was the most important. It happened last term just after I had got a bad result in an exam. I was sad and had lost my confidence ( 信心). I decided to go to a class which can tell me how to be successful. The speaker walked into the room. But she did not start talking like a teacher. In- stead, she held up a 20 yuan note! “Who wants this?”she asked. Unsurprisingly, everyone in the class held up …  相似文献
